Topic: "Once Upon a Time"

The story which I've written many songs on already of how I was fortunate enough to meet and marry my wife has always seemed a bit like a fairy tale to me so I decided to write a fairy tale/story song about it. I cut it short…no really…but even so it is still a very long song so to help I kept the chords easy, kind of folky and predictable. I left out all the ups and down that are part of the process where you figure out the one who was meant for you just because my fingers would get tired if I made the song any longer, just know there is more to the story than is told here.

Once Upon a Time By Jeff Gilpin

February 24th, 2008

Verse 1

[Em]Onceupon a [D]time

[C]In two far off [D]lands

A [Em]fabled journey [D]started

By a [C]woman [D]and a [Em]man

Verse 2

[Em]She was filled with [D]questions

Her [C]mind a butter [D]churn

[Em]So she wandered [D]from her home

To [C]see what [D]she could [Em]learn

Verse 3

[Em]Not so filled [D]up with thoughts

[C]He happy in his [D]life

[Em]Until one day to [D]his surprise

He [C]saw his [D]parent’s [Em]strife

Verse 4

[Em]They split up and [D]set him free

[C]Not far from a [D]man

So [Em]he went off to [D]wander

A[C]cross the [D]open [Em]land

Chorus

[C]She discovered [D]wonders

While [C]he discovered [Em]war

[C]She went off to [D]learn more

[C]He had no clue what was in [D]store [D7]

Verse 5

[Em]He learned about [D]people

Both the [C]good and the [D]bad

The [Em]good didn’t have it as [D]good as they thought

And the [C]bad [D]weren’t so [Em]sad

Verse 6

While [Em]she got more questions than [D]answers

[C]Made her just a bit more [D]confused

She [Em]learned there was so much [D]out there

And [C]she would [D]have to [Em]choose

Verse 7

So [Em]she reigned her[D]self in

[C]Eventually settled [D]down

But [Em]in the end could [D]not decide

Where [C]answers [D]could be [Em]found

Chorus

[C]She questioned all the [D]wonders

He [C]questioned how people [Em]live

[C]She kept looking for [D]answers

[C]He gave all he could [D]give[D7]

Verse 8

[Em]Like fairy tales from [D]times of old

They [C]found each other one [D]day

While [Em]she was still looked for [D]answers

[C]He could [D]not look a[Em]way

Verse 9

He [Em]finally found all that was [D]good

And [C]perhaps just a little [D]bad

But [Em]he could not answer her [D]questions

[C]Only meager [D]answers he [Em]had

Verse 10

[Em]She left without all her [D]answers

And [C]even more questions re[D]mained

When you [Em]love and your love [D]goes away

[C]Will the [D]feelings stay the [Em]same

Chorus

[C]She questioned why she was [D]leaving

He [C]questioned why he let her [Em]go

[C]She wondered if she’d [D]see him again

[C]He wondered why it him hurt [D]so[D7]

Verse 11

[Em]He went away to [D]far off lands

[C]Thinking he would forget her [D]soon

But [Em]she remained in [D]spite of the pain

That [C]kept his [D]life in [Em]gloom

Verse 12

[Em]She set aside her [D]questions

[C]Tried to get on with [D]life

[Em]While her parents [D]tried to find a man

For [C]whom she would [D]make a good [Em]wife

Verse 13

A [Em]written corres[D]pondence

That [C]eventually found its [D]way

Re[Em]ignited what still [D]smoldered

A re[C]union [D]soon to be one [Em]day

Chorus

[C]He asked her a [D]question

She [C]answered as best she [Em]could

[C]She said she was his if he came for [D]her

[C]All he could say was that he [D]would [D7]

Verse 14

[Em]Once upon a [D]time

[C]In a land far a[D]way

The [Em]woman and man were [D]married

And she’s still [C]answering her [D]questions to this [C]day [Em]

Re: "Once Upon a Time"

Really nice, Jeff.

Moving, and optimistic.

Nice chord progressions, too. Well done!

Just play

Re: "Once Upon a Time"

I love it.

I think life is a long journey that we should keep on until we find what we are looking for, for you and for me my friend, it was finding that one special woman, and for them it was finding us, but none the less, life is not over just because we have found our soul mates, the journey is a long adventure, and as when your driving, don't go to sleep or you might leave the road. Which means; don't let the love/romance sit on the back boiler.

I usually write my love songs about my wife too, in fact she pops up in most of my songs somewhere.

keep strummin' my friend

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: "Once Upon a Time"

Not sure of the kind of critique you are after here smile.. the song is fine... some things I'd balance a little structurally ... Other than that Nice song smile

Cheers

Re: "Once Upon a Time"

Hey Phil and Noel - Thanks for your comments

Phil - I keep seeing my wife pop up in my songs too.
Noel - I thought about keeping it a little more even, verses to chorus I mean, but the story wasn't like that so I let the story dictate the structure of the song which is why the ratio of verses between chorses is not the same through out the song. That was my idea anyways but that is just the critique I'm looking for and think we need more of here so thanks for that.

Re: "Once Upon a Time"

Hi again, Jeff.

This one brings to mind the epic tales of star-crossed lovers passed down through the generations in song.  Tales shared by minstrels and bards - I say, don't worry about the length of it - just tell the story as it happened.
