Re: JANUARY 2018 FSOTM - SONGS J AND D - SINGERS, BANDS K AND R

Hey. Sorry I've not been around much this month yet.

Here's a D song.  Steve Goodman and Jimmy Buffett's Distantly In Love -
https://soundcloud.com/user-35218982/di … cfsotm-jan

And, because I messed up and thought it was L as the other song instead of J, I recorded Rodney Crowell's Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight, which I will provide as a special bonus song.  Maybe we can pretend that his name is spelled Krowell?

I guess now I'll work on a J song.

I enjoyed all three videos Neophyte! I was particularly impressed by Daniel. It's not easy arranging a piano song for guitar.  Well done!

Thanks - but someone else did the hard work, I just played it smile

I had a listen to your three songs as well, the Jimmy Buffet song really suited your style; nice and mellow, was perfect for when I was having my breakfast and morning coffee!! smile

Ha ha, thanks ... with a couple of young kids around I don't get much free time, so tend to put the songs in a setlist, give them a quick run through to make sure there are no "missing" chords, or anything unexpected (like the Ab in "Daniel") and edit my chord sheets as necessary. Then I'll make sure I've got about half an hour to spare, 5 minutes to set up, two takes of a song is about 7 minutes, two songs takes about 15 minutes, 5 minutes take down, and I have around 5 minutes spare wink

That's why a single microphone into my iPhone is ideal for me at the moment ... smile

Well, playing piano tunes on guitar isn't that easy either. While someone else may have put up the chords, you had to arrange the way in which you were going to play it. In my experience, with piano tunes, it's either try to replicate the feel or go a completely different way.  I usually do the latter, but I think you did a terrific job of arranging your playing approach to give the feel of Elton John's piano on that song. Not an easy task at all, even if someone else figured out the chord structure.

Here you go!  It hits both the D song and the R artist category.  Eddie Rabbitt's Drivin' My Life Away.  I was just goofing around with this one. I haven't played it in forever and decided to get my head into a country rocker in '78 mode.

I really had been playing my Tak and decided I had to pull out the big dreadnaught to okay that one. It's not right to play a country rock song on anything else if there's one available.

"K" song.  Hal Ketchum's Small Town Saturday Night, in which Zurf plays a solo on the wrong string, speeds up, forgets the order of lyrics, and gratuitously inserts four bars wherever he deems it convenient.

You are an excellent entertainer. I absolutely love it when you put comments and a little humor in it.
I thought you and the guitar sounded great !
Way to nail it !

I'll send you my e-mail address. Send me a chord chart of a song you'd like me to try, and I'll try it. I can't promise it will sound anything like you expect, but I'll try it.

Edit to add: That guitar always sounds good. It's so nice, it practically plays itself. It's my Guild D40 Bluegrass Jubilee.  If you ever get the chance to play one, take it. The bass is deep, clear, and LOUD.  It sounds good strummed, fingerpicked, or flatpicked.  Absolutely wonderful guitar.  As for me, I'll just say that I'm glad you like it. To me, my voice sounds strained and off-key, but I am truly glad that you like it and I thank you for saying so. It's a real encouragement.

Re: JANUARY 2018 FSOTM - SONGS J AND D - SINGERS, BANDS K AND R

Wow neophytte and zurf you two have been busy, love it.  I sat and listened to them all today now I am back from holiday and have plenty of internet access again.   So congratulations you two, very impressive the sheer number you guys managed to perform this month.

I agree neophytte, you are a human jukebox, you sure can turn them out.  You did one song that i never heard of before (Dedicated Follower of Fashiion by the Kinks) so that was a new one to me.   Probably vocally in my opinion ~Don`t Want Me Baby~ was your best vocally and possibly ~Living Doll~ .   I thought ~Those Were The Days~  well done but maybe a bit low vocally for you?, wondered if a different chord on this song for you?.   I liked the added video of your setup too.

Zurf,  I thought you did a good job of most of your covers and I particularly liked Carl Ketchin`s ~ Small Town Saturday Night~, loved the commentary as you performed it too.  Also ~Drivin` My Life Away~  by Eddie Rabbit I enjoyed, you made it lots of fun, makes me want to learn it and play it but i couldn`t ever play guitar like you managed to on this one, you nailed it on the guitar.   Agree with Jim you are an entertainer.

So with all that said ........ the month is running out and I hope some of you others out there will have a go at some of these ...... I am sure you can fit at least one song in.  I hope to do one this week after the big clean up and unpacking is done.  I may even try to do one tonight as long as I don`t fall asleep on the couch tonight after the unpacking.  Down side of holidays is the clean up when ya get home.
