Topic: "The Heathens Are Here"

This one sort of formed in my mind as I was doing some yardwork on this beautiful Easter day.  I realize that I have taken very broad poetic license with the facts of history, but hey - it's a song, not a bloody textbook!

The Heathens Are HereJames McCormick, April 8, 2007

In 6/8 time, an end-of-empire waltz

Just [G]pass me my fiddle, I'll [C]rosin my [G]bow

You [G]don't have to tell me what I already [D]know

[G]Scream bloody murder and [C]hunker down [G]low

The [G]heathens are here, they're [D]runnin' the [G]show

. . .

[C]Grab some provisions, take [G]just what you'll use

Some [G]food and a weapon and [D]sensible shoes

[G]Head for the hills and [C]sound the a-[G]larm

The [G]heathens are here, they're [D]heavily [G]armed

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire it's [G]been really [D]sweet

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

We [G]conquered their land, en-[C]slaved them with [G]trade

[G]Won hearts and minds at the tip of a [D]blade

[G]Made them an offer they [C]could not re-[G]fuse

The [G]heathens are here, they [D]are not a-[G]mused

. . .

[C]Life was so simple when [G]we were on top

The [G]milk and the honey just [D]never did stop

Ex-[G]ploiting our neighbors just [C]made so much [G]sense

The [G]heathens are here, they're a [D]little bit [G]tense

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire the [G]end is com-[D]plete

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

[G]Might just makes right, that's [C]been our mot-[G]to

We [G]made them agree where e'er we did [D]go

We [G]took their resources, their [C]primitive [G]bliss

The [G]heathens are here, I [D]think they are [G]pissed

. . .

So just [C]pass me my fiddle, I'll [G]rosin my bow

You [G]don't have to tell me what I already [D]know

I'm [G]not really sure what [C]I'm gonna [G]do

The [G]heathens are here, I [D]think we are [G]screwed

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire this [G]is our de-[D]feat

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

Re: "The Heathens Are Here"

Speaking as an old western NC boy, that was purty! It also got me a litte bit homesick. Great song that had my toe tapping. I think I added a little yeehaw to the lyric a time or two as well.

Re: "The Heathens Are Here"

Glad you like it, Jeff.  I have been having lots of fun lately with simple waltz forms - for some reason, the lyrical meter is just stuck in my head.

Maybe I should worry about getting stuck in a creative rut doing so many waltz-timed songs.  But I'm having too much fun to be concerned.

So much stuff is in 4/4 anyway . . . I'll just be a rebel and enjoy my waltz phase while it lasts.  James

Re: "The Heathens Are Here"

Hi James,

Another great waltz from you, and a bit more upbeat than usual. As Badeye had already said it flows very well and I enjoyed playing it. Who cares about history if the song is good?

Thank you,

Roger
