Topic: Picture this...

Your in a crowded bar at an open mic night, all eyes are on the stage. Suddenly after a few beers you find yourself up there with a guitar in hand. You're given the chance to play one song to impress the crowd. What do you play??

Re: Picture this...

The best thing to play is your favorite song to play.

To impress the crowd

1)  You have to play from the heart.

2)  Play well

You can't grab a song out of thin air... and "after a few beers" doesn't do well either... you think you are playing well, but not the crowd.

Picture this....

After visiting an open mic for several weeks and watching the crowd... I picked 5 songs (you were given 5 songs to play)... and practiced the heck out of them...

But the guy before me didn't just play one of them, or two of them or three of them....  He played 4 of the 5 songs I had practiced hard on....

I went up next and grabbed 4 different songs from other stuff that I had worked on...  and as pissed as I was, I realized that the guy before me and I had similar taste in music.... so we got together and played gigs for about 3 years... Till I moved out of town... and we still are great friends.

Anyway...

Play what you like... Play something that touches you.. and try to relate that to the crowd.   Then, you'll impress them and you might get to play more than one song....

Take care

Re: Picture this...

or you could really get the crowd going by making something up on the spot, including imnprovising with lyrics.

It will either be good or give the crowd a good laugh.

they might think yer weird but as long as you have fun.

Re: Picture this...

If i had a band with me, i'd play Come Sail Away by Styx,

Otherwise, probably American Pie.

Re: Picture this...

Stairway to heaven by led zepplin or Couldn't stand the weather by stevir ray vaughan.

Hehe bootleger, hate to break it to you but if you played Stairway to Heaven you'd probably be kicked out... the general consensus among guitar players is that everyone knows how to play it and its really really overplayed. The only really good version is the original, in my opinion.

Re: Picture this...

Save Tonight, Eagle Eye Cherry

Not many people think of it anymore, but its a good song, and I can sing it from the heart and soul...I also do a lil improv at the end, and sing it a bit different than the album.

I also feel that whatever you play needs to be something that is coming from within...or else its just another cover. If you don't get a song's meaning, or it has no relevance to you, you won't be able to play it like you should....just a few thoughts from a new-bee...

Re: Picture this...

Wow, I would play a song that I love and I know I play well. So, either Wonderwall by Oasis, or Freshman by The Verve  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">
