Actually in this case Brad you had written http; instead of http: preventing the link from working. I corrected it so it would work and it automatically turned blue.

If the link is correct it will be blue so if it is not you need to carefully check what you have written.

PS *** I used the BBCode formatting to show the words above in blue. Click on the BBCode link the the foot of the page where you write a message for further info.***

Hi Mo-jo and welcome to Chordie,

I would suggest you look in the 'Public books'. On the right of the page you will see 'Absolute Beginners (211)' There are 211 books of songs with the easier ones is them. Scan through them and find the songs that you know and like, these you can then add to your own 'Songbook' for easier reference in the future.

Hi Rhiannon,

I like the lyrics you have written but as you know 'a song ain't a song until it has music' so I am impatienly waiting until you have converted the melody you have into chords. Perhaps when you do you will honour us with a recording of it too smile.

Hi iitsLObabyOX and welcome to Chordie,

It is always a little difficult to comment on a song without the chords being in place or a recording to hear it but this is my impression, for what is is worth.

The lyrics are fine and I like the story they tell but I did have difficulty in playing it without the chords in the right position as I kept getting the syncronisation of words and chords wrong. Personally I would have liked to have seen more chord variation as I found it a little repetitous when I played it but, without hearing the melody you have put to it, that may just have been me and my interpretation. We shall have to persuade to you to record your song so that we can get a true picture of it.

That being said it is a fine first offering to the Forum and I look forward to hearing more from you. Well done and thank you.

Thanks Russ, I do have the DVD of the film and had seen Steve's footage to help me create the atmosphere of the era in the song. I am pleased you think it worked.

Hi Ark, I was fascinated by Steve and Janet's dedication to their re-enactment of this film, hence the song. Thank you.

Daddycool, glad you like it, thanks.

Roger

Rhiannon, I can always count on you for kind words and an ego boost, thank you. I will go look at your song now.

Russ, it is odd the you should mention the 'salt mines'. There is a working one only about 5 miles from my location, in the town of Loulé, but I can assure you I am not going to apply for a job there.

Anyway the main reason for this post is just to let you all know that I do not expect to have the final mix of the song ready until next weekend. I have just heard that one of the contributors is unwell and will not be able to send their offering for a few days, although they have kindly offered to step down so I can offer the part to someone else, I have declined and said I would wait.

The knee is still extremely painful even with a knee support and plenty of painkillers. It has not been helped by spending a further day as a slave to a cement mixer, feeding it sand, cement and water and then having to whellbarrow away all it regurgitates. I even overworked the wheelbarrow and broke it today. This old dog does not give in easily lol

But to more important matters. "Wrapped in Happiness" is shaping up very well I am awaiting items from just a couple of people now. Hopfully it will not be long now before it is ready for public consumption.

Southpaw, Man I have set here for the last hour writing you out a list. The first time I got about 10 songs listed ready to post and then changed the page instead of switching tabs...urgggg!! After cursing for 10 minutes I sat down and made a longer post and was at about song 15 or 16 when my wife came in and we got talking and I f#%*@d up and did it again..... I'm not going to sit here and redo it all tonight ,It's getting late and work is early, But maybe I'll throw you a few more ideas tomorrow when I'm not so green wink Just had to share my current frustration!! lol -Pix

Don't know if it would work but sometimes I have done something similar (or my cat walks over the keyboard) and I lost everything. I found that very often pressing the right mouse key brings up a menu with 'undo' at the top - works like magic.

Absolutely. A 12 string just has double strings that, with the exception of the two treble sets, are tuned an octave apart which give a much fuller sound than a 6er.

Picking is not as easy as you have to catch both strings evenly and the neck is wider than a 6er.

These days they are tuned to E unlike when I got my first one in the 60's and had to tune to D to prevent damage to the neck (in those days there was no such thing as different gauge strings - one size fitted all smile).

Hi jtimbrell,

You could download the free Auacity programme: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and use it do change the pitch yourself. I just tried on a recording of mine and can make myself sound just like Pinky and Perky lol.

Thank you Russ and Jeff,

The song, which has been a favourite if mine since Peter Paul and Mary sang it in the 60's, has been put on YouTube more as a tribute to the miners and especially the rescue workers, like Brad's father. Even though they know that the mine is unstable they will still take the risk to go back down to rescue their collegues. Brave men indeed.

Well I could send you what I have already but that would spoil the pleasure of waiting in pregnant anticipation for the finished piece lol.

I am waiting for offerings from three others (one I have not heard from so I do not know if I will get that) and I do not want to rush anyone into sending something they are not entirely happy with.

Rest assured I will send all the contributors a copy before I upload it to Friends of Chordie, announce it here and post it in the Songwriting section.

Latest update at the end of the weekend.

I have recieved a bass track from Scott (Fatstrings), lead guitar from Ark, keyboard from Randy (Riddler) and harmonica from Russ. I had asked Russ for lead guitar but he sent me a harmonica track instead which was brilliant (I had not thought of including harmonica). Thank you guys for your for your efforts

I have spent this evening mixing the tracks and it is coming along very well. I am more than pleased with the way this is shaping.

So I have roped in 4 people with the writing and 4 with the music with more to come. I am really getting excited about this and willingness of fellow Chordians to help.

Hi Micky,

My advise to you is to go out and try the guitars. What I think about a particular guitar is not important, it will be you that will be playing it so it need one that both feels and sounds good to you. I am not concerned with brand names, if a guitar suits my wallet, my hands and my ears it is what I will buy.

Good luck,

Roger

The 23rd of this month was the 50th anniversary of this tragic event and I have recorded and put Peggy Seeger/Ewan McColl's "Ballad of Springhill" on YouTube with a slide show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpbalZ5DUbE

The interesting thing about this is that Badeye's father was a Dreagerman at that time and he, and his team were the first to get to the trapped men. His team must have been exceptionally courageous as out of all the brave men that sought to rescue their collegues, just five were awarded a Gold Ring of Bravery from England's Prince Phillip, and Badeyes' father was one of them. The first and last photo show Badeye's father on the far left.

Brad, your father was a very brave man, you must be immensely proud of him, and his award, which I know you now have, is probably your most treasured posession.

Ooops,

Still at least I made you out to be younger than you are. The last time I got an age wrong I made a lady out to be older than she was. I offered to be whipped or keel hauled but she settled for a song I wrote for her lol.

After Riddler's message I have just listened to 'Signe' and that is a far better balanced recording. Well played and a good recording.

It certainly sounds very Eric Clapton so I am guessing it is one of his pieces.

I wrote this song after I had a message from a Steve Clarke asking if he could use my cover of "Unchained Melody" in his amateur re-make of "Brief Encounter" which is a long term project and not yet completed. My curiosity was aroused and I watched the film only to realise that there was not title track written for it. Although the 1945 film is from Laura Jesson's (Celia Johnson) perspective, I wrote the song from Dr Alec Harvey's (Trevor Howard) point of view.

I sent the song to Steve for him to use or discard as he saw fit and he has just posted it on YouTube with still shots from his filming. If you wish to look it is at: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=u75bMX4uPgY

Wow Scott (Fatstrings) is on the ball. This morning I recieved a 'trial run' recording from him and then had great fun playing along with a 'real live' bass player again, it has been a while. Thank you Scott and I am looking forward to your finalised piece.

This in no way means that I am pushing anyone to get their part completed. Take your time and be happy with your contribution. If you are happy with it I am sure that I will be. The final recording will be ready when it is and not before.

In some instances I have asked more than one performer to record a certain part and some to record on their second choice instrument in an effort to include as many as I can but everyone who contributes will be included in the final mix.

I think that everyone who contributed to the lyrics did a wonderful job. In spite of 4 different people writing the verses completely independantly, with only the chorus as a reference, there is a flow to them and it is not obvious that there are five different writers involved. There has only been minor tweaking by me to get the rhyming continuity and line length right to fit the melody. Thank you.

Most of the correspondence for this project has been through private e-mail apart from my initally asking for lyrics. For the recordings I have put together two synthesised backing tracks, one with vocals and one without, and sent them to the performers asking them to record their part alongside the track (to keep the tempo uniform and to give an idea of the style). I have asked for the backing track to be deleted after recording so I will recieve just their part and then I will mix them together. Although everyone will be working independently by using the backing track I think it will all blend in together nicely.

I am quite exited about this, I am more than happy with the the lyrics I was offered and also the intitial response from the performers as this is something I have been wanting to try for the past couple of years. The new Recording section has made it possible.
