Topic: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

Ok, here we are in the month of April already!
Song suggestions were to be from the 1960`s and the 1980`s era.   Your Song Suggestions came in, they were Put In The Hat and then randomly pulled out.   These are the Two Songs that came out of the hat.

1960`s -THE WEIGHT
From Wikipedia:  "The Weight" is a song originally by the Canadian-American group The Band that was released as Capitol Records single 2269 in 1968 and on the group's debut album Music from Big Pink. Written by Band member Robbie Robertson, the song is about a visitor's experiences in a town mentioned in the lyric's first line as Nazareth.

1980`s - JACK AND DIANE
From Wikipedia:  "Jack & Diane" is a 1982 hit rock song written and performed by American singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, then performing as "John Cougar." It appears on Mellencamp's album American Fool. It was chosen by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as one of the Songs of the Century. The single spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982, and, to date, is Mellencamp's most successful hit single.
According to Mellencamp, "Jack & Diane" was based on the 1962 Tennessee Williams film Sweet Bird of Youth.[2] He said of recording the song: "'Jack & Diane' was a terrible record to make. When I play it on guitar by myself, it sounds great; but I could never get the band to play along with me. That's why the arrangement's so weird. Stopping and starting, it's not very musical." Mellencamp has also stated that the clapping wasn't supposed to be included in the finished song. It was recorded with the clapping in order to help keep tempo and then it was to be removed. However, he realized the song did not work without it.

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

I've been so busy with work the past few months, I haven't had much time to pop into Chordie.  What a pleasant surprise to see a few songs up here that I know and love!  Perhaps when I get a little more time at some point this month I can try them out!

Kudos to Jan for taking the lead on creating these threads and keeping up with everything in here while I've been so busy!

I'm wrapping up learning both.

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

MKD has wanted The Weight as FSOTM for a while now.  I may have to serve him a few drinks then secretly record though!  Lol!  I wanted to try Jack and Diane myself but it's not working too well so far. sad I haven't entirely given up yet!

working on the weight will be a couple of days

out of tune out of key and out of touch

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

I'll do The Weight for sure. That one's been in my wheelhouse for a while. I don't do it well, but y'all can pretend you're feeling loose and friendly around a riverbank campfire after a day of hiking or fishing or something and it'll all be OK.  (Reference MKM's quote in my signature block)

I don't know Jack and Diane, but it's a great song and should be a pretty straight forward strummer.  Once I get the rhythm down, I'll probably convert to some finger pattern or another because that's more fun for me usually. It may take me until May or June, but I'm going to do it.

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

I did a copy of The Weight tonight complete with excessive use of reverb and a harmonica, but Soundcloud appears to be down this evening.  I can't connect.  So you will all have to live another day without hearing my cauterwauling and random hootification.

Soundcloud came back up.  Here you go.

Love the re-arrangement of the chords and the chill feel. I'm in the process of re-arranging this one too, albeit in a slightly different way. Great work.

Only one suggestion: Zurf terminology should include fedorafication and hat-erwauling.

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE

Well that's probably why the guitar is weak in the mix. I wasn't wearing a proper hat.

The rearrangement of the chords was accidental, but it sounded OK and so I left it. I treat these songs as I would a virtual campfire. It's nice that you thought I was smart enough to do that on purpose.

I find having a few drinks then trying to squirm an ad-libbed bass line in a Leonard Cohen song in some mode or another using a root of C and capo 4 and a whole bunch of chords that don't seem like they ought to be there next to impossible rather than instinctive.  You know, as a random example and definitely not something I was actually doing at midnight when I had to get up early for Easter the next day.

Sounds like you have a glass is half full attitude about it though.

Also you didn't catch my little tease on the "you thought I was smart" comment.

Baldguitardude you did a great job on both songs. Enjoyed Jack and Diane and that is not an easy song to do as well as you did it.
