Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Wow, what an incredible voice this young lady has! I listened her version of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car", and it's as good Tracy's, no debate.

Nice find, nice post!

Jasmine Thompson... another amazing voice for you this lovely Thursday!  She was "discovered" at 13 on YouTube for her covers of popular songs. Her debut album, Bundle of Tantrums, was self-released while she continued songs on YouTube.  She's earned some airtime for sure, and has quite a beautiful voice.  Sometimes high and sometimes smoky low.  Enjoy!

Another "started on youtube" artist.  I'm not overly fond of the music on her new album, but the acoustic stuff you can find without all the extra editing and effects is really quite magnificent!  smile  Check out some of her Ingrid Michaelson Covers.   Enjoy!

Such a lovely song, written and performed so well. I'm sooo glad, MKM, that you stepped in to do a weekly feature. Music like this rarely gets heard, unless someone like you cares enough to make it known to the rest of us.

Thanks for this post, the ones preceding, and the ones to come.

Amy

To tell the truth...she is really good, but I actually enjoyed some of your renditions of several songs more smile especially your Delta Dawn song !

Glad ya'll are enjoying these!  Jim, you make me blush!  wink

Ok, so I had to listen to a bunch of this gal's songs to find one I liked the best.  Her voice is a bit too nasally for my likes.  She seriously needs to push consonants more, as her words tend to run together in a flurry of vowels.  I hope that doesn't sound too mean, but I almost didn't put her songs up because I'm picky like that!  She's STILL got some serious vocal skills, some really thoughtful lyrics, and chord progressions.  This one is one of more clearly vocalized songs she's got up there.  Hope you enjoy!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Great post, MKM! I agree with your assessment of her voice, but it seems to be intentional. A lot of the younger singers are doing this for some reason ... not sure what the appeal is. It's certainly a well-written piece, and it's encouraging to see so many younger musicians coming to the fore. I'm sooooo glad that hiphop doesn't rule them all.

Oh goodness... hip hop is getting quite crazy!  I've noticed a lot of it tends to merge in with Pop now, and even a lot of the newer country songs have a pop/hip hop flare to them.  It's frustrating for sure.  My 11 year old loves it all.  I'll get into a song and be all, "YEAH!  This is good!" and then they'll go from this great chorus line to some rap type junk for a verse and I'm like, "WHAT THE HECK?"  I get an eye roll then and "Mooooom" as she talks along with them.  Ugh.  -- She knows Tom Dooley though, so it's all good.  wink

And today, Emily Elbert, won 3rd place in Guitar Center's singer songwriter competition (2014 I think):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DGexGFkNJ0

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

You've had lots of great selections so far, MKM, but I have to say Emily is the best one yet ... what an amazing talent. Amazing range and expression with her voice, and pretty decent chops on the guitar, too! I really gotta wonder who could possibly place ahead of her in the GC competition ... had to be something extra special.

Loving your weekly feature, MKM ... by all means, keep 'em coming!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Ok, since I'm working late at night and have time - I dug deeper... she was a finalist in season 3 (she wasn't 3rd place... not sure how many finalists there were or where they placed).

The winner that year was Tess Henley:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toDIvU6SMdg

And this was Emily's finalist video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuUazyu3ZGg

I think I like Emily better myself.

Excellent! I love her self-analysis comment (I feel like there should be some cheesy 60's-like talking here) while she's performing. Thanks MKM .... really enjoyed this.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Ok, so I have been working all kinds of crazy extra hours and ... blah blah blah... I'm behind beyond belief with my weekly song!

So... I'll throw a little something out there for you.  I love Jewel.  Did you know that she comes from an entire musical family?  She's from Alaska?  She's was raised a small town gal, and her daddy was a yodeler!  Did you know, the first time she heard herself on the radio, she was in a grocery store and she thought she sounded like Kermit the Frog!  Even the most beautiful and talented people out there question their abilities!

So, here's Jewel with her dad (music 1:30):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id99RX2B5r0

I would like to submit 3 songs in this post of Amy"s  that apply to this new thread of which I had not seen till now either. (OK Im lame!)  Love the links and will defiantly look deeper into Ingrid.
I would like to introduce you guys to Kimberly Freeman.  This girl is super talented, and in these links I will show you 3 sides of her. In progressive order. (Does it have to stay acoustic?)

Can't go wrong with Jewel, MKM ... what an amazing talent in so many ways. She always showcases her abilities with such poise and grace.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

I'll bring you (a day late), Anna Nalick today!

https://soundcloud.com/annanalick

Honestly, listen to any of the songs she's got up here on soundcloud.  They're all awesome.  Now, you may not know her.  You probably won't recognize these songs either.  I'm sitting here wondering why?  Why don't I know these songs?  Guess what?

You do know her though! For some crazy unknown reason only one of her songs really made it.  I don't know why because she's really pretty amazing.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Very good, MKM ... her "sound" reminds me a lot of Alanis Morissette. I liked "Scars" best in her SoundCloud offering.

I agree.

Funny thing, did you know Alanis recorded her first demo around 13-14 years old?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7VaWvXnM_M
She had a Pop album in Canada when she was a young teen as well.
She moved to Los Angeles and began working on the sound we all know and love before she was even old enough to graduate high school.
She's "my age"  wink  So, I find this all very very fascinating when I look at the dates that she did these things.
I was graduating high school and trying to figure out how to "adult" while she was recording songs like this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdN0HcSbLSc

Amazing stuff.

Anna Nalick though, should be so much more popular than she currently is.  Hopefully, she'll get more songs out there and gain some more traction.  I'd far rather listen to her music (as well as all the others I've put up on this thread) than all the hullabaloo on the popular radio channels these days.  Maybe it's a sign I'm getting old.  I don't know... I am starting to sound like my parents though!  LOL!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Good info, MKM ... thanks.

I did know that Alanis was Canadian, but am badly out-numbered here on Chordie, so didn't wan't to overdo it with the flag waving! lol

And regarding Anna Nalick and the whole popularity thing ... popularity is pointless. It can be bought by purchasing airplay time on the mainstream radio stations, and when the DJs start calling it a hit, the mindless masses will consider it a hit. Good music is good music. Most of the prog rock and fingerstyle I like isn't popular, but who cares, right?

Anna's work is terrific, and stands on it's own two feet. Keep this great material coming, MKM. I'm enjoying this new world of talent I would never have heard of, if you weren't introducing it to us.

What an amazing guitarist ... she does really well with some of those shapes and transitions, especially for someone with fairly small hands. So I have to ask MKM: does watching Erin inspire you to get an electric?

:blushing:  I actually have one.  Having one doesn't make me any better at playing one though.  Ha!  I DO need to pick it up more!  There was another video of her on there where I would have SWORE she was playing a piano her fingers were moving so fast!  It was pretty amazing.  I didn't use it here because the lyrics didn't do much for me.
