Many who are not wealthy and have no entourage meet the same fate. Addiction is a great equalizer. It does not recognize bank account values nor color of skin. I feel for all of them. That said, recognizing the talent of Ms. Houston does not diminish the value of those addicts who suffer and die without recognition. I wish that the recognition given to her would shine a light on the suffering of others. There's not much that others can do - and in fact doing anything for them can be worse than doing nothing. But collectively, we cannot and should not be heartless.
Ms. Houston completely changed pop music. Her runs and trills came out of the pews and into pop on the power of her voice and her interpretive vision. I do not care for that style, but I recognize her influence and her talent. But even that incredible amount of talent can do nothing in the face of addiction. Only tremendous will supplemented in most cases by the grace of God can overcome those desires.
I noticed that with CD's that the terms of sale had changed. I'm probably the only contract weenie around who actually reads the license agreements that come with music. CD's actually authorize the duplication of the music for personal use. So I'm allowed to copy the CD to my hard drive and share it on my home network to be played by any of the computers in my house. And I'm allowed to put it on my MP3 player to carry it around with me. What I'm not allowed to do is put it on Jerome's MP3 player or copy it to his hard drive because that is distribution rather than duplication for personal use. I found that fascinating. Probably only I found that fascinating.
I'll search for Red Skelton. I think it is useful to have the common experience shared by all Americans of knowing the pledge. There are certain faiths that do not take pledges, and so I think as a matter of religious freedom they should not be required to take it. I agree with you on the issue of atheists. Just do not include 'under God' in the pledge when saying it. However, at civil meetings (which include public school sessions), I think that reciting the pledge is a good idea.

I feel for you Bun bun. I wish they could fix whatever is causing the pain rather than trying to eliminate just the pain portion. A friend of mine had five vertebrae wrapped in titanium last year. It relieved his pain and he can walk again (which was questionable), but he'll never get better. He can still pick a guitar like crazy, though. Here's hoping your luck is better than his in the long run.

Welcome to G-minus and Harvey as well. Sorry I missed you in my prior message
Hello David and welcome to Chordie. We have a similar experience. I started learning at when married for 18 years to play a song for my wife on our 20th anniversary. We're married 24 years now, so six years of playing. I feel behind all the time, too. I'm 46. Can't play a thing the "right" way still, but make music that I enjoy playing. Even if listening to it is a bit of a challenge.

Newbie Dean wrote:As you can tell, I'm a NEWBIE myself. I started this almost 3 years ago at age 60 and having a riot. As far as strumming, I have the same problem. I listen to the original arrangement and try to play along with it. I mute the strings and just try to match the strum/beat of the song. I was working on a song the other day when my wife had a suggestion. We enjoy dancing of all types, she was dancing a 2-step to the tune I was listening to and trying to develope a strum. She said "try stumming to the dance step; slow-slow-quick-quick 2-step". It sounded pretty good! I played that a few times and then modified it stightly from that. It worked for me. good Luck.
Your wife is brilliant, and so are you for listening to her.

Nope. I still use Zebco push-button spincasting reels with my daughters. My youngest has terrific aim with her ScoobyDoo rod. I tried to give her a better quality rod last year and she wanted to stick with ScoobyDoo. I've got a few rods rigged up for kids and take the neighborhood girls out on the rare afternoons there isn't something else scheduled. One time I had to stop at a discount clothing store and then over to a friends house because in the time it took me to help out my eldest daughter, the youngest and two of her friends were sitting in mud with the water up to their armpits and laughing their fool heads off. It's a good thing they had to sit in booster seats or they'd have ruined my truck's bench seat. It was a little awkward sending them home in different clothes and telling their parents that they'd get the regular clothes and shoes back after I got the laundry done. The parents, knowing that we are a safe family, had no problems with me giving them baths at my friend's house and providing a change of warm, dry clothes. The moms weren't so keen on me traipsing little mud-demons through Gabriel Brothers, though, especially when I told them that I bumped into our pastor while we were there. My friend's wife helped with the baths to keep everyone's reputation intact.

edited by Zurf for clarity.
One of the rods I just got is a medium action very similar to a cane rod. But it has the power of a graphite rod.
When it comes to wind, something I read by Lefty Kreh is what I'm going to try. He said that most people go up in size and try to 'punch' through the wind. He suggests going down in weight so that you get more line speed at the tip and a smaller profile in the line to be less affected by the wind. I can't say whether it'll work, but there's some sense to it, and it's tough to argue against Lefty Kreh's advice on anything related to casting a fly line.

I have two bamboo rods that will never see another stream. They belonged to my grandfather's older brother. My grandfather was born in the late 1880's. That should give you an idea of the age of these rods. I broke a spinning rod of Uncle Harold's when I was a boy and I've not forgotten it. It was my largest smallmouth for decades though, and from a trout stream no less. So, a good fish to break a memorable rod.
Anyway, Uncle Harold's fly rods won't see the water.
My wife does know about the rods. I'm eager to get them to the water to test them out. Thinking about pulling out the waders today just to get them out. It's only 20F degrees though and the wind is blowing a steady 15mph, so perhaps I'll wait. Backyard casting with these just won't cut it.

I have found that guitars are of much greater use back at camp than out on the river. If you play well enough, people won't mind you doing it to have music while they go about the camp chores.
Fly Rod Acquisition Syndrome
Two 7 weight fly rods in the past few days. One is medium action for nymphing and getting a lot of power into underweighted line for casting into the wind (the opposite of the modern idea that you need heavy line to "punch" the wind) and the second is a 10' 7 weight fast action for long casts of large bass bugs and poppers. At least former was a gift. It had better have been because it's a Scott rod worth about the same as the 000-15M Martin I have my eye on.
The water had better warm soon. I go broke nearly every winter because I buy stuff instead of using it. When I can get on the water to use the stuff, I am not out buying more.

Well tissy1247 I think you'll fit right in with that as your first comment.
Welcome to Chordie. Guy Clark should be give some sort of crown certainly, though I get the feeling he'd be satisfied with a Crown Royal.
Taylor 110's are great guitars! Happy NGD!
"Right good rummage" has the makings of a decent Country song, I think. I'm going to jot it in my hook book.
How can you claim to be swift of foot if you've only gone 5 miles in 33 years?
Oh. Wait a minute... I think I've got it now.
I'm glad you weren't hurt worse, and I'm also glad that the dog owner did the right thing by trying to find you.
I can recall when I used to bike ride a lot in bear and rattlesnake country in Pennsylvania. I was with a buddy and we were going up a steep hill on a public road. A redneck who was out in his yard thought it would be funny to sic his dogs on us while we were struggling up the hill. Until we pulled large hunting knives from our handlebar bags. Then he thought it would be a good idea to call his dogs back.

Sharp Russell. Good work.
Hey NELA. I lost a big sack full of gold. Let me know if you find it.

I'm sure that one of them will score more points than the other team. The one that does will be the team most likely to win.

What does it look like against a black primer?

That is a serious bummer for a Friday afternoon.
Some things aren't right by definition, and that's not right.

It was cool. Kind of short notice. Guy's had a tough row to hoe. It was nice to see that he found a woman who loves him as much as he loves her. Both adults when they met, who know what it means to marry. They really meant it when they took those vows. It wasn't some pro forma performance.
As the legal witness I even gave the bride away, even though I met her just this morning. She was confident enough to know that part at least was pro forma and was not offended by it.
Good people on a happy day.
Very nice.

I'll do what I can on the list:
'77 Mercury Bobcat
'78 Dodge Tradesman van
'78 Oldmobile Delta 88
'80 Chevy Malibu (hated it with a passion - I used to stall it in intersections hoping to get t-boned)
'88 Ford Tempo (bought new)
'76 Mercury Comet (loved it - did the Mooch America tour with it trying to find work and could sleep in the front seat comfortably)
'89 Plymouth Sundance (bought new)
'92 Ford Ranger (one of my favorites - kept it longest of all the vehicles)
'95 Taurus (loved it)
'96 Subaru Impreza (loved it - my first AWD car and I will never be without AWD or 4WD again if I can help it)
'02 (?) Mazda somethingorother - it was bright yellow and little and felt like driving a bumblebee - I was not a fan of this car
'04 Mazda MPV*
'00 Volvo V70 Crosscountry - I loved the car, but I did not love the size or frequency of the repair bills.
'06 Dodge Dakota 4x4*
* - current vehicles
The darn thing better sound fantastic after all this work. I hope you don't decide after all this that you really wanted candy apple red metallic flake instead of just plain candy apple red...
