Guitar chord forum - chordie → Other string instruments → Learning Piano
What do people think is the best way to go about self-learning pop, rock, blues etc. on the piano? Basically that's what I did with guitar and mandolin (for better or for worse), and I can hold my own in a jam session with those.
Is there a book, online lesson etc that people would suggest? Or should I break the habit of a lifetime and get lessons?

Welcome to Chordie! I'm self-taught on both guitar and piano, and would highly recommend taking lessons. There are so many gaps in my understanding and technique, that it would've saved me hundreds of hours over my lifetime if I'd broke my own lifetime habit. Any instrument can be enjoyed at some level without structured teaching, but it's highly unusual for anyone to get truly good at one without proper instruction.

I taught myself guitar, and I'd consider it a long slog to become mediocre; I've had lessons for my son on keyboards and he's become quite good in a short period of time ... if I were to do it again, or recommend, I'd go for the lessons ...
And welcome (or welcome back, whichever is appropriate) ...

I teach classical guitar and the first thing I do is teach them to read music and timing, so I think it is always best to take lessons. With guitar, or any other instrument. I have heard a couple who play Piano by ear and it sound limited. So take lessons so you can be the best you can be and not question later if you did the right thing.
