I have a old Silvertone bass I picked up used for $50 that I had to fix one of the pickups and wiring before it would work but the strings are really high on the neck and very uncomfortable to play I looked at the saddle and they were adjusted as low as the little Allen wrench sockets could go then I got an idea if I messed it up I could always pickup another cheap bass for my needs so I removed the strings and neck and traced a pattern around the bridge and removed it then got my dremel router and cut around the marked off area about a 1/4" deep and with an old screwdriver and hammer proceeded to chisel out the entire area till it was level it took awhile but soon I replaced the bridge screws,neck and adjusted the individual string nuts all the way up to start after I restrung and tuned it I had to make further adjustments but now the strings are only 1/8" or less off the fretboard and it stays in tune and is wicked fast and more important comfortable to pick sometimes things do work out for the best now I have a nice bass to play and my fingers sure appreciate it smile

I have played this song many times as I recall it was done in the key of E major because of the alternating bass line being picked the chords in E are E A and B if you hold the E chord and pick the low E string open on 1 then strum the chord (and) the next note is a B (2) played on the A string second fret then strum the chord (and) 3 is the E note again strum the chord (and) pick the B note again on the second fret A string this pattern is what Johnny Cash is noted for 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and or another way to describe it is pick strum pick strum alternating between the 6th string and the 5th string this is a simplified explanation it feels more like I and ah 2 and ah 3 and ah 4 and ah but not till you have the timing right I would watch a video and pay attention to his lead guitar player to see how he alternates the picking smile

Jerome what about the lead singer from Nazareth or Joe Perry a lot more then 1% talent in my H.O. awesome vocals but there is truth in having confidence in ones own ability with regards to improving yourself I can agree with you on that smile

Thanks Amy the age of electronics is a marvel converting the recorded signals to bits and beaming them to a satellite and reassembling them on the other side of the world sounds like star trek there are some advantages to living in the 21st century are you making progress with your project it takes time to get started I know till all the wrinkles are smoothed out smile

I played this one thru before , you had it on your website. Thought I would give it a try and see how playing would compare to yours. This song plays well with an acoustic too.

if you dont know how to strum that way its because your not familar with timing theres nothing hard to it just up tempo 16th note chords what I mean by that is count
1234= quarter beats
1&2&3&4 =eights count 1and 2 and 3 and 4 and
1e&ah2e&ah3e&ah4e=16th 1e and ah 2e and ah 3e and ah 4e and ah  just start slow and keep the meter even then speed up to warp 9

I saw a video and he plays the song in G not E so slap a capo on the 3rd fret if you feel like singing it higher otherwise play it in E as discribed above the fingering is the same with a capo on this is the easiest way not the best but at least it will sound close
