Topic: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

To complete the Weekly Feature calendar, this thread will showcase fingerstyle / classical guitarists, and the wealth of beautiful music they bring to the world.

Our inaugural performer is anonymous, who simply recorded someone else's arrangement of this well-known piece:

Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"    (by some guy)

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Nice choice for the start of the thread!  That guy doesn't have very many videos up, which is too bad.  Excellent playing!  I don't know how people manage to do that, though I could listen to it all day!  smile

TF

Phenomenal playing.
I cannot fathom how many hours of practice that was required for that performance..
I don’t even know how he remembers all of the movements and notes, never mind the flawless execution
I sure wish I could make my 12er sound like that!

Thanks for the magnificent beginning to flying fingers, it was awesome!

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

With my old beat up hands I'm just lucky to even be playing. Playing lead notes faster than a snail's pace (fretting hand) or using my fingers independently for finger picking is something I just can't do, now. 6 hand surgeries have left me with fingers that are stiff, swollen (most of the time) and just don't work for that type of playing. For now, I can manage to be a decent strummer as long as I stay with the open chords and a few barre chords thrown into the mix. I would love to be able to play fingerstyle but I know my limitations.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

A fantastic start to what I'm sure is going to be a very enjoyable feature.  As much as I like to try and play fingerstyle, I could not learn that in a lifetime. Thanks TF

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Fantastic! I've always enjoyed Queens music.  I think Tuesday's Flying Fingers is going to be fun.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Wow! What a great player! I enlarged my screen just to watch his (long) fingers fly over that fretboard! He captured every word, every nuance of Freddy's voice and Brian's playing. Haven't seen anything like it! Thanks, TF!

Whoever he is, he shows admirable humility in his introductory remarks to his video, crediting the arrangement and not his playing.

"Afraid to Dance"  (by Don Ross)

I think someone could dislocate a joint trying to dance to this ... enjoy:

Those are some FLYING fingers for sure!  Nice find!

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Thought I'd toss this one into the mix.... Calum Graham, another of those fine talented Fingerstyle players from up North.  This tune a little bit cross genre but really showcases this young man's versatility and talent !!

Callum's another excellent fingerstylist ... been listening to him a fair bit recently. Thanks for the addition!

AC/DC's  "Thunderstuck"  (covered by Luca Stricagnoli)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMPWfHqVj40

The beauty of this style is that virtually every genre of music can be adapted / arranged for it. Even folk who wouldn't normally listen to AC/DC (like me) can appreciate and enjoy the artistry and musicality when a piece is interpreted this way.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Just brilliant,  I love this feature.  Thanks for the postings, looking forward to next week.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

OMG

He must practice 23 hours a day. SSS and eat for 45 Mins  then record this for 15 mins.

Absolutely brilliant. I would need four hands two assistants, and a time machine to accomplish this.
What a superb musician.
He plays sweet child of mine as well - in which he plays two guitars - not an amazing feat - except of course UNLESS YOU'RE PLAYING THEM AT THE SAME TIME!
here's the link to it  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok5d8nXAngw

I feel exhilarated and inspired after watching this, but also  depressed at the same time knowing that he can do that and I can't come remotely close.
I don't think it would matter what guitar he brings to a campfire - he can make a $15.00 guitar sing !

Thank you for sharing this TF - it was awesome!

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

What's neat about watching this style, is that it awakens our own imagination about what can be done with a guitar. I'm not even at 10% of this level in ability, but have found myself trying some of the techniques these people use. The percussive stuff is very enjoyable, so I've been tapping, thumping, and knuckle-rapping my guitar in various ways to add some color ... and it's kinda fun.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

I love when people like that make the accoustic guitar talk. They turn the solo instrument into a choir with full orchestration.  The best I ever managed with a guitar is to make it mumble slightly.

Good one, Badeye ... Brownie's got a real smooth style with his finger-picking.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Isaac Albeniz's  "Asturias"  (covered by Ana Vidovic)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx7vOb7GNBg

Croatian-born Ms. Vidovic is considered a virtuoso guitarist, even though she's only in her mid-30's. She began playing at the age of 8, was performing internationally at 11, and was the youngest person ever to attend the prestigious Zagreb Academy of Music at just 13. "The Grammophon" once remarked on her extraordinary dexterity ... something we call flying fingers !

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

WOW!  I was mesmerized watching her fingers work that fretboard.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

A day late catching up on what is fast becoming my favourite chordie feature. Just incredible dexterity and speed. Keep em coming TF.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Jon Gomm   "Dance of the Last Rhino"   (original composition)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOofWEjNInc

Here's how to ruin the finish of a guitar. Jon obviously doesn't care, because the music comes first. Great use of innovative percussion techniques, and very infectious. Strummerboy Bill referred (in another thread) to a technique sometimes used to detune a guitar while playing. Jon doesn't do it this video, but if you check out "Passionflower", you'll see him making full use of his interesting tuning peg configuration to do this. Rhinos ... dance on!
