Topic: A Painted Song

I try and write songs that take someone who is playing the song or listening to the song to another place in their mind. I guess it could be like relating to a similar memory or better yet picturing a story I’m trying to tell in the song but if I can bring a picture to someone’s head I think I’ve done my job and the better the picture they get the better job I did.  Anyway that’s what this song is about and I hope you like it.

A Painted Song By Jeff Gilpin

December 8th 2007

Intro

[G]

Verse 1

Painting pictures in my [C]mind [D]

That I color with my [G]rhymes [Em]

What will they look like in my [C]head [Am]

And what will others see in[D]stead

Verse 2

Should I paint one full of [C]joy [D]

Memories of my little [G]boy [Em]

Although he’s older current[C]ly [D]

He’ll always be my boy to [G]me

Chorus

The [C]words flow like [D]paint

On the [G]canvas of the [Em]mind

The [C]music sets the [D]mood

Put to[G]gether we can [Em]find

[C]How the picture looks to [D]me

[C]Though you may see it different[D]ly [D7]

Verse 3

Maybe I’ll paint a song that’s [C]sad [D]

About an experience that I [G]had [Em]

That disappointed in the [C]end [Am]

But how should I be[D]gin

Verse 4

Better yet a song that’s [C]crazy [D]

About goofing off or being [G]lazy [Em]

It doesn’t have to mean a [C]thing [D]

Just a song I like to [G]sing

Chorus

The [C]words flow like [D]paint

On the [G]canvas of the [Em]mind

The [C]music sets the [D]mood

Put to[G]gether we can [Em]find

[C]How the picture looks to [D]me

[C]Though you may see it different[D]ly [D7]

Verse 5

I think I’ll paint a meta[C]phor [D]

About something I a[G]dore [Em]

Like writing songs that catch your [C]ear [Am]

And paint a picture you can [D]hear

Verse 6

I hope I paint my lyrics [C]true [D]

So that a picture comes to [G]you [Em]

As you hear the words I [C]sing [D]

I'll Imagine what you’re pictu[G]ring

Chorus

The [C]words flow like [D]paint

On the [G]canvas of the [Em]mind

The [C]music sets the [D]mood

Put to[G]gether we can [Em]find

[C]How the picture looks you [D]see

I [C]hope you get to [D]see it just like [G]me

Re: A Painted Song

Reminds me of 'picture from life's other side' jets smile
I love it when a song can take you back, or off somewhere, like everytime I hear 'country state of mind' I think about my old swimmin' hole and the days I spent leaned back with a cane pole.....
anyhoo, nice idea and nice song jets big_smile,

Re: A Painted Song

Thanks Reb. I usually try to write with that in mind but sometimes I stumble and write a real clunker.

Picture from lifes other side is one of my favorite Hank songs and I think I'll go give it a play now.

Re: A Painted Song

You know I find that even with a 'real clunker', I've still made some kind of progress with my writing, like maybe even though the song wasn't all that good, maybe I gained experience and skill from something.... like when I draw a picture and shade it all wrong and I get mad cuz I finally had the hands perfect....
I try to take each song as a step forward, maybe it didn't sound great, but maybe I picked up on words that sound good together, or found a new rythym, or maybe even turned out a couple of good lines for future use.
Rome wasn't built in a day, they had to learn how to use a hammer and nails first! (well maybe stone and mortar? or sumthin... anyway you get the point. You've gotta know how to build the birdhouse before you can build a cathedral).
Take it easy (which means something like 'take care') big_smile,

Re: A Painted Song

I agree 100%! I think the reason I write songs as much as I do, at least one of them, is to try and improve. Some day songwriting is really a struggle and the songs don't come easy but other days I get a lot of ideas and it's like I can't stop writing even if I wanted to.

Jets!

Mission acomplished!

So good. I have a song written called Canvas! Your song  reminded me of it.

Must go read it again.

Thanks Jets!
