Topic: Looking for points of view

There was a topic started about humidifiers and after my reply the string just stopped. Yet I was very curious about how others felt about it. We seem to live in a world where manufactuers create needs for us and sell us the idea that their product is a life saver that we cannot live without or the world will end , our hair will fall out, our guitar will turn to dust, pigs will fly....well you get the point. so here is a copy of my reply. I would love to hear from others on this point.

<font color="red">O.K. so here's the deal as an "old timer" sees it. I play a Norman B20 with a spruce top and cherry sides and back. I have owned this guitar for 15 years.I try to practice about an hour a day,so it does get plenty of playing. I keep it in a solid case with a little silica bag to absorbe moisture. I clean my strings and fingerboard with "Fast Fret", I pass a dry rag on it to dust it off every so often. And that's it! My guitar keeps sounding better as the years pass. It is ageing just as I like.

My concern is this. I am fairly new to this site.... I really love this site and the interaction with other musicians.... but I can't help feeling that many people are spending so much time fretting ( pun intended ) over all the latest equipment that <b>manufactuers</b>  are telling us that we need. Unless you live in a very dry or extreemly humid enviroment I do not see the need for such a gadget. Also if you do live in such an enviroment wouldn't your home already have either a humidifier or dehumidifier. Doesn't your guitar share the same enviroment? I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Our tempuratures vary from +30 and very humid in the summers to -30 and very dry in the winters.I have never felt a need to worry about my guitar.

So are all these gadgets nessesary or are we products of our <b>commercial enviroment</b>?</font>

Re: Looking for points of view

I think you are right on. Extreme climate calls for extra care. Otherwise good habbits are probably enough.

Re: Looking for points of view

Up until very recently I had an old Fender acoustic. I'd had it for nearly 20 years and about three quarters of that time it sat in it's soft case(bag) getting ignored. I pulled it out about a year and a half ago and fell in love all over again. It still sounded great and after a string change, even better. I have taken no special care of this fine instrument, in fact I have abused it by ignoring it, and it still sounds great.

After receiving a new guitar for my 40th birthday, one of my mates bugged me so much that I gave it to him so that he can learn too. I hope he has as much enjoyment as me.

No. I don't think we need these things. The best thing about acoustic guitar is that you can take it anywhere. Why drag all that other stuff along too? No need.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Looking for points of view

Right On. Nice to know. I have a fender acoustic and plan to keep her a long time. I keep her on a stand because I pick her up everyday. No humidifer, no problems yet.Tempatures here go from minas -25 in winter to plus 25-30 in summer.I call her Etta. After the great blues singer Etta James.

That could be a Thread."What do you call your guitar" LOL.

Have a good day....Badeye.

Good one, Badeye. My daughter christened my new Yamaha - Lara (the guitara). Don't ask!

I'm a big Lara Croft fan and my guitar is wayyyy sexier than Lady Croft.

She's only been down to my mates house, so that I can show him the ropes. Good fun.

Thing is, in most of the houses I go to parties, there's already a guitar knocking about. Needless to say I do tend to get talked into a wee sing song.

But it's our house for the booz up and sing-a-long next.

OUT SHE COMES! In all her naked glory!!

Nice one,mhebert.
