OK folks, I've got some sound clips up on the cloud. Here's the link to my page (there's just one recording there that's not from the gathering):  https://soundcloud.com/user-935684483

Glad to hear you made it home safely, Joe!

I'm so glad that those who were able to make it came out!  I think everyone from Chordie had a good 4-6 hour drive to get here.  What an amazing weekend this was.  Since DE and JJJ (and their lovely ladies) are still in town, I'll save the "party review" for another day.

A very very very SPECIAL thank you to UJB for all the video recording that was done!  I actually was pretty busy with my smoky butts, and had such a good time knowing that I didn't have to worry about video too much.  Joe, you truely made MY day much easier!  I did take a couple pictures, and only a couple videos and sound recordings.  For now, here's a few pics, and I'll get my couple videos and sound clips up in a few days.  smile

To tide you all over, here's a little Dirty Ed and his lovely bride:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iNXlFp … e=youtu.be

Hmmm... sounds like I've got about 3 hours to shower, scrub the paint off my hands (face, hair, arms, floor), clean the kitchen up, bake some darn cookies, and tidy up the house a little ... I better get moving!  big_smile  I've worked my tail off, and will be happy to call it officially time to relax when UJB pulls in the driveway!  LET THE PARTY BEGIN!!!!  (in a few hours.. cuz.. paint covered me is not a pretty sight!)

Kev - I'm curious how you set this up?  Did you just call around to retirement communities and ask if they'd like you to come in and play?  How did the conversation go?  I've thought a million times about doing this.  We have a lot of them around, and remember as a teen going into some with our girls choir as well as when I was a little one singing Christmas Carols with the Girl Scouts.  They were (almost) always so overjoyed to see us.  As I homeschool one of my children, I've thought a few times about possibly putting a few songs together with her and doing something like this.  It would be a nice community service type of thing for her (for her girls scouts badges), and a good learning experience and lesson on paying it forward as well as empathy.  Plus, as Roger can attest to, I think the people would fall in love with her and... I know to the older folks, a smiling child is something that is simply priceless.

Not a female... but a find from 2006, the not yet famous Jason Mraz playing acoustic and unplugged in a book store.  smile  There's 50 minutes of music here.  This is what I'll be listening to today while cleaning house.  He's always impressed me, as a guitar player, singer, human being.  smile

Very relaxing - I think the spaghetti strings is a nice touch with this song in particular.  smile  It just gives it that visual that goes right along with the audio!  Although, I don't care for sitting on the headstock and spinning.  That makes my motion sickness kick in!  ha ha!  Jim and I were taking recently about how having a baritone guitar in the arsenal might be fun!

As for the spaghetti strings, I looked into this at one point.  Video is really just a ton of images taken in fast succession.  So, we're talking about FPS - frames per second.  If the FPS isn't super fast, you get this effect.  I stuck my cell phone inside my guitar to test it out (a friend actually asked at that time), and sure enough, my strings did the wave too.  I'm actually really surprised that a gopro camera doesn't have a faster video recording speed!

OH BTW - If we end up in the backyard, where we belong, the WiFi signal there is WEAK.  So, there may not be a video stream to share with all ya'll that can't make it this year.  I actually got rid of one of my WiFi routers that was acting as an extender.  Well, that is of course unless I find the time to move the router.  That could still happen, maybe.

We'll get lots of video though to upload after the fact.

Some seriously good word play in there, although it sounds like some seriously heavy stuff with family. sad I agree with CG - perhaps "Broken Branch".  I have a feeling another verse or a really strong chorus is needed.  This one is going to be catchy Mojo, and like all the best ones, it may take some time to get through it all the way.  Reminds me a bit of the relationship between a father and daughter I know (not me).  sad

Your clouds all have comments! smile  Thanks for sharing everyone that has so far!  Keep it up!  I think this is a record for the FIRST day of the month (hmm.. I wonder how everyone was so prepared for the one song so far in advance... so weird).  big_smile

Me too!  Well, I'll be here, but wish you two could make it!  smile

Yep TF - from looking at her, I'd say she's probably a size 12-14. Being in the public eye, I guess she was worried that she'd get all kinds of negativity over her weight.  Compared to "most" singers, I guess she's a little heavy.  Compared to most women she's about average.  As a woman, I've paid attention to the "size ideals" over the years.  It's crazy how society has gone through extremes on what type of size/body style is considered appropriate or even attractive.  I agree - her size has nothing to do with her musical talent.  Anne Wilson is a perfect example.  Very well put!  Marilyn Monroe was somewhere between a size 10-12, and she was a beauty icon.  Now a days it seems a size 2 is "in".  Meh... If I were a size 2, I'd blow away in the wind!  ha ha ha!

Pete's been on Youtube - so he appears to be doing well.  Just hasn't been visiting us here too much.  NELA sad He may possibly just be having internet issues.  As I understand it, he was on a dial up connection - or a mobile connection.  I can't recall for sure, but he didn't have great internet at the house.  My fingers are crossed that's all it is preventing him from visiting us.  I do believe he's got lots of family around, so I hope his health is holding up.

Irish and German here!  Though... I'm not as young as I once was, I'll be playing hostess, AND it's really no fun when my fingers don't move the way I want them to.  smile  Back when I was in my 20's .... nah, that's a story better served on the rocks in person!  wink  Working today - then it's time to get the house and yard ready for company for the rest of the week.  OH - for those that were here last year, just WAIT till you see what Jim did with the porch!  It's not 100%, but it sure is a lot better!  Fingers crossed the weather is good.  So far it's looking a little questionable.  We'll make room for UJB and DE inside should they be concerned about leaky tents overnight!  smile  If we have to, we can always move from the yard to the side or front porch - or inside.  We have a pretty open dining room/living room area with plenty of space for picking!

Ya know, I don't know much about much.  smile  I did visit the Martin factory, so I know how much hand work goes into their guitars and how much of it is automated.  For me, I figured that was enough to make me want that brand.  They know what I don't, and appear to do things "right".  I still don't know a whole lot about bracing.  I also really don't know if a messy glue job on the inside is going to really make a difference in sound.

I just played a made in China all mahogany Ibenez artwood series guitar yesterday.  It was selling for somewhere in the $300 range.  With my eyes closed off to the name and the price tag, I would have easily said it was comparable to my Martin 000-15M that cost $1000 more!  It may have even fret cleaner.  The neck is not as wide as my Martin, but the mellow tone was there (a little more dark than mellow), and it was LOUD.  I did my research when I got my Martin, so I know they use a difference species of wood when they say mahogany (on the year guitar I own that is).  I know Martin does most of their work by hand not factory.  I presume Ibenez made in China is mostly factory work.  I expect if one inspected INSIDE the guitar the build would be different, maybe there'd be some glue spill inside or something.  I don't know.  BUT - I do know that I could LOVE that guitar just as well - maybe even more - than my Martin.

There's a lot to be said for how a guitar plays and sounds when it's in your hands, vs. how it sounds in someone else's hands! Do come back and let us know how it goes CG!

thanks Amy,I saw that choice coming I already know how to play it:-) :-)

AND... are we FINALLY going to hear a recording from you????  Come on!  Even TIGLJK has posted his recordings up there.  He's been on Chordie a good long while, and only just started posting his own recordings recently.  You can do it!

Nice one Mojo!  I like your cool relaxed style of playing Knockin' on Heaven's door.

Ha ha ha... you DID beat Roger to it!  Although, technically you posted it a day early - not that I can fault you on that.  I did say GO!  big_smile  (trying to give Roger a good excuse here, really).

Would YOU like to be the one to pick the song of the month for SEPTEMBER?

This month will be a repeat of last month.  We'll place your names in a hat and we'll pick two people's names from the hat, and let YOU pick the song to feature as the Song of The Month!

If YOU would like to choose the next Featured Song of the Month

Reply to this thread with something interesting that indicates your desire!
No need to pick the song yet! Surprise everyone with your choice if your name gets pulled from the hat!
Just enter your name in this thread for a chance to WIN your choice of song!

Examples: "PICK ME!  PICK ME!"
"I want to pick the song"
"Tomatoes are fruits.  Drop my name in the hat please!."
*or whatever imaginable thing you can add that also includes something that makes it clear that you want a chance to choose the next FSOTM!  big_smile

Everyone that posts in this thread indicating their desire will have their name "placed in a hat" and the name will be randomly chosen.  If you are chosen, you then get to choose the song of the month!  The winner will be chosen and their name posted in this thread by mid to end August.  The winner must submit the ONE song of their choice for the song of the month by the end of the Month.

Wow!  Nice find BGD!  Keep em coming!  The amazing part here isn't just the notes these guys are picking out, but the technique too.  There's a lot going on to make those notes on the Sax pop that can't be seen.  Amazing reed work!  smile

This month, we have two songs to work on again!  Names were placed in a hat and pulled out randomly (although the event was partially rigged due to overwhelming member input) and the winners were Roger and TIGLJK!

Roger chose the song titled, Knockin on Heaven's Door
This song was originally written by Bob Dylan.  Dylan wrote it for the 1973 western film, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid. It was made popular (again?) in the early 90's by Guns n Roses. I think a big part of what made this song so popular was how EVERY time Axl sang it, he made it personal. You could feel the feels (they played it at a tribute concert to Freddie Mercury as well). I have a feeling we'll hear a few different really cool covers!  Several other big names have covered it over the years.  Look them up!  Try something different!

Here's some simple chords:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 24498.html although there's TONS more both here on Chordie as well as around the web!
Because listening to Dylan rocks, here's a Dylan recording of the song:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJpB_AEZf6U
And, because I'm an 80's-90's child - it would just be wrong not to include a little Axl (I think that at least Beamer would agree ha ha):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjrJXLtO-IQ

TIGLJK chose the song titled, Six Strings Down
This is a Jimmy Vaughn song that was dedicated to his brother Stevie Vaughn who died in 1990 and other great, but deceased guitarists. It was written by a few guys ( Neville brothers, Jimmy V, Eric Kolb, Kelsey Smith) and first appeared on Vaughn's Strange Pleasures album in 1994 (thanks for the background info TIGLJK!).

Here's a version of the song on Chordie:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 29673.html
As I wasn't familiar with this one, I thought perhaps a youtube video may help others as well:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myrcSyLMowE

http://www.desismileys.com/smileys/desismileys_3428.gifSo there ya have it folks!  Try one, try them both!  Make a recording or a video, and share the link as a reply to this topic below!

Doug, that's so very nice of you - not just to let us know, but also to help them out as you are.  Walking someone through a hard drive update isn't as daunting as it sounds, though it's not a task to be taken lightly either.  Good for you!  Get em up and running!  smile  Thank you!

As is typical, I go a good few weeks then leave ya'll hanging.  It's Saturday, but hey, better late than never right?  So - I've got for you a pop artist that's pretty well known for her upbeat retro style music.  Meghan Trainor.  She started writing when she was just 11.  She's made some super popular songs because she has an AMAZING voice.  She's popular with my little girls - they just change the words a little.  wink  This song, she actually started writing when she was much younger and it was originally titled, "Give me a Chance".

She even avoided her fame because she was concerned about her size.  She's co-written a slew of famous songs over the years for well known recording artists. She finally gave in, and after she got her BIG record deal, "Give me a Chance" was rewritten and is an ode to being who you are!  You may not have a perfect body, but hey, that's seriously ok!

Wow!  Absolutely amazing!  Who knew the guitar could even sound like that?  smile  Thank you TF!  You find some serious gems, and thank you for reminding me about this thread.  I've been so crazy busy lately, I haven't had time to peruse Chordie as I'd like and I needed that!  smile
