Re: sad songs?

righton, daddycool.  Jim Reeves has tons of sad love songs.  And I love the old country tunes. And we can't forget Don Williams.
Here are a few more that I like.

I Wish I Were Blind      Bruce Sprinsteen
Book of Dreams          Bruce Springsteen
If I Should Fall Behind  Bruce Springsteen
Sea of Heartbreak       Don Gibson
You're Only Lonely      JD Souther

Anything and everything by Leonard Cohen. Just don't overdose on him tho', otherwise you could land up feeling worse that what you are now.
When a Man Loves a Woman   by  Percy Sludge.
Also try writing your own song. It might be very therapeutic, and also help you to see things in perspective. Hopefully some of this info will help.

EPIC!!!

Re: sad songs?

I'm with the happy songs poster.  I like the Proclaimers song "Over and Done With" from the Bottle Rocket soundtrack.  It's a classic.  Also, better figure out how to play or fake the F and Bm chords.  They're essential to pretty much half the lexicon.

Re: sad songs?

I'm still a big time beginner, and there was this ONE song that I wanted to play that had an F in it so I found this.  While this may not always work to give the "right" sound, it has helped me a few times... try this version of the F:

and have fun playing!

Don't overdose on the sad songs... how about "You are my Sunshine" ... it's sad, but not toooo sad
here:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/?url= … anspose=-2

you'll see it's transposed to -2 semitones to allow for simple chords... no capo necessary, just play and sing babe... check out my webiste link (below my name) to hear my 4 year old daughter and I singing it (and it's being played with that -2 semitones) - nothing too special, but it's there and not too bad for a newbie to play!  If I can do it, anyone probably can!  wink

Re: sad songs?

Also, have you tried the barre chords for F and Bm? If you gonna sing da blues you gonna hafta lern 'em. Best way to learn them is playing a song you like.

Re: sad songs?

That is the F I have been using for 40 years.  It works fine.

Re: sad songs?

Can't go wrong with Hank Williams right?
I Can't Hep It If I'm Still In Love With You... Willie Nelson has a lovely version in F, which you can capo at the third fret and play D, A and G shapes big_smile
Hope that helps,

^ just watched the Vid mekidsmom. Stephie is a natural, keep at it!

BTW - I think I was raised fairly close to where you live. I grew up outside of Kingston (Hurley). Love the Catskills, it's beautiful country up there.

Tks!  She LOVES being in front of the camera and on stage.  Yeah, I'm a bit North-West of Hurley... between Syracuse and Utica... but in a nice little small town with a lovely small lake within walking distance.  The leaves are beautiful right now... but winter is going to be rough this year!  I'd rather be in NC!  We have family down there and have considered more than once getting out of the cold (and taxes)!

Katie567 -- any of these suggestions what you were looking for?  I really hope you try that F too... it has changed my perception of the "dreaded F" ... plus, you can get away without fretting that first string on some songs, or just deaden it if you can't quite fret it yet!

Re: sad songs?

"Your wildest dreams" by Moody Blues is a good one, so is Carly Simon's "Thats the wya I always heard it should be"...keep on...justasinger54

Re: sad songs?

Same as with a d.  you are only fretting three fingers and you learn to strum or pick just the bottom 3 or 4 strings when you play.  Em, you only strum the top set of strings.
justasinger54, I just learned your wildest dreams 6 or more months ago.  it ends up being a pretty simple song to strum and play.  i love the Moody blues.  Always have.
