Re: Backyard Gathering - 2016 - Chordie Friends - August 6th!

I'm not saying one way or another.  I did Skype in to one or two of the MeKidsBackyard Sessions.  I think Amy put the computer into a chair and had me in the rotation for an hour or so, while I barbequed and had a campfire (much smaller) in my own backyard.  Pretty soon we're going to wind up with multiple camera angles on satellite live feed using Channel 2 News surplus equipment.

Yeah Amy, I plan to be there.  I'm about 90% sure that I'll be accompanied by Jen and our dogs.  It'll be another chance to use our new camper.  I just received a 2016 brochure from Oneida Pines campground yesterday and plan to stay there again.  If something comes up and Jen can't tag along I'll just come by myself and tent camp.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and enjoying your family's hospitality and meeting JJJ and his crew.  I'll miss seeing Roger again and hearing his repertoire of ballads.

Nope. I've had to bail out of the last two at the last minute, much to my dismay. sad

I met up with Zurf and Topdown in Md. last June. There was someone else there but he got sick or something and I didn't ever see him. Then went to NY in Aug. and met Jim, Amy, DE and Roger

I am off the whole week of August 7th. Due to my fairly brutal work schedule. 12-14 hours daily,  I need to get a full day of rest before returning mondays. Even if I could go 1 1/2 days on the weekend of the 7th, I would be fine with that.

I can sympathize  with ya JJJ as most folks don't like working long hours.  My last 15 working years before I retired was working a rotating 12.5 hour shift (0630 to 1900 or 1830 to 0700) with a 45 minute drive each way, which made for a 14 hour day (or night). We worked 4 nights, got 4 days off, worked 3 days and 3 nights (back to back) three days off, worked 4 days and then 7 days off. (basically worked 14 days and were off 14 days during every 28 day period) Most of the people I worked with didn't like it and wanted to work a a normal 40 hour day shift work week. Although I sympathized with them because most employees could never adjust to the schedule I thrived on it.  For some reason, only 4-5 hours sleep a day never bothered me.  When new management took over and decided that an engineer was no longer needed on each shift I retired the first day I was scheduled for "banker's hours"  8 hour per day / 40 hour per week.

A Days Inn type. Hopefully close. $100 per night range. 2 beds. Worse comes to worse, my daughter can drive my car. She is too young to drink. We would make reservations ahead of time. Doesen`t have to be fancy. As long as there aren`t a lot of spiders. I hate spiders.

Whooo Hooooo!  big_smile  This is FANTASTIC NEWS to get first thing when logging in this morning!  I do hope that Jen and the pups can make it.  You'll have to let me know what types of things Jen is into seeing or doing.  Off the top of my head, I think if I were in her shoes I'd want to take a short shopping excursion. If you decide to come in or head out a more Westernly route, she may enjoy checking out the Waterloo Outlet Mall.

Are you talking about Big Jim from Ashville, Ohio (aka Bass Viking)?  Jim and I used to play at some of the same open mics and have fished/camped together.  I haven't talked to him for a while.  Hope he can make it.

YES, that's it!  Bass Viking!  He and I are friends on Facebook.  He's always talking about golf these days.  smile  I made an event there and invited him (along with many others) and got a "maybe".  Hopefully that's a firm maybe, but I'm not sure yet.  I haven't gotten a solid yes or no yet from my cousin and her husband either.  They're always good groupies to have around!  Dad's planning to be here of course.  I'd have to give him a what-for if he wasn't.

Brewery tours huh?  You going to head into Downtown Syracuse?  As I understand, there's a bunch of micro breweries there.  I'm not a beer gal, but I've heard good things about Empire and Eastwood breweries.  Syracuse is a college town after all, so gotta have good beer!  My brother recently went to Local 315 brewery and enjoyed it.  A friend of his highly suggested Prison City Brewery in Auburn (though that's a bit further south yet).

Look, a map spotting out a bunch of the breweries in Syracuse.... approximately where my house is, where you'll be, and where to find the BEER!

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7557/26790690445_7ea7d698c8.jpg

IF you're going on your own and want to check out some Popular places downtown (not breweries):
Coleman's Irish Pub is a Syracuse Landmark - there's an upside down streetlight, leprechaun phone booth and special leprechaun entrance:  http://colemansirishpub.com/ (but really, it's just an "authentic Irish Pub")
Another Syracuse Landmark is the (original) Dinosaur BBQ:  http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/bbq-syracuse - Alton Brown just did a show in Syracuse and made a point to visit the Dinosaur.

I've never been to either place to eat... only to party.

The Blue Tusk is the place to go if you want to just make ONE stop and taste it all.  69 different beers on tap (from what I looked up, this could be more or less since the article I read was written).  I worked in an office across the road years ago and used to take my morning coffee break here to get an English Muffin or Bagel.  I loved that they catered to the working crowd during the day, and thought the massive amount of taps was "pretty".  I never saw anyone getting beer before noon.  When lunch time came (as well as when the work day was over and we'd meet for drinks) we'd just take the elevator downstairs though to Mully's:  http://mullys.com/

Most other places I've been downtown are not open during the daytime ... or weekdays.  I haven't been to most of those places in quite a few years either.  I much prefer my little country bars to the clubs now.

Also, if you're going downtown, you may want to either take the ladies to Destiny USA or try to steer clear of it, though there is an indoor go-kart track that can be fun when the waits aren't too long.  wink  https://www.destinyusa.com/directory/

We were planning on the Genesee Brewery in Rochester and one in Utica that she picked out.

Re: Backyard Gathering - 2016 - Chordie Friends - August 6th!

OHHHHH!  I understand that the Genesee Brewery is HUGE.  There's a Bud plant nearby too but they don't give tours.  Just mostly Bud and Bud Light produced there. Nothing special anyway. Yup, than Saranac in Utica.

I also found this for you, should you decide to stop anywhere else along the way to Rochester:  http://fingerlakesbeertrail.com/content/
There's a ton of wineries in that direction as well.

We used to have a Nestle plant nearby, but they closed a few years ago. THAT's a tour I would have enjoyed.  wink

Re: Backyard Gathering - 2016 - Chordie Friends - August 6th!

We're about TWO months away!

So, I'm just bumping this thread up in the event others have had any changes in plans and maybe can make it!  I'm sad to her that our pal TIGLJK won't be able to make it again this year.  sad  I've been keeping my eyes open for a few members that thought they might make it last year, but I haven't seen them anywhere around Chordie lately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we have big fat YES's from these folks:
Ken (aka DE) and possibly the lovely Jen
UJB (bringing your lady friend with you by chance?)
JJJ, Trout and JJJ's lady friend
The entire mekids-family (myself, mekidsdad, mekidskids 2 and 3, mekidsgramps, and more... )
A handful of close friends!

There's a maybe-not-positive-just-yet from Zurf, as well as the "donkey-man" family big_smile (my cousin and her husband), and a few other close friends.
I heard from Big Jim (Bass Viking) on Facebook that he was a "maybe" but I haven't heard any more than that as of yet.  I plan to harass him, soon.

Soooo... I THINK that everyone that's coming for sure has directions and all that already.  BUT, I'll be sure to send out some emails as the time gets even closer to be sure.
ANYONE else a possible maybe?
