Topic: It's Love That You Lose

So I thought I would start the new year off with a song I wrote this morning.
It's about a love that ended because of chasing dreams.
Sorry that I used the same chords for the chorus as I did with the verses - is that ok to do ?  It just sounded good tome and I'm not a good enough musician to come with something else smile
Comments appreciated. !

Bahaha - changed my mind, changed the title and switched up a verse and chorus....  just seemed better after playing it
Jim

It's Love That You Lose By Jim Kenyon

verse 1

.

[D]Sitting by the [C]campfire, as my [G]guitar weeps so [D] sad

[D]As I’m dreaming of the[C] soft look that [G]her eyes once[D] had

[D] start singing a [C]love poem, that I [G]once knew by[D] heart

[D]but the meanings gone [C] missing, since [G] we’ve been a[D]part

verse 2

.

[D]I recall every [C] memory and I [G] still call out her[D] name

[D] you know my heart’s [C]aching, won’t [G]never be the [D]same

[D]I should leave love to [C]others, that [G]can plant better [D]roots

[D] someone that can[C] stay put, and wash [G] the mud off their [D]boots

.

Chorus

.

[D]someday we ‘ll get [C]together, talk of [G]what we used to [D]be

[D]how much that I [C]loved her, and how [G]much she loved [D]me

[D]but decisions we [C]made, and the lives [G]that we did [D]choose

[D] chasing different [C]dreams, knowing it’s [G] love that we [D] lose

verse 3

.

[D]It could have been [C]so different I [G] guess I’ll never [D]know

[D] I should’ve known [C] better, than to [G]ever let her [D]go

[D] Oh those heartstrings [C]and feelings, so[G] hard to for[D]get

[D] Because lovin' her [C] is the one thing [G] I'll never re[D]gret.

.

Chorus

[D] chasing different [C]dreams, knowing it’s [G] love that we [D] lose

[D] chasing different [C]dreams, knowing it’s [G] love that we [D] lose

yeah it's [C]hardknowing it’s [G] love that we [D] lose

Re: It's Love That You Lose

heart warming but sad, great words Jim. many top songs have used the same chords for verse and chorus, first one comes to mind is "dream, dream, dream" by various artists including the Everley brothers and Roy Orbison. maybe the addition of a bridge?

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: It's Love That You Lose

lol Phill -  a bridge ??? -  I don't even know what that means.  smile wink
Thanks for the kind words

feel free to add one, I'm sure it would improve the song.

basically a cowboy style song in my mind

Re: It's Love That You Lose

Jim those two opening lines have a magical flow that took me right into your song.
Sitting by the campfire, and my guitar weeps so sad
As I’m dreaming of the soft look that her eyes once had
I can imagine  a man drifting from one place to another his guitar his best friend singing and thinking about how his way of life meant he lost the love of a beautiful lady.
The only change I would make to the first line is I would change the word and to as.
Sitting by the campfire as my guitar weeps so so sad.
Brilliant song you written there tells a good story.

Re: It's Love That You Lose

Really enjoyed that Jim. Words fit together nicely. I made an adjustment for myself when I played it. I changed the first two lines of the chorus chord pattern to C G G D, and then the last two go back to your original D C G D.

Jeff

Thanks -  I may give that a try as well.
As you know, I'm not much of a musician so most of the stuff I write is pretty basic.
If you happen to record it - I would love it if you would send it to me .

Thanks again !

" I used the same chords for the chorus as I did with the verses - is that ok to do?"

Perfectly fine!

One of the tricks for that to add variation is palm muting or partially palm muting the verse and nice full open chorus.  If you can finger pick (I cant), you can pick the verse's and strum the Chorus or any variation there of  big_smile

Example from Social Distortion   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQOJY4NXYzM

Betty blowtorch did it a lot!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He8gKsbc7Os

I know both of those are pretty heavy music wise, but the technique transfers to acoustic just as good.

Sometimes just starting the chorus as an inversion of the main line works also.

I have posted this before, but when writing, this is the best tool ever for variations.  Basically auto theory / Wheel of 5ths for dummies.

Re: It's Love That You Lose

I took my swing at this, removed a word here and there for my singing style, but kept the heart of the song.
I played with the chorus chords,  Its not metalized, more like "Mike Nessified"  big_smile

even more changes and the bpm will be 130
will update again after i get it all down

Re: It's Love That You Lose

Hey Jim - sent you a scratch of my version (to your email in your chordie profile), along with how I swapped the chords around in the chorus. Let me know how you like it.
