so a sharpie is a big felt pen, so why didn't dj call it a felt pen so we less educated across da pond would know what you're talking about?

i was beginning to think toots was a bit of a sadist wanting to take some sharp implement to some sweet lady's software!

and i also think amy was right, if you buy an instrument, whether or not you play it, it is then 2nd hand. and who'd want a guitar signed by someone who hadn't actually played it?

playing upside down didnt make hendrix sound bad. though i must say having done the upsidedown thing more than once in a pub (or 2) it is difficult but not impossible. i was recently in tenerife and a fellow welshman named taffy (original huh?) played lefty on a right handed guitar and his lead was excellent. if you ever get to tenerife try taffy's bar and say phill sent you.

i was given a uke for my birthday last year, but it wont stay in tune, it's gathering dust in the corner now! but good luck, and welcome to chordie.

hi rog, this is just a suggestion and you can shoot me down in flames if you like, but i did a paint job in the house where i had to strip down some old, dark paint which had penetrated deep. when i couldnt get it all out i painted a white matt paint and let that sink in, then stained. the result was...interesting!

just as an update. i found i had a Cubase midi studio with my Alesis mixer. a few tweaks with the soundcard and i'm up and running. it's not as good as my old "Gold" studio though. i wish i could get that to work, but it was built for Windows 95, it ran well on XP but Windows 7's got it beat. if anyone can think of a way round it i'd be sure grateful

hi beamer,

i have an Alesis, it's an 8 track mini mixer which i bought new with a cheap price tag. it comes with a USB out put. that said
it doesn't seem to work very well into the PC. i think roger has the best solution which is to take a pair of RCA's size down to a mini jack and there you go. MAKE SURE YOU DONT LEAVE THE VOLUME TOO LOUD ON INPUT.

hi jerome,

i think it's my sound card, i took it from my old PC. it's creative audigy 2. i've down loaded all the driver updates but i'm not getting any sound from it! so i'll take it back to the shop tomorrow and let them sort it out. i've got cubase and cubasis, neither seem to be working! sobs.

hi geo,

i've got 2 mixcraft CD's. one's an MP3 music suite and 'tuther is an MP3 audio mix, they're both quite old and not fit for my purpose....dont worry i'll get there

thanks anyway

4984mill,

go to the songwriting forum. at the top right you'll see "add a new topic" click that, then either type in your song or if you have it on word or open office high light it, click "copy" go to the open page and click "paste" then the song will magically appear.
check out the sticky as to how you work the "chopro" program, and your chords will appear "all purdy like"

hi, thanks for your input and it's all been a big help.

as seriousfun said "money plays a big part" so true and i've just shelled out for my new PC, so the wife's not overjoyed about buying a new recording program!

i have a midi controler keyboard a korg k61p. it has a usb output (which i've never tried) and cubase studio on the CD, which i think is for XP. but as thinking is not knowing, i shall give that a go.

thanks for the ideas and help, going now to try that web site

i have been running XP on my PC since new (about 6 years) and using a midi studio called GOLD. so for a while i've been having problems with the PC, and sunday after many crashes it took the final dive and went to join mr babbage in that great internet cafe in the sky.

so, i go buy a new PC with windows 7, all singing all dancing, but it sucked in and spat out my midi program and my midi interface! so i'm not a happy camper!

i have searched the internet for a decent midi studio (for free of course), but even the free ones want a license, and after paying it the prog could still be rubbish.

and so, i would be ever so grateful if someone could suggest a good midi studio and point me in the right direction.

thanks

hi sloan,

you will also find that when you print out a song the chord windows print out also. though you should only do it for a school or musical education....technically, sort of (hush hush!)

hi kajir, welcome to poems

i agree with BGD, that it's never a good idea to put your phone no on line, you could get bombarded with calls from spammers or even nut-jobs. chordie has an email service so members can email you while retaining your privacy, so i'd recomend you edit your no out and invite members to email you if they're in you locale.
now to your poem; nice work, deep yet vivid! i can see why it might be difficult to put to music, but you can invite attempts by other members to put music to it.

dont be a stranger, lets see some more

anyone can lay an acoustic track which will sound good. it's when it comes to multi-tracking that the metronome comes into it's own. in the 50's and 60's, they would use a second drummer on recordings, "off mic" to keep a true beat. with the on-set of digital recording, the metronome is built into the recording equipment, so an extra track for the time keeper is not needed. just thought it might be of interest.

i agree with jerry, yamaha's are good, they're quite cheap over here (UK). if you were thinking of getting a used one, i had a lot of trouble with the "midi out" connector. i had it repaired once then it broke again, so keep an eye out for that.

i think the term your looking for is "weighted keys"

i was looking for a name for my rock band back in the 70's, a music teacher friend suggested "enchiriadis" which we used, i've forgotten what it means now but it was really funny listening to the mc's trying to pronounce it!

tfsails,

i'm guessing that by bending you are referring to the practice of speeding up or slowing down a recording to (usually) make the vocals sound better? it's normally a tape thing that knocks the tuning out, i wouldn't have thought that with digital recording it would de-tune.

the beatles did a lot of that to either give a song more "poke" or maybe just confuse we strummer's who try to play along. whichever way you look at it, it's annoying. but it's their song and their recording....catch 22?

it would help if it still works...lol

but seriously, check for hums and rattles (that might make a great name for a cd?)

when you plug it in, touch the strings to ensure it's safely earthed (no shocks)

if you can, check there are no tears in the speaker cone.

i know nothing of crate amps, these are just basic checks for any amp you might want to buy.

So long ago.               Phill Williams.

I was stood beneath the falls, and the icy waters fell upon my  skin.
Though the  desert winds were warm, and the sun was lonely in the sky.
No clouds or birds or vapour trails.
The only sound was water as it came fresh from the mountain streams.
To fall down here into this crystal pool.

              So long ago.

There came a sudden breeze, and a ripple formed and spread across the still and crystal pool.
And  as I looked around I saw, a  magic vision, shimmer like an image in the pool.
Lost and wandering in the desert sands
But when the water-still disturbed, still she stood there like an alabaster  form.
Fashioned by an artisan, so  long ago.

So long ago.  So long  ago.

What  magic do I see? This  vision naked in the sun, moves ever close to me.
Taking steps so gently, she  takes my hand and leads me to the water's frigid shore.
So long ago.

So long  ago.  So long ago.

Oh, sweet vision are you  mortal just like me?
Or  have you come here just to take my  soul?-

We slept beneath the stars, washed by cooling desert winds.
Till the moon began to fade.
A  night of perfumed love, beguiling in a mystic way.
The  sands became a grove, and faded with the dawn.

So long ago.  So long ago.

Oh, sweet vision are you mortal just like me?
Why have you left me here? Why did you leave my soul?
            Take me  with you.

I think it's so sad that today's music makers are so besotted with rap! It's not enough that the rappers take the hooks from someone else's hard work, but singers feel the need to get some waz to rap where once upon a time you'd have a solo.
I do remember an article that said that by the year 1999 (or so) all available tunes would be used up....obviously garbage as proved above.

Today's music is all plastic, created on computers by the "producer" who adds a voice to get the human touch. but the voices are so over recorded with effects that they end up un-listenable (to me).

I have always been a heavy metal fan, and enjoy most of the names listed above, though you tend to feel that maybe most should have done the right thing and retired after 10 years? then just reformed after 2-3 years just to release a new album and do a short tour. Have Zeppelin got it right?

glad to be of assistance. but this does stand for any posts that i or the comunity in general feel undermines any of the guides i have stated above. i am always happy to answer any questions regarding guidelines or anything else that i may be able to help with.

by the way, this IS a music site, but poems (of any kind) may be entered here. they may at a later date be finnished off with a melody by the writer or a composer who has been inspired by the poem. or allowed to stand as a work of art in their own write...scuse the pun
