Topic: What My Life’s About

Just a reflective song about my life and the path I've taken.

What My Life’s About by - Jeff Gilpin

3/16/2019

V[.]1

[G]Old McDonald had a farm was a song I used to know.

Then I [C]joined the military and learned a[G]nother version so

I could [C]sing away my troubles [G]laugh away my fears, and

Get through the [D]learning, and the growing,

And to [D]keep my doubt from showing

While I [D]got along and made it through the [C]years.

C[.]1

And I [Em]made it through the times that I didn’t know I could

While the [G]world was a changing, society rearranging,

And I [Em]learned how I could fit in, and I learned to get it done,

And I [D]learned to work a job and [C]somehow make it fun.

V[.]2

[G]After many years of military I finally moved along.

Then I [C]set my sights on doing [G]what next came along.

A job sup[C]porting what for years I’d [G]done for a long while,

Trying to [D]take all what I knew,

Put my [D]feet into different shoes,

And I [D]learned to work my new job, but [C]in a different style.

C[.]2

And I [Em]managed to learn the differences from what I did before,

While the [G]world was still a changing, society rearranging,

And just [Em]when I’d learned to fit in, and I’d learned just what to do,

The [D]world exploded one day [C]somehow split into.

V[.]3

[G]After 9/11, on that fateful year I learned

How to [C]redirect my anger and my [G]heart all full of scorn.

I had to [C]focus on the changes, and the [G]changes yet to come,

While [D]my world was rebuilding,

For [D]me and all my siblings,

And to [D]finish all that still needed to be [C]done.

C[.]3

And [Em]where I was needed changed from time to time,

But the [G]focus on the mission never left my mind,

And it’s [Em]still with me today of that I have no doubt.

It’s helped me [D]know in my heart what my [C]life’s about.

Thanks Jim - I will try to get it recorded...I'm a bit behind on a few of my newer songs.

Re: What My Life’s About

That's a powerful reflection, JETS, and I was compelled to re-read several times. Your line about learning to re-direct anger is right in my wheel house, and I can't honestly say I've been 100% successful yet. And finally ... my hat's off to you for your military service. I've seen how that lifestyle has deeply affected people I've known, and you have my gratitude and respect.

Re: What My Life’s About

Thanks TF. It is always a work in progress for me, which i find for any major emotional impact I've had in my life. I try not to let things knock me too much off center. As for my military service, it has been my honor to serve and I feel I'm still serving, but differently now that I'm a contractor.

Re: What My Life’s About

Hi Jeff. That is such an emotional song. Strong lyrics and clear sentiments. We all feel
anger and rage when events like 9/11 happen, I remember watching it live on TV, but as you say, you must redirect your anger and remember as my mother used to say "there's good and bad where ever you come from, whatever your colour, creed or religion" . Don't go destroying the hive because one bee stung you?
This is a great song as I'm sure the recording will be.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: What My Life’s About

Thanks Phil - Still working it out but that is the plan.
