I'd definately agree with Beamer, if you have multi effects go the tube route, once you've used a tube amp I doubt you'll go back! My recommendation would be a Blackstar HT5, more than enough for a basement http://www.blackstaramps.co.uk/products/ht-5r/

But try as many as you can

Jerry

I just checked that out! Man the mini stack is the schiznizzel.  Where was that stuff when I was 16?????  The combo is kick butt also,,,,,, I will say that the Bugera was only around 140 when I got it.  It was brand new on a special deal.  Its now 190 and only has a 8 in speaker.   OH but the 8 incher can get it going!

I need to get an external cab for it, a 12 would open it up even more.  Iwas thinking of wireing it inline to my GMX112.  It has the speaker out jack but they warn only to use audio cable and not a guitar cable.  Any thoughts on this? (sorry sorta hijacked thread.)

i would recommend staying away from modeling amps if you can. The reason? I have a Fender Mustang my wife bought me for Xmas. I asked for an Acoustic Brand 30 watt and a multi-effects pedal or a Wah.

I use my Mustang but I should have returned it. I feel that it does not make a "true" sound. It supposedly models 8 amps with many, many effects that you can use. The problem is there is no way to find a clean amp model. All of the settings seem to have one or more effects along with the model or setting you choose.

I would rather have a regular two channel amp, a wah or multi-effects with a wah, and fiddle with the treble, bass, and gain to produce my sounds.

That is true about modeling amps. When I get the urge to try a new effect, I can use the modeling amp to see if it is necessary. It seems to make every sound EXCEPT a guitar plugged into an amp.No matter what I do,there is always an echo when I stop playing

I have not used my http://www.behringer.com/assets/GMX112_ … ont_XL.jpg since I got my Bugera V5.  The 112 has been discontinued but they have the 212.  same amp 2 speakers.  Point being, with out the midi foot controler, you get to use one preset at a time on either channel.  And the "tube simulator" for the "low watt overdriven tubes" is just like J3 says.

W/ this and even with my RP, I find a good clean and then uses some stomps to get somethingdiff.  one good thing is that this amp comes with a foot pedal for channel switch and effects on or off.

I’ve been learning the guitar I was loaned (acoustic classical) for about a year now. By now I’m pretty sure I’ve finally cemented all the bad habits I’ve developed from lack of instruction. I strum/pick chords/notes with my thumb while my pinky/ring are braced on the body. There is too much real-estate on the neck to finger those pure and fat F and B bar codes so I play alternatives that sound close enough to my ear.

I’m buying an electric and researching some hollow-bodies, sniffing around the Epiphone Dot. But I don’t like the skinny necks, and I can’t find any electrics that have the classical-size.  I was considering an electric-classical, but that’s nothing more than a louder version of the guitar I already have. Redundant.

Maybe there is a question in those paragraphs.

I might be wrong, but my SG has a pretty wide neck. go check out a Epiphone G400.  I know its fatter than a strat or a tele.

Jerome,

Thanks for the tip.  With out useing a dist box, you think  a compressor maxed out for output and attack would drive it?  This thing (Johnson) only has one channel and a knob for dist.  http://www.johnsongtr.com/jat15r.html  honelstly  have been trying to get a really good crunch for my kid on this,  still twiddling.

If your wanting to spend 300, I would look into  TUBE POWER.

The standard answer here is " Go to the store and play with all of them."

How much more sound do you want?  I cant remember but does the cube have an external speaker jack?  You could just pipe it into a 10 or 12 in speaker.  That amp is designed for low level playing and pratice.  If you want to play with a drummer,, Im thinkning at least a 15 to 30 watt amp.  I held my own back ing the day with a little Marshall lead 12 amp.

A 5 watt tube amp = around 30 watts of solid state.  If you have a multi effects, you really dont need a modeling amp,  if its economy time,, look into Berhinger, or Bugera  http://www.bugera-amps.com/EN/products/V5.aspx  I have this one and a 65 Watt berhinger 2 channel (both the same company)    Go play in the store and get what makes you feel good.

Peace

Hi M.B.
With todays musical technology it possible get mostly any modern guitar with the appropriate  FX to sound like anything you want sound wise.
Purist would disagree but in general this true of all electronic generated music.
Un-FX guitars are all total different in sound and looks and all guitarist have there favorites so I guess it will always matter whether Gretsch White Falcon or a Fender Stratocaster is being played.
ark

So the kind of sound you want is definitely influenced by the guitar and amps you use, and if a musician chooses he or she can either let the inherent sound of the instrument and equipment come out, or alter it through FX.

Exactly and very well said may I add.  Tell us a little of what type of music you play the most of.  You can start small and get bigger as you go.  you can get clones of the big names, and they can be just as good for starters.

As has been noted, listen to you tube  and see what  the artist you like are playing.  Amps and pick ups DEFINATLY have to do with your sound.  Solid state amps are usually less expensive  than Tube (Valve) amps.

There are also what is called Hybird amps, though there is some debate on  them too,  I bought a 15 watt Johnson amp for my son.  It has a tube pre amp and a solid state power amp.  The debate is if it should be the other way around??? I dunno, but teh johnson is a kicking little amp.  up untill this last year all I had was solid state.

If your into heavy music, its almost always gonna be a humbucker.  either traditional or stacked (used in strats when you want to keep the 3 single look), Hendrix and Clapton, single coil strat.  Springsteen, Tele,  Tom petty just about everything LOLOL but he favors Rickenbacker (semi solid) Strats, and Tele.  He even uses an SG sometimes.  However Single coils are used almost as much in heavy stuff.

Amp wise, its a gluttons choice. Marshall has a big hand in Heavy metal , but then there is the Mesa amps , HiWatt, Laney and recently lots of Butique amps.  You have Peavy and Bugera, Line 6 and Berhinger to also choose from just for starters.

Yep its a CANDY store from he!! LOLOLOL.

So it is all up to YOUR ears. and whats right for you.  If you have a regular music store where they know you,,, spen 3 or 4 weekends there just playing different amps and guitars.

NOw this is totally my opinion, Try to find a smaller independant store who cares about the customer.  Guitar Center is good for deals and finding tons of differnt toys, but they want the sale first and foremost.  Smaller places that you feel comfortable in will be interested in you first and finding you the best for you.  They want your money, but I find that getting to know teh employees, makes it soooo much nicer.

OK off my soapbox.

P.S.  Il ove my acoustics and my electrics!  I also have a acustic pick up I put in my guitars and run into my effects.  Its nice to get some reverb and chorus for it.

Peace!

LOLOLOLOL Ya but you can really get some wild feedback with a acoustic and a 100 Watt Stack.

LOLOLOLOL It was FUN, the store was probably glad I was in the sound proof room.

Good for you Jx3!  You've set a good example not only for the trout, but also for the other band members.  Giving some respect will often auto earn you respect as well.  If they think of steppnig on YOUR  toes in the future, they will likely think TWICE about it because of your actions this time around.

Well Amy, that only works if the one in question actually cares about his companions.  But as it is said, If it applies to you take heed, if not, let it float down the river. :-)

It is an old malady. LSD,  =  Lead Singer disease. happens a lot from what I hear.

Joey maybe its time you and Bass playing friend look for a new singer?  Or did I understand that you 3 have worked out the problem and all is good again?

I do know there is a Mod for teh VHT amps to put one in.  I did not want to mess with it so I got the V5.

or you can just tighten the screws that hold the springsplate so that the tension is very tight.  I did that to my sons along with adding 2 more springs.

I bought a strat knockoff kit, but it was missing the electronics- and other stuff I used to refurbish a genuine 79 Strat that I also own.  ANYWAY the kit guitar need a few things, like paint for the body, so I sprayed it with the lefto er green silver flake motorcycle paint that I had from a restoration of a 1970 Yamaha CS3C and then gave it a new set of electronics-I upgraded to a HSH system that I bought on ebay.  Will let everyone know what the results are from this imported pickguard and HSH pickups.  Still need a few things -like a fixed bridge-I never can get a standard strat to stay in tune despite using heavy springs so fixed bridges for me.  Will let everyone know what the outcome is from the imported electronics as soon as I get the funds together for the bridge system.

Hey check this vid out for keeping teh strat in tune.

Awesome! But I don't have an effects loop. So I still have to crank it to get tube saturation. Love the Fulltone stuff and the Visual sound.

See if you can add an attenuator.  That is one thing I really love about my Bugera V5. you can select .1 .3 or 5 watts.  crank the gain to 10 and the master to 1.5 with it on .1 and you got full tubes smoking :-)

Yup, like Zurf said, if you can use whatever mic you have as a computer mic - skype will probably be able to recognize it.  I had my zoom H2 hooked up before, but for some reason it didn't want to work last night.  I'm going to try it again on Sunday.

It IS possible some of the folks on the other side of the pond may be awake at that time wink

I dont have skype, but am looking into it. I will need to get a webcam.  does it have to have the integrated mic, or will running my recording mike in as a seperate work?  I work nights m-fri,  I get home at 130 AM Central time.

most pros , from what I see on documentrys have the music first then listen to it and fill in the words.  I however seem to be a word guy first so I get the feel of where the music needs to go.

If you watch you tube, go to the mettalica some kind ov monster doc. you can skip the first 3 or 4 parts and get the stuff where they are in the studio.  they lay down riffs and then sit around and write the words.  oh herei it is,, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXofbkCE … ure=relmfu    at 3:16
