Doc,
Very interesting topic . May even be able to shed some light .
The accoustic guitar is shaped the way it is to produce the tones that it does .
The top bout produces the treble , hence refered to as the treble bout . Lower bout produces the bass , ie. bass bout . The waist produces midrange .
That is why the dreadnoughts have a very strong mid , while jumbos have less mid and stronger treble and bass tones .
Of coarse there are many other variables that come into play such as body depth,
and the tone woods that the instrument is made of whether it be maple back and sides , rosewood back and sides , or mahagony .
Tops or soundboards are usually tight grain spruce , but there are variations on this also .
Very interesting that you would think of a square or rectangle shape .......
I have heard a fiddle played that had a rectangular shaped body ( they called it a cigar box fiddle ) I thought it lacked tonal definition , as it would if the above is true .
hope this helps.........

Guitarpix ,
You're right on with both those tips . Funny how when you've been doing this stuff for so many years and someone asks how to do it , you don't even think of all the little tricks we use .......

Re: Restringing Guitar (35 replies, posted in Acoustic)
One thing I forgot to mention on the restringing thing is something I have'nt seen any of the other old timers mention .
That is that when I put the cut end of the string through
the tuner hole , I form a tight U shape with it , then stick it back into the hole so I have a small loop showing . This does three things , one , it looks professional , two , it
makes it just about impossible for the string to slip , and three , if you use a dust cloth on your guitars , as I do , the tag end is'nt sticking out there to catch it ......

Oldnewbie ,
When I mentioned used guitars , I certainly was'nt recommending E-bay . An expert can be taken for a ride there . Most larger music stores have nearly as many used as new and if you don't trust them to sell you a good used instrument , I would'nt trust them to sell you a good new one .
Anyway , enjoy the search ,
sometimes the hunt is half the fun........Good luck.......

Re: Restringing Guitar (35 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Oldnewbie ,
Your local music store should have a tool like the thing on the winder but better quality and properly designed to do the job of pulling .
Back on topic though , I take my off then linseed oil the fingerboard then restring.
And yes , as has been mentioned , your guitar reaching equilibrium again is directly commensurate to how long it has been unstrung . For some reason that seems to be worse on violins . I've been known to cringe when I have someone bring me a fiddle that's been in their attic for years , and they want strings put on it so someone can play it ......tommorow.............

Re: A/E upgrade purchase (24 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hey oldnewbie ,
Have you considered looking at used stuff . Sometimes if you want something that won't give problems down the road , you might be better off . Like my bro. points out on guitars that are ten - fifteen years old " if the neck and soundboard have'nt warped or moved in that time , they aint gonna .
Also don't buy anything based on their warranty , just
about anything that will go wrong with a guitar's structure or finish , can be blamed on humidity or lack of , and that's not covered anyway . It's too easy for the mfgs. to say that since it's been in your care , custody , and control , you have'nt taken proper care of it .
Just my two cents........

Hey Badeye ,
I want to join your band , sounds like a blast . Any jam where you're emptying beer out of the guitars & fiddles in the morning is for me !!!???
Your story reminds me of the most traumatic experience of my life and the shrinks say it's best to talk about these things .......at one of our big jams , one of my nieces got up to do a song and grabbed one of her dad's guitars ( very nice J B Player accoustic electric ). On her way up to stage area she had to walk behind the food table , I think she tripped on a cord and fell with that guitar in her hand . She was fine but when she stood up , still holding the guitar I was horrified to see that the headstock had broken clean off and was hanging by the strings .........................
I knew I would never be the same............

Re: Cheap crappy guitar? (38 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hey longboarder ,
You don't know what a snob is , untill you've met a violin snob . They are the worst . They think that because that instrument's heritage dates back four thousand years , then it's sacrilege to deviate from their perceived norm . Whenever I'm around them I love talking about solid body electrics , accoustic pickups ,
and , oh yea , fretted violins ,
that one drives em crazy.....
But about guitars , you know it's funny but around here you don't see the guys in bar bands playing anything but less expensive instruments . For good reason I suppose , you won't see me taking my Guild F-65ce out to a jam where I don't know exactly what will be going on . I take
one of my alot less expensive guitars that plays and sounds every bit as good .
I guess like these band guys , I don't mind emptying the beer out of a three hundred dollar guitar the next morning ............

I'd like to hear some of your band names .
A few years ago at one of our jams , one of the guys said , hey we should have a name for our little band . I thought for a moment and since three of us were ten years apart in age I said how about " Decades " and everybody said Cool .....
The age differences make for some very diverse repitiore...........

Get your butt up there and play ......you're only going to have regretts if you don't .
Years ago I was asked to play in a band or two and I said no . And now when we have our big jam parties (sometimes thirty five people
just watching and listening )
there's nothing like the rush .
So even though I've never played prof. now I want to be heard any chance I get ....

I agree with zurf , it's real .
I have'nt owned a dreadnought shaped guitar for years but whenever I play my bro's Guild D-4 , I find myself not knowing what make or model I want , but that I got to get one .
Most of the folky rock stuff I play I think sounds better on my jumbo or minijumbos .
( minijumbos for Simon & Garf. )

Re: Luthier advice (44 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi dguyton ,
I owned a small music store
and I can tell you from experience that setting up and repairing solid body electrics will be a small part of your business volume . As far as the repair part goes , untill you can make a name for yourself setting up electrics , the bulk of your repair business will be accoustic instruments , ie. guitars , violins and such. Neck resets on guitars , repairing sound board cracks,
parting a violin to repair cracks and or rebuilding a crashed violin . I've done my share of resets and violin rebuilds successfully , but I
was always nervous when these instruments were valuable . If you get to that
point be sure you do not take on any repair job that you're not sure you can do well . It's better to send the job elsewhere than to mess it up .
A music store or shop also means setting up dealerships with suppliers and when it comes to musical instruments
there aint no such a thing as floor planning , everything is paid for when you get it or within thirty days . That's where the problem comes in for guitar dealers if you're small , even the distributors who handle the cheap stuff expect you to buy a certain volume per year , and the big name stuff will want you to buy twenty to thirty instr.
per year , whether you can sell them or not . I don't want to discourage but do all your research and know what your getting into . I still do instrument repair along with other things and I love it . And I don't have to deal with all the other crap .......

Hi there ,
I guess we're both new here . I'm an old guitar , fiddle player , / songwriter . Always thought it would be fun to try out the baritone uke . Might have to look in to that .
By the way , is Gerry Long your real name ? Mine is Jerry Short , I registered under my business name because nobody seems to use their real names on these forums .
Off point , I know , but it's
funny . Back in the early sixties when I was in grade school I went with a girl by the name of Merry Long . Alas , it did'nt work out ( the other kids tortured us too much about the names ).

Re: will a floyd rose trem fit on a strat? (5 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi guys ,
Over the years I've had one or two guitars with Bigsbys on them and I've come to the conclusion that there's nothing like a Gibson style stop tailpiece for stayintuneitiveness ( isn't that a word ? ) Anyway my little bro had a fender strat a few years ago that had the F.R. trem factory installed on it and I don't remember a jam where he was'nt cussing that thing . He got rid of it before resorting to the stop block that you can buy for them . But then , what's the point ???

Re: A "BRILLIANT" THEORY (10 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi dguyton ,
I will certainly concede that point . Way back when I started playing I had a Stella flat top that my dad left when he ...well .. left , with a wide flat fingerboard and action at the 12th fret that you could drive a hummer through . Why I kept at it I still don't know ( glad I did though ) It was many years before I could afford something better .
Who knows , if it was'nt for that floating bridge that would never really intonate no matter what I did , I may have been Buck Owens' side man instead of Don Rich.....??

Re: A "BRILLIANT" THEORY (10 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Pardon me , but , who is Slash and do I need to know who he is ? I'll ask my little brother lead player , he'll know......
Really though , all B.S. aside
it amazes me how many people are convinced that the
axe they're using makes their sound . Once talked to a right handed guy who figured if he took a left handed strat and restrung it to play right handed , he would have that " Hendrix "
sound ???
One time my little bro was playing my black ES-330 copy
and I told him it gave him that B.B. King look......, didn't
really sound like him though......

Re: HOME RECORDING TOOLS TO HELP MAKING SONGS (2 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Doc ,
This is an interesting topic for me . About ten yrs ago when I decided to start recording some of my stuff
( for posterity??? ) I started looking at what was out there
in my price range ( 200.00 -
600.00 ) and was going to go with the digital stuff untill I
started asking people who were using them ( or trying to ) . They all said the same thing , the machine was wonderful and you'd be amazed what it is capable of .
However they still had'nt been able to devote the time to learn how to use it so they ended up sitting around collecting dust . Needless to say I went with the old standby ( Tascam 424 - 4 track ) and I was able to use
it right out of the box . Of course it has some drawbacks
you have to have a machine to mix down on to if you want the product on disc . But I have'nt been sorry I went this way ......
