Topic: Too many songs getting removed.

Dear chordie.com,

After having many of my favorite songs removed for alleged "copyright" violations I've decided to stop visiting you. I just don't see how you can keep throwing away songs just when I was starting to learn them and expect me to keep coming back. How can you teach me to play my favorite songs when you keep taking them down? Maybe you shouldn't try to hard to "do the right thing". Maybe you should focus on fulfilling your mission. Have a great life.

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

First off I apologise for possibly stepping on anyone's toes by addressing this post, especially you Per as I know how much this all means to you personally.

Hi Obscurite and thank you for your posting,

Sadly there are organizations out there that are "rattling their sabers" in the direction of all music sharing websites, not just those that are allowing for "pirating" of recorded music.  As an example you might look up www.olga.net on the Web.  They had been around for a real long time and hosted tons of Tabs and music on their servers until they were served papers.... If you had purchased some popular guitar learning software a couple of years ago, specifically the e-Media Guitar Method sold on TV and via online outlets like Musician's Friend.  You would have found that all of the music included in their lesson plans were pulled right off of Olga's servers.

Chordie is one of the largest music sites on the planet and naturally the "crosshairs" are pointed in our direction also.  Even though Chordie does not host any music files directly on their site, which may be our saving grace, the continued existence of Chordie is also threatened.  Believe me I too regret that the publishers of music scores are so tight about allowing others to learn, play and enjoy the music of the artists and groups, but they feel they are protecting a revenue stream.

One could argue that although most tabs available online are the result of someone sitting down and figuring out how to play a particular tune, usually by purchasing the CD and listening to it over and over.... resulting in bringing that music to someone who otherwise would not have heard the band or their music.  In some fashion promoting the artists and their recordings, ultimately introducing their product (ie: music) to a wider audience.  That intangible beneficial result of sites like Chordie are overlooked in the muck of "legalese" being tossed around in courtrooms around the world.

I am sure that the administrators of Chordie are doing everything possible to keep providing the absolute best service in support of the huge membership community... but sometimes you have to pick your battles.  I am sorry that you are disappointed that some music has had to be removed.  As for me I'm fully in support of Per and his vision, and hanging in here however it all goes down.

On a personal note to Per:  If you should find yourself in need of legal services,  if you would put the word out.... I'm sure you would find yourself in receipt of more support than you could imagine.  If every Chordie member tossed a $5.00 bill in a hat we could build a reasonable defense reserve fund!  Just a thought.... where do I send my contribution?

Doug I think you missed your calling they sure could use you at the United Nations you have expressed yourself eloquently and I know I would have said something a little different. it kind of reminds me of a guest coming to dinner and complaining about the food and I dont recall seeing a mission statement anywhere on this site smile

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

Would it be possible to have the alleged copyright owners info listed on the songs that have been removed?

Sites like Chordie are only keeping the music alive!

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

Well stated all. Let us know where to send our legal fund donations.

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

Fantastic post Doug - The MPA (publishers - not musicians) have been fighting tab sights for a few years now. They have big money lawyers and are threatening jail time for web site owners who host tabs. Per is a family man who created Chordie as a hobby - It is not a primary source of income. In his shoes, I would also immediately block songs that were specifically requested to be removed by the artist or publisher.

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

I too  agree with Doug & Co
all fellow chordians should back Per with our voice(written petition) and donations.

I dont think anyone makes big bucks learing from this site? that includes the creator Per!

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

What a total muppet!

I've also noticed a lot of songs being pulled but there are still thousands to pick from! If your after a particular song and it's not here, use another website, you don't have to be exclusive to Chordie...do you?  Personally, I copy all my song into a book as it's easier to carry that around than a computer.

Anyhow, this whole issue of copyright is like a car manufacturer pulling all repair manuals off the shelf to stop people actually making their own Ford!  Rediculous!

Keep up the good work Chordie!

and if they keep the manuals on the shelves, they have made a special shaped tool that only the dealers have so you waste your money on the manual and then having to take it to the specialist.

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

Hey Doug, moving last weekend and had no computer access, what this person is complaining about is going way over the top, like quitting this great site is going to get him anything, there are songs that I would like to see on chordie too,but I don't dwell on not having that song, I just find another song to work on, some advice for this person is that when find a song on the site down load and print it, then you have it permanently, depending on the song being here again is a risk, really just a slight one but a risk. I would have a pretty limited music list if it weren't for chordie, With few exceptions chordie has at least one tune by just about everyone, I can't remember the last time I didn't find what I was looking for. As I said I do relate to him, as I am also a great fan of more obscure album cuts, they are very hard to find and sometimes you just have to give up and move on to something else. Please let me compliment you on your diplomacy efforts, whether it works or not is up to the guy who's complaining.....................Keep On My Friend.................Tim (justasinger54)

Re: Too many songs getting removed.

Dear chordie.com,

Yes, you're a family man, you have to watch out so the "man" doesn't get you and take away your nice car. I guess I'm just a little wild and I need someone who will stick up for me when the chips are down. Why are you such an apologist for s*******y scare tactics from mega corporations who don't even have a leg to stand on? Is your nice house and your nice car so important that you'll let them whittle you away until you're just a collection of old folks songs that noone wants to play anymore? Not that folks songs aren't wonderful and amazing, I need modern songs too, ones that people know the words to. Don't pat yourself on the back for being a conformist, and congratulate yourself for being "better than nothing". Yes, I know I can take it or leave it, and that's what I'm doing.

I never seen anybody get banned on chordie before. He had it coming. He can say Chordie should do this and Chordie shouldnt do that. The bottom line is, he's not the one who'll get sued. I still love this site

not many get banned but a few have. Most people respect the site and others but sadly you get the odd one or two that think they are above everyone and think they can say what they like. Well they can say what they like as long as they respect the rules. If they cannot respect a few simple rules after a warning then a ban is what happens.
