Topic: The Last Great American Love Song

Here's my version of the challenge SB Bill gave in another songwriting thread with chords now (just posted the lyrics on his thread). I kept the chords pretty straight forward (GCDEm) so it's fairly easy to play for folks if anyone wants to try it out. I'll try and get it up on my soundcloud site before Sunday (July 7th) so you can get how I play it. Thanks Bill for getting me started on this.

The Last Great American Love Song By Jeff Gilpin - Jets60 &  Bill Craig - Strummerboy Bill

July 3rd, 2019

_[.]_

Verse 1

[G]Someone in a song I wrote de[D]cided they were real

So [C]commenced to get in [D]trouble near and [G]far.

They’d try to get along, but [D]just like a lot of songs

They [C]ended down and out at a local [D]bar.

_[.]_

Chorus 1

Now the [Em]barman sympathetic tried [C]consoling,

[D]Conversing about how it all turned [G]wrong.

But [Em]they just kept on crying, and they [C]said as they were sighing

I’m [D]living the last great [C]American love [Em]song.

_[.]_

Verse 2

[G]Someone in a dream I had de[D]cided to awaken,

And to [C]run off into the [D]hours of the [G]day,

But they made the people sleepy. Some were [D]yawning; some were weepy.

So [C]someone kept on about their merry [D]way.

_[.]_

Chorus 2

Now to [Em]no one’s delight the day de[C]scended,

As [D]someone’s happy day was turning [G]wrong.

So [Em]someone turned out tired as the [C]day about expired,

And put to [D]bed the last great [C]American love [Em]song.

_[.]_

Bridge

The [C]great American love song’s never [G]ending,

And that [D]song leads us on a path that never [G]ends.

[C]When it’s said in done we’ll stop [G]pretending

The last [D]great American love song...just [C]went on far too long.

_[.]_

Verse 3

[G]Someone in a doctor’s office was [D]describing maladies

To a [C]doctor that [D]was way over their [G]head.

But the doctor took it in from [D]beginning to the end,

Trying to [C]figure out just why they weren’t yet [D]dead.

_[.]_

Chorus 3

But [Em]death just like life comes to us [C]all

For [D]those who’re deathly sick or for the [G]strong

So [Em]as through life we cope, it’s [C]best for us to hope

That we'll [D]end up in The last great [C]American Love [G]song.

Re: The Last Great American Love Song

If Mr. Bean ever wrote a song it would  have been this one.  This is so good hope there will be more like this.  We all need some humor.

Music is what feelings sound like.
Music is life, that why our hearts have beats.

Re: The Last Great American Love Song

Excellent Jeff look forward to you putting it up on soundcloud.

Re: The Last Great American Love Song

Great work Jeff. I like the way you've expanded Bill's one line then your first draught to an entertaining and humourous song.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Thanks to all for the comments and especially - thank you, Jeff for using your talents to craft my couple of phrases into this great tune!

Re: The Last Great American Love Song

Loved it, Jeff and the style you played it in reminded me of the old days, when we used to watch a show called "Hootenanny" on Saturday nights. Folksy, mellow and thought-provoking. Never would have thought this snippet of what I never could use would turn into something so pleasant to listen to.

Thanks again!
