Topic: Is there a difference?

My Grandaughter is starting to take Violin lessons at school, and the other night she asked me

a question which I have never consdered before.  Is there a difference between a Violin and

a Fiddle.  Any answers would be welcome.

Re: Is there a difference?

Hi Headcase  Someone said the difference between a violin and a fiddle is about $5,000 wink

Sum set up fiddles a little different I belive but the real parting of the ways
is in the type of music played ... I can't play one so what the hell do I know.

Why do kids ask these things ... smile

Re: Is there a difference?

I always heard the difference was what you wear.

If you play in a suit and tie, it's a violin. Bluejeans it's a fiddle.

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

Re: Is there a difference?

I am sure this got asked before??? maybe not???

anyway, I asked the same question to a fiddle/violin player. She said the difference was the way it was played. i.e irish, hillbilly etc is fiddle and classical and orchestra etc is violin.
seemed like a good enough answer to me

Re: Is there a difference?

The best definition I think I've ever seen of the differences between a Violin and Fiddle (I even think I read it here), was:

A Violin is usually carried in a case.... a Fiddle is usually carried in a gunny sack.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.
