Topic: Your most disappointing guitar...

We always talk about the best sounding or best value out there... I know that everyone has personal prefrences, but what is the most disappointing guitar you have bought or played? The one that you expected so much more from...

For me it was the Martin D18s. I've owned 2 of these and both were mediocre IMO... Maybe I had just heard so much hype that I expected too much, but they did not impress me. I have a '64 Martin baritone uke and love it but the guitars (D18 specifically)you can keep. Some of their other guitars are fine but most I find are overated/overpriced IMO... What's yours?

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Dean Exotica. 100% junk. Looked real pretty( I  received tons of compliments on how pretty it looked) but the electronics seemed to be assembled and/or installed underwater. Worked for approximately 1 week then the problems began. Returned it 3 times then finally the music store felt my my frustation and gave me a full refund. Dean guitars need to put more emphasis on the inside of the guitars and less on the fancy paint jobs and glossy finishes, in my humble opinion.................

Give everything but up.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Probably Silvertone for me.  That was my first guitar and I loved it, until I heard better ones.  I just bought a Martin Custom D and I love it.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Ohhhh I had forgotten about Deans. I too had bad experiences with them. About 2 years ago I bought a Dean Traditon acoustic because of a deal ($100 figured it'd be an okay beater).  At least I thought it was a deal at the time... Got it home set it up changed strings and the tone was horrible. After a month the neck started twisting as well... I ended up using it as a learning tool for finishing and some other luthier work.   You'd think I'd learned my lesson on Dean acoustics from that, but about a year ago I was shopping for a cheap acoustic bass for campfire jamming and picked up a Dean Playmate bass... I had the same problem as Toney. The electronics where trash! The neck was no where near straight! It had humps here and there and buzzes everywhere else. Gave it to a friend, More like made him take it smile

Had a Harmony guitar once. That was pretty bad. Also had a Samick guitar that was so bad I threw it away

I have a friend that has a Harmony. Compared to anything I've played it's like trying to play chords on a log.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Hey Guys ,
I had a Harmony Rocket (335 copy ) at one time years ago and that ax was sweeeet ... Don't know what possesed me to sell it ...
I love Guild guitars , I have three and in '99 I decided to buy a brand new Guild F65CE ... Top of the line accoustic electric , this guitar is loaded , fishman dual source preamp and electronics ... Enough mother of pearl and abalone inlays to put the species on the endangered list , plays like a million bucks and ever since the first time I played it at a jam , I have been unhappy with the sound of the thing ... Now I just avoid playing it and it's a shame ...
People always tell me how pretty it is , and I know that tone is very subjective but it's just not what my other Guilds are ........

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

I was in a Sam Ash years ago and saw a guitar on clearance for no lie...13 dollars. It was a Carlo Robelli... well worth the money for a guitar that cheap, but you know what it was. A piece of garbage. I still have it though.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

The worst guitar i've owned is an Ibanez Ak95 Hollowbody. It had an awful tone that i could do anything with. Then just before i sold it some of the beautiful abalone detailing that caused me to buy it to begin with started coming off. Then of course i had to repair it so i could sell it. I'm glad to be rid of it. The thing that still gets me is i turned down some really good guitars in order to get that one. Researching your instrument and playing it first really pays off. I'll never buy for looks again.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

I've had a few actually ... I wanted to try semi-hollows for the first time and played the Epiphone Dot and LOVED it ... so I figured the Ibanez semi-hollow series would sound just as good if not better ... it proved the opposite ... the tone was horrible and now matter what series I tried, I could not get a decent tone out of it ... I'm not sure if it was the pickups or what ... the second was a Takamine Acoustic ... at first I loved the sound but after I bought it (go figure) and I took it home I couldn't get a decent sound out of it ... oddly enough I had a crappy Yamaha that was $100 and it sounded a lot better than my $499 Takimine sounded

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Definitely my first electric guitar.
The First Act ME-40. My wife got it for my 30th birthday and I know she had the best of intentions.
She just didn't have any guitar knowledge.
I still have it, it was the guitar that inspired me to get better...hehe.
Because no matter how well I got, that guitar just always sounded and played like junk.
But for a walmart brand guitar, what more could you expect.
It's a toy...literally.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

My sweet wife bought me a F-hole Harmony for $50 new back in the day. It was enough to get me started.
I was playing a gig with a mid - 70's Yamaha dreadnought when a bar customer walked up with his Martin D - 18 he was so proud of.
The Martin was heavy and had a "G" string the rang out louder than the other 5. He was hurt when I handed it back to him after two songs. He assumed I'd be thrilled to play it all night long.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

For me is was a Washburn A-5.

As a young teenager it was my first purchase of a brand new guitar. It was black, sexy, kind of a chopped off Explorer kind of look. Unfortunately, the music store I had to deal with was run by this wanna-be-rock-star that could not leave anyone alone when they picked up a guitar in his store... It was a chance for him to show off his chops.

So between listening to him play it, or having him pull up a stool next to me and wanting to jam, I never really got the time to ~listen~ to the guitar properly.

It was a so-so instrument. Nice neck, but the sound was wooden and dull, and the light body lent itself perfectly to howling feedback. Then again, I developed excellent volume control technique because I had to dial the knob down the moment I stopped playing. LOL

Finally sold it and got a Kramer, which I loved.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

For me the worst would have to be a Fender MIM 60's Reissue Strat in Lake Placid Blue. The neck and body were fine but the bridge was unable to be internotated even somewhere near acceptable.

After "working" with the store and Fender for 14 months, Fender took the guitar away to fix it. 6 months later the guitar was returned with the note I had written to the techs still slotted through the strings just as they had received it. I dont even think it was opened and there was no work done on it.

I was told a new neck and bridge had been put on the body, but questioned why the serial number was still the same on the neck and the scratch on the back of the bridge was in exactly the same spot as the old one. I was told the guitar was fine and advised that it was my playing style that made the internotation be so woeful.

Lucky for me the owner of the store played the guitar and noticed things just weren't right with the guitar and replaced it with a new Fender USA Deluxe model after he learned of the events surrounding my guitar. I would never buy a MIM Fender again.

The good news is my new guitar is 100%.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Kid next door came by and heard me play. Said he had a guitar. I told him to go get it.
He comes back with a First Act guitar shaped object his mom got him at Walmart. Worst cardboard-like piece of junk I ever saw.
I put some old light gauge strings on it for him so he could strum in tune for a bit. He can't even play one chord.
I think he broke it over his sister's head.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

LMAO!!!
Tubatooter's story jogged a memory that I am almost ashamed to tell, but I've got to.

My first electric guitar (and believe me, I use the term loosely) was some no-name thing from Service Merchandise that my Dad bought me. I swear, it would make the First Act stuff look pro by comparison!

But I was really young, and I could play a couple songs (enough that it impressed the girls), so I thought I'd be cool and bring my axe to school in my very stylish ~vinyl~ gig bag.

I was doing OK until about halfway though the day when a couple older kids (that owned real guitars and were in a band) caught sight of me.

To their credit they didn't bash me directly, and we talked a while about playing and amps. But I could tell they were trying not to laugh. They left after a bit, and when they though they were out of earshot around the corner I heard them all bust out laughing and talking about what a cheesy piece of junk I had.

I could have crawled under a rock, and immediately took pains to hide my guitar that I was so proud of that morning.

I started saving up that day to buy a real guitar. I think that one died in a horrible carpentry accident, as I recall...

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

for me it is a fender f3
i got it second hand off my grandad, not bad condition but i hate the sound of it so i went back to playing a 40 quid piece of junk that sounds awesome, dont laught, im serious
its amazing that a terrible guitar can sdound amazing as long as it feels right

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Hi everyone, this is my first post.

for me the worst gutar was also a cheap one, I guess you get what you pay for, It was an accustic, Brand was "Magnum"
It looked good, and I bought it wanting to take up guitar. But I knew nothing, was a real bad choice, apart from the terrible sound from the ply top, it was difficult to play, Strings always felt to hard and seemed to far away from the fret board made it very difficult to play,

I replaved it with another cheap range guitar, A Greg Bennett D5. I still playing the D5 I love it. Best $300.00 I ever spent, I have an Australian Made Maton that is better finished that the D5 but is by no means a better guitar in my opinion

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Three years ago happened to get my hands on an Epiphone Casino.... poorly balanced, wouldn't sustain long enough for a pull-off, shallow sounding POS on a Stick!  Sent it back and replaced it with a Epi Dot neck through semi-hollow.... one of the nicest playing and sounding archtops I've had the pleasure of plucking.  With the possible exception of the 1943 Austrian built "F" hole acoustic I got a hold of this weekend.  Built by someone I've never heard of and can't pronounce, "ridden hard and put away wet" but sweet tone and tons of volume!  Needs restoration badly by someone with music in their soul and money to burn.  One of which I don't have .....

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

I was disapointed when I first tried a godin, it sounded cool but the strings felt really spikey under my finge tips and I just didn't get it at all, walked away with my freaking awesome danelectro instead, I was also disapointed when I tried out a prs soapbar.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

I talked my parents into buying a Synsonic (Spelling???) headless guitar. The thing would not stay in tune and the tremalo felt like it was made out of a match box car.
I ended up smashing it over a Radio Shack guitar amp (junk as wel) that was given to me.

one word: bridgecraft.

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

Adopted a Fender Acoustic and was extremely disappointed with it, cant remember the model now but passd it on fairly rapidly.

Have had a Yamaha FG340 for 28 years and sounds sweeter by the day, never goes out of tune, and my latest pride and joy is a Gibson SJ200 TV.......what a pleasure to play

Re: Your most disappointing guitar...

I had a Dean Flying Z(The fur covered guitars ZZ Top used) I thought it would be great as it had a tremolo and locking nut. After a few dive bombs the strings(particularly the G through the high E) would snap at the nut. The humbuckers were more hum than bucker and this thing had no sustain at all. I kept it about 6 months and traded it on a Aria PE-R80(Les Paul copy). I loved that guitar, unfortunatly it was killed in a automobile accident(but thats another story)
