Your pinky is a finger.  Get it strong and make it work.

EDIT TO ADD: I went and played a song where I have to do that progression and paid attention to how I do it (a rare thing for me).  I cheat.  I use my pinky to get the C#, but I move my middle finger over from the D string second fret to the A string second fret to get the B, which leaves the D string open.  You can make a bit of a tangle of your fingers and put your pinky on the second fret of the D string if you really, really want to avoid playing a "wrong" chord in the progression.  It wouldn't bother me, and I sure wouldn't put you into messed up D chord jail if you did it.  And I guarantee you, unless you are auditioning for Julliard or Peabody, no one will notice and if they do notice they wouldn't care because it would mean that they do the same darned thing.

We have all missed the boat and MKM has shown us the way.  We're all looking for interesting insight to natural or manmade history, but MKM picks when they had the best parties.  That's some clear-headed thinking right there.

Weird.  I've been playing straight through, at least a little bit per day.  But owie.

I blame the ants.  Plus, I'm sure Roger Guppy and Russell Harding have something to do with it.  I'm not sure what yet.  Or how.  But just because there's no reason doesn't mean I can't blame them.  And the ants.

Two weeks ago, I watched my uncle die.  I was glad that I could be there with my sister and cousin.  Uncle Bob had no children of his own.  It doesn't sound sappy at all to me.

I'd play that with my first three on the A and move the C# to B to open A using my pinky.  Or cheat.  Do it fast and no one will know.

I've been working on a new (to me) song.  An acoustic version of "Magic Carpet Ride".  I think it sounds pretty good, but I'm eager to hear other's opinions to see whether it works for other ears than mine.

That bass line in the song that all bassists learn in early sessions (and I have since forgotten), it's even dubbed the "Green Onions feel", Duck Dunne created that.  You hear it everywhere in soul and blues.

It's super-busy at work right now, but I will make time for a jam this week on any day but Saturday.

Awww.  If you ask me, he's among the best rock, soul, and blues bassists that's ever been.  Plus he looked like somebody's uncle with his pipes and cardigans on stage.  I only saw him live once, when he was playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.  Neil Young and Steven Stills played so hard that David Crosby gave up, grabbed a stool from the acoustic set, turned his back to the audience and watched the show.  Graham Nash was playing along, but only playing chords on the keyboard.  No riffs or solos.  But Duck Dunne, he was right in the mix and rocking hard.  The best.  The absolute best.

I lost my mother suddenly the Wednesday after mother's day in 1996.  All us kids were glad that we had called her on that day and that the last words she heard from all four of her children were "I love you."

My wife is not big on this holiday, just as I am not big on father's day.  A card and a beer, and I'm good.  My wife is getting some work done on the house (by me) and that's her present.  I'd have done it anyway, but it's costing money, so that's where her present went.

Maybe later I'll play Close Enough to Perfect For Me for her.  Though she usually interrupts me with some inane comment while I'm playing.  And then wonders why the kids think it's OK to interrupt people when they're concentrating on something.

If I had $6500 to spend on guitars, I'd have a heck of a fly fishing raft and trailer instead.

It's nice that we live in a world where there's people with enough money to buy such wonderful instruments, because that way there's people willing to make them.

Amazing designer.  "There is no replacement for displacement."  Then proving himself wrong, he went about finding some.  Innovator, designer, enthusiast.

Just to see?  Not worth it.   I see some future person's history every day.

But given the opportunity, I'd go back to the early 17th century and fish rivers that had never seen a lure.  When the folks from the Jamestown settlement used the Discovery to explore Chesapeake Bay and James River to the fall line (which is now at Richmond), the captain's log of the Discovery recorded catching a catfish from the James River that provided a feast for the entire crew.  Imagine that on a rod and reel!

Edit to add: I also read stories of exploration of what became known as the Cheat River valley in western Maryland.  The cartographers were also fishermen.  They reported catching over 200 trout per day dappling flies from willow branches.  Imagine fishing rivers where the fish had never seen an artificial fly.  Oh sure, there'd be cougars and wolves to concern yourself with.  That's why I'd take a hunter with me...

I came down to see who is on.  Turns out it's no one, but there's a few people hanging around Skype waiting for something to happen, I guess.  I may call one of you, or more if we don't mind losing video.  I'll come back and see what you're up to, as I still have a couple hours of studying to do tonight.

There's a fair number at Staples, Newegg, and Amazon when I checked.

I have no connection with any of those firms.  I've never even used Newegg, but I know they have some good prices on stuff.

There was kissing and love and stuff in The Hulk.  There was lust in Iron Man, but action upon it was limited by the PG-13 rating.  And Thor, well, as a former hobbyist researcher of Norse mythology (I taught myself to read old Norse language so that I could get access to some reproductions of 14th century texts - if that's serious enough for you), I had some problems with it.  It's too cool to be atheist to allow even an ancient unpracticed religion to get air time I guess.

Good for you.  Now back to playing.

I would like to, but it's hard to say.

I'm in training all this week.  In fact, I'm taking a quick break now on some homework then have to get back at it for another hour or two.  In addition, it's a long commute before and after.  Between eight hours of class, long commutes each way, and homework, plus of course having to deal with the usual "urgent" work e-mails and stuff, I'm guessing that my week is pretty much shot.

I'll be thrilled to pop on late and leave early to make up for it if there's the chance, though.

Well, bruises and such it is RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.   If it's a throbbing kind of pain, I bet elevation will help.  Sit down or lay down and put your hand in a comfortable position higher than your heart.  General soreness I think is best relieved by Tylenol, which is more of a pain blocker than anything.  It tricks your body into not feeling the pain.  If it's swelling that's causing the pain, then both elevation and some ibuprofen, and maybe some ice too.

I hope you get to feeling better quickly.

That finger that I smashed a few months ago is still kind of numb.  I don't think it's ever going to be sensitive again, so I'm learning to compensate by paying attention to the pressure on a pick against my thumb instead of against my finger's knuckle like I used to.  The nail is getting ready to fall off, but there's a new one growing under it already, so I think it'll be OK.  These sorts of inconveniences let us know that we're alive.

Hi.  It's getting closer so I need a fairly good head count of who thinks they'll be able to make it, including children and spouses.

If you're 50% sure or better, let me know.

Here's who's said they'd be likely to come.  There have been some additional that said they'd like to come but weren't sure.  I didn't add them.  You're still welcome, of course, just tell me here that you're more likely than not so I can be sure to have enough space reserved.

Thanks.

Edit to add dates and location:  Thursday, June 14 through Sunday, June 17.  Low-water Bridge Campground in Bentonville, VA.  If you call them, be sure to tell them you're in Derek Zurfluh's group to get the group rate of $8/night/person.

Welcome to Chordie, and congratulations on rediscovering guitar and making music.

Everyone has pain when they first start again, but if you've got some kind of a growth more than a run-of-the-mill callous then that's something different.  I hope it clears up for you.  Pain is the body's way of telling you to stop doing something.  Most times we ignore it when it's finger pain, but it may make sense to try to use alternate fingerings for chords or try not to use that finger too much if it's at all possible to avoid.  If it's not possible to avoid, it may be worth getting checked out.  Maybe it's just a blister.  That's be so awesome if it were.  Think of that - 88 years old and playing 'til his fingers blister.  How freakin' cool are you?

I'm streaming RadioMargaritaville today.  Usually I stream Pandora while I work.  Today it's Radiomargaritaville.  Once it goes to repeat, I'll switch over.  Or if they play something really annoying as they are wont to do.
