I like the Stratabond neck, but it's good that you found out that you don't before spending the gas and time.

Welcome to Chordie.

My best advice is to practice.  Slow down, get whatever it is you're doing right, then make it faster.  Accuracy begets speed.  Practice begets accuracy.

That, and stay away from the B chord.  It's evil.

The guy in the Youtube video Toots linked.  If you watch it, you'll understand.

Pete - I didn't see an invitation from you, but I sent you one.  At least I hope I did.  There are 26 Pete Bensons, but one of them said Hurricane and looked like you.  I figured that was the one.

BGD - I'll be looking for your invitation to connect.  Or you can e-mail me your name and Skype name and I'll send one to you.

I fear that we shall need a small island in the Atlantic to hold our campfire.  It's going to be awfully difficult building an island there, growing the trees, cutting them down and drying them for fuel, and then finding someone to tend the flames.

That's great.  You'd be welcome.  I haven't seen your name pop up before.  Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, but it sounds West African.  They're always such beautiful sounding names from there.  Please let me know your time zone so that I can better plan to include you.

I have Skype but need to buy a microphone because my P.C. doesn't have one built-in like some lap tops do.

Here's a relatively inexpensive model that I've used when we had several people in a conference room all using one internet line.  It worked well.  I've been on the other end of it too, and the audio was clear.

Here's a USB studio quality mic that I picked up cheap at an on-line auction site.  I've been very pleased with it.

I started a thread called World Wide Jamm Session.  The idea is to do a campfire style jam where each person plays a song and then passes the baton to the next player.

There seemed a good bit of interest in participating, but it seemed folks weren't sure how to do it.  Here's how.

1. Be sure that your computer has a microphone and if you want to share video, a web cam.  (Web cam is optional)  Most laptops have built in microphones.  Desktop computers usually have to have one added.  It doesn't have to be high quality.

2. Go to www.skype.com and sign up for an account.  Accounts are free, at least in the U.S.  I think they are free worldwide.

3. Once you have an account and have installed the software (also free to download), launch the Skype application.

4. Go to add a contact.  You can do this either by clicking on the Add a Contact button near the bottom of the Skype screen, or by using the top menu with the following steps: Click on Contacts to get a drop down menu.  From the drop down menu, click on Add a Contact.

5.  A search screen will appear.  In the search screen put "Derek Zurfluh" in the Full Name or Skype Name field.  Then click the "+Add" button.

This will send a message to me that you want to add me as a contact.  When I accept, we will be connected.

Tell me below in this thread or in the other thread that you want to participate.  However, if you tell me you want to participate but don't establish the connection between us via Skype, we won't be able.

Thanks,
Zurf

I have no recommendations, but good luck to your daughter.

NTG - I think the guy at my local store told you not to put string on a nylon guitar.  He did say that he wasn't sure what would happen to the neck when it had less tension on it than it was designed to have.

DJ - To the degree there is a limit on the number of people who can participate at one time, I think it's fair to give priority to folks who want to play.  But if all slots aren't taken, then I surely don't object to you joining and not playing.  Though I seriously and sincerely encourage you to play anything.  You have seen how folks are on here.  You won't be laughed at or made fun of.  You'll only be encouraged and get some suggestions that may help you.  It could only be positive for you.  You would not BELIEVE how badly I played at my first campfire session.  Unbelievably bad, but everyone there was encouraging and helpful.

To some degree it's a question of life in the years and not years in the life.  Nevertheless, it's always hard to lose a friend.  I'm sorry for your loss, Russell.

It's a bargain at $475, oval hole or not.

I don't care about the shape of sound holes.  I care about the sound and the ease of playing.

Process right now is to get a Skype account if you don't have one (they're free).  When you get it, send a connection invitation (I'm not sure of the right terminology) to Derek Zurfluh (that's me).   More to follow.

Finger pick.  Use your nails.

Also, try thin picks.  Fender makes some that are thin enough that I bend them around my thumb with what I consider to be normal pressure.

I hope you find something that you like.

Well I guess a two-hour heads up was too ambitious.  It's 2:00 eastern and no one has sent me a notice saying they'd like to give it a try.

How about a couple of Americans (in this case using Americans with the broader meaning of North, Middle, and South America) give it a try one evening?  I don't mean to leave out the Europeans, but it will be easier to do a small test without the larger time difference given that our West Coast's early evening is your middle of the night.

I'll let a few Americans chime in with timing of when they are available and we'll get a test date and time set.

I like that idea Pete.  I'm going to check out Google+ too.  I like the idea of a 'hang-out' if it is really what it implies.  If it's a place you can come and go, check to see if anyone's logged in, that would be great.   With Skype, we'll have to schedule a particular time, ask folks to be on-line with the Skype accounts open a few minutes ahead of time, and then someone make the call.  Not too hard at all, but it requires a bit of coordination.

So, it's Sunday noon-time here on the East Coast of the U.S.  Whoever would like to try a small version at 2:00 U.S. time, e-mail me with your Skype name or send me a Skype connection request.  Email is under my name attached to this message.  My Skype address is Derek Zurfluh.

See someone (maybe) in two hours.

Dino - Each person does one song, then passes the baton to the next in line.  Keep going around and around as long as we feel like it.  Stagger off to bed when we can't hang any more if we don't fall asleep in our chairs first.  No date yet.  I don't know how to use Skype either.  But how hard can it be (famous last words).
