Topic: Yesteryears

Okay, this is where this song comes from. Our house is about the only house in our neighborhood that doesn't have some type of fence around at least part of the yard. The reason why you ask? I HATE FENCES. Fences are for keeping cows from getting out (and I don't own cows) and fences are a pain in the butt to mow around (and I get to do the mowing) so no fence. In the places where I grew up only a few houses that had fences and the ones that did were either farms or snobby people and I surely hope I have not grown up to be snobby. Anyway, that was the start of it. I was also thinking who I know on my street and really it's about 3 people who I really know well, which I think is pretty sad. So anyway there you go; that's my creative process. So here is my next song, insert drum roll here.

Yesteryears By Jeff Gilpin

March 20, 2007

Verse 1

[C]I have a lot of [F]neighbors but [C]only know a [G]few

I [F]really don't know [C]why I just [G]haven't had the time [G7]to

It [C]makes me think of [F]way back when [C]I was pretty [G]small

Back [F]then I knew my [C]neighbors and could [G]name the one and [G7]all

It [Am]seems now we're all too busy [F]just with our own stuff

With [C]work and play and these [F]kids today [G]I've about had enough

Chorus

I [C]miss the simpler time when [F]neighbor also meant [C]friend

[C]Someone who you could turn to and it [F]wouldn't [Am]matter [G]when

[C]They wouldn't mind your problems or [F]you finding out about [C]their's[Am]

Yep, I [C]wish we all were neighbors [G]like we had in yester[F]years [C]

Verse 2

Now [C]I grew up in the [F]country of [C]that I'm proud to [G]say

But country [F]life or city [C]strife didn't [G]matter back in the [G7]day

You could [C]depend on pretty much [F]everyone [C]up and down your [G]block

You [F]knew them because you [C]lived with them and [G]not behind a [G7]lock

[Am]Today at most a friendly grunt is all you [F]hear from car to door

And a [C]friendly conver[F]sation is un[G]heard of anymore

Break

Way [F]back before computers or [G]satellite TV

I [Em]ate what I wanted and didn't think [G]twice

[F]Kids would go outside with [G]out being made

[F]And show up after dark, those days were [C]nice[G7]

Verse 3

So [C]what can we [F]do to stop the [C]continual ever de[G]cline

To [F]make sure we are [C]not just robots [G]doing the daily [G7]grind

How about a [C]Howdy, or a [F]what's up or a [G]hey, how's it [G]going

Just a [F]little thaw to the [C]ice-age that [G]we need to stop [G7]growing

[Am]Hopefully they will pass it on and [F]pretty soon everyone

Will be [C]sporting a grin in[F]stead of a frown [G]man, won't that be fun

Re: Yesteryears

Great idea for a song and I echo your sentiments - Our neighborhood is pretty friendly because lots of people walk their dogs or stroll in the evenings. I enjoy knowing my neighbors and chatting - but some folks just choose to remain aloof and mysterious.

Re: Yesteryears

good song Jeff.

But I love fences and hedges

Maybe I am just used to them?

I noticed when I was in america that not a lot had enclosed gardens, lots of open plan gardens where the lawn never ends apart from a pathway to the door, or driveway.

In the UK I tihnk the thing to do is get your land and mark it out and dont let any fecker cross the line, even if friendly or not.

My back garden looks onto about 10 back gardens and if I never had a fence to seperate three neighbours I would build a wall and paint happy faces all over it

only open areas I love is the hills and mountains.

Ken

but damn good song

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Yesteryears

That is what I call a hell of a good tune. Excellent Stuff. Paints a picture, has realism, nice flow, never looses track of the subject. again very good stuff in my humble opinion.

Re: Yesteryears

Thank you Steve. I like it too and think the music fits well. I'll record it as soon as I can figure out this software I got. For some reason my USB microphone is not working with the SW. I think I have to have one that plugs into their little USB plug-in so I might need to get more HW. Frustrating

Re: Yesteryears

Hi Jeff,

I also liked your song.

I got fed up with having to be continually security conscious and having neighbours I did not know in Nottingham (UK). Here in Porugal I have three close neighbours who are now all friends, we share troubles and joys and never lock our caravans or vehicles. It is great!!
