Evening all,

So I've been thinking about songwriting motivation. This really stems from thinking about playing gigs, hopefully in the future (soon) when I can work up the nerve.....

However, I worry that my own songs are all a bit gloomy and would maybe set a bit of a depressing theme. Now, to qualify this, I'd consider myself quite an upbeat fellow, cheery, some might say. However it just so happens that when I sit down to write a song, more often than not I end up writing about something close to my heart. as it is, I've not been fortunate enough to have kids etc yet so the major events in my life to date are alas, fairly sombre moments, usually involving some form of loss.

I'd be happy to sit and write a foot stomping cheery tune but as it goes, I find my songs work better when they're from the heart, and it seems whilst I'm pretty chipper, my old ticker may be a bit of a morbid fellow and the songs tend to be more ballad-y tunes.

Anyone got any advice for how to get away from this? How do you guys write, is it always from the heart and if not, how do you manage to keep your direction when writing a purely fictional tune??

Cheers,
Mark

same thing happens to me. I find it helps if you can take something thats serious and try to make light of it, in a lyrical way, with something a little up beat. Take something you know and speed it up.Think good times and not bad

I have just reported this to the Oxford English Dictionary. It has been accepted as the first proof of irony in the USA !

As finders fee I get a free ticket to Disneyland.

Pretty nice song there Phil, only is it me or are the words hard to see? Its like there was words put on top of other words and I cant make them out.

Great song strans, I do believe they get better every time. I really like the words.

I think if you don't get emotional about it then your hearts not really into it. I get emotional singing Folsom Prison. I can barely get through that song. I cried when Kurt Cobain died and when Johny died. I probably loose my mind when John Prine goes.

In high school, I played drums in a dixieland band for a Christmas gig at Folsom prison. It was kinda scary.
The inmates liked us but they were allowed to come up on stage and talk to us.
This big scary guy wanted to play my drums and I was not about to say no. He sat down and put his foot on top of my bass drum and pounded 'til his hearts content. Nobody said anything to him including me. I just smiled and nodded until he got down.

That must have been crazy!!! Was it the same area Jonny Cash played?

Goes the same for me. I find listening to new music helps. Or going and watching live music. Saw The Last to Know last night so feeling a bit inspired

Thanks you guys, that was awesome. My grandma just gave a whole bunch of old Chet Atkins records. I dont think she knew what she had, she just wanted to give them to somebody who would appreciate them

I think it's much easier to show using a keyboard, where you can break things down into white keys and black keys, to demonstrate how the key signature and the "number of sharps/flats" all make sense.  The fretboard can be a frightening thing sometimes!

I absolutely agree with you and thanks for that feedback:).

I didn't do that because I was thinking this is a guitar forum and didn't want to confuse anyone with a different kind of instrument.

jerome.oneil Do you think I should add a piano diagram to?

Also, I was thinking of creating the lessons with the learning objective stated up front so we can all give feedback and know exactly what the lesson is actually about.  I think this would be very helpful, but I would like to hear what others think.  This would be a way to have a standard, but this is just IMHO.

I am happy that we are all getting along not to mention I am learning how to communicate effectively in a forum.

This could have gotton much uglier, but we all did the rite thing smile.

Thanks Steve

I think everyone had the best intentions, now on with the lesson!!

Yeah hearing Nirvana is what got me wanting to play.
Probably just the way Kurt played, the rawness of it. It was so real.
I wanted to play guitar so bad but I kept it a secret. lol.
Then I just found a guitar in my Dad's garage and the first thing I taught myself was the intro to Come as You Are.
Almost a year later and I'm still learning Nirvana. Aneurysm is the latest.

Ive said before, their the sole reason I picked up a guitar. Kurt never wrote a bad song as far as I'm concerned. Dave Grohl is one of the best drummers out there. I wish he would have stuck to drums. Your story of how you started playing sounds alot like mine.
I found an old guitar in the rafters of our garage and saved my lunch money for weeks to buy a set of strings. Begged my mom to take me to the "hippie" store to buy them. and it was on from there.

Hah...the prisons here in the US are so comfortable that some homeless people commit crimes so that they can have a bed, tv and guaranteed 3 meals a day.

It's insane...since when did prison become someplace people aspired to go to!??!?

=p

No offense, but have you ever been to prison? Its not a picnic. There's a difference between county and real prison. I have seen homeless people do that but in a real prison its just not possible. I think giving inmates something constructive to do is a great idea. Again I mean no offense.
