Hi Phil,

In my opinion the instrument you use is the one that you feel most comfortable with, be it guitar, piano, tin whistle or what have you. However the most important thing is your brain. You know without playing any instrument which notes go with which chords and what chords follow another smoothly for the effect that you want.

I generally write the lyrics and then the chords and then play my guitar or use a programme called Band-in-a-Box to write a backing track. Some fine tuning and alteration may take place then but most of it is done beforehand.

Others I am sure work differently but that is my way.

Thank you Phil,

I don't know if you realise how apt your remarks are. Sir Cliff's Portuguese villa and vinyard are less than 20 kms from me.

The main functions of a Moderator are to keep an eye on the postings to make sure that spam is not getting through and deleting it if it does appear. Moving posts that get put in the wrong section of the forum, or as you know at the moment we are asking the person to move it themselves as this function is not operating correctly yet. And I suppose just making sure that things go smoothly.

A Moderater can edit, delete or block any posting in his/her section however I think that these functions will rarely be used. If any of my more experiences collegues want to add something or pass comment here please feel free.

I became a Moderator by invitation, it was not a position I sought, although I am more than pleased to be able to help Chordie run smoothly as most of my PC time is spent here. Although I will never meet them I have made many new friends since I became a member of this site.

Hi Jeff,

You have written another good song. Mind you I hate the Aadd9, it is a chord I always struggle with and unfortunately the song does need it so I had to persevere. As judgement for using such a difficult chord to play I think you should now record it. (I am at it again) lol.

Thank you,

Roger

Hi Phil,

Most of the regular contibutors the the songwriting section know that it is my mission to persuade, cajole or bully songwriters into performing their own works, whether it be openly in the forum or behind the scenes in private e-mails. Everyone who posts a song here will tell you that they are always in danger of me trying to get them to record it. Hey I have even hijacked some of the songs and recorded them myself.

Several Chordians now have their songs on the Internet. Some have put their initial works on Friends of Chordie, a MySpace site that I keep especially and exclusively for Chordie members to use, and several now have there own MySpace. It is planned that eventually there will be a companion site to Chordie called Chordshare where songs can be posted at which time FoC will become redundant.

Take care,

Roger

Hello Endolas, and welcome to Chordie. I am very taken with this song, the chord sequence is great, I played it slow and fingerpicked the chords, it flows well. Like Jeff I feel that it should be a little longer, maybe a chorus would do the trick.

As Jeff indicated, cause he knows me well, it would be very nice to hear your recording of this song. However well, or bad, we perform it we will only know how you intended it to be by hearing your version. As you are new to the forum you may not know but my mission here is to persuade, cajole, bully or just wear down by persistence and get everyone to record their songs for us to hear. So far I have been very successfull although I am still working on Badeye, so be warned lol

Thank you,

Roger

Hello Lidovic,

Welcome to Chordie. I will answer the easy question first. With tabs the '0' indicates that the string is played open i.e. without being pressed at any fret.

I would suggest that you start learning three chords, G, C and D. There are a multitude of songs that can be played with these chords and if you go to the Absolute Beginners songbooks you are bound to find some that you know.

It is hard work learning to play, do not expect it to come easy and do not think that you will be playing all your favourite songs in a couple of weeks. If you read through other threads concerning learning to play you will see the words, practice, practice and even more practice mentioned over and over. This is because it is the repetition that gets your fingers to lock in the right postion to play a chord without having to think about it.

Keep coming back here you will get all the help and encouragement you need. Different people will have different views on how things should be done and you will be able to pick and choose which way you want to go.

Hi Lena,

Thank you for the tip but writing a song for a charming lady is an honour and a pleasure, however it would be a bit of a strain trying to find different variations of the same theme if I made the same mistake repeatedly.

I have therefore now got a calculator at the side of my PC and a big notice not to use it unless I have had less than three wee drams.

Take care,

Roger

Thanks Mark,

You obviously appreciate the care I need to take with my health at my age. By the way my new zimmer frame has wheels on the front. I does not make me any faster but I do fall down more gracefuly lol

Hi Igor_Ivanovski85,

Reading through this thread I do not think it should be removed. There is a valuable lesson to be learnt here and it is something that any of us, however experienced, could fall foul to.

Thank you for raising the query and for the explanation.

Thank you friends for those kind words of encouragement and for the truthful ones too. Actually it as I who invented the sound waves James and you are right also Mike as I  came close to being burnt at the stake once for using my 5th fret.

Joking apart, as this is such a friendly, well behaved place I am sure that there will be very little for me to do.

Hey Badeye,

Sounds like fun, if I were a little closer perhaps I would gatecrash, but it is rather a long hike from Portugal. Mind you the Moosehead and music sound tempting.........

Hello Larson,

The only question that is stupid is the one that is not asked. To ask is to find out, not to ask is to remain in ignorance. There, that is my philosophy for the day.

I assume you know that the six lines are your 6 strings. The numbers then indicate which fret you play that string on. 0 = open, 2= 2nd fret.

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately I have not been able to listen to "Now Teach Us" as I can only get the first 20 seconds to play. My modem is on a 'go slow' at the moment and that may be the reason so I will try again later.

However I did give it a blast and a warble myself (well the bits where you have the chords with the lyrics) and I liked what I heard. I will comment again later when I have been able to listen to your recording.

Thank you,

Roger

Hey James,

I have just given this a blast and it's a fun little number you have there, a great one to play by fingerpicking. The only problem I had was I found myself automatically playing a G instead of a C at the end of the chorus. I will 'badeye' it and see if I can get it right this time.

Hi Kori,

I can only second James's suggestions here. Audacity is a very good and free programme for recording and you want to get the best quality microphone that you can. If you want a free programme to convert wave to MP3 for uploading go to: http://www.mp3-converter.com/ and try DBPowerAmp.

If you do decide to use the studio for your first recording session it will give you the best insight into how things are done and will be of great beneift when you later record on your own.

Good luck,

Roger

Hello HeatherAB,

The loss of tone after putting lighter coated strings on may be a characteristic of the strings. The buzzing however is different and I think can be corrected.

There will be less tension with the lighter strings causing the neck to arch back slightly which will leave the strings closer to the frets and hence cause the buzzing. This can be adjusted, although it is not the job for an amateur, so another chat with the guy at your music store will no doubt reveal a competent technician for the job.

Hello Dave,

You first need to look at the age group of the places you intend to perform in and play covers of songs that they will know and can sing along to.

Playing in a restaurant is slightly different to bars, whilst people are eating softer numbers go down better but after you can crank it up and get people dancing. In a bar I think it is better to hit them with some well known lively music to start, you can mellow it later and then get rocking for the end.

Please let us know how it works out for you,

Break a leg,

Roger

Congratulations Chordie,

And of course Per for his insight in creating such a wonderful place for musicians from all over the world to meet, make new friends and get answers to queries.

I too am pleased to be a member of Chordie and even more pleased that I eventually decided to take the plunge and enter into the forum. I have learned plenty and, I hope, given some help to others by participating.

Hi Kori,

Wow, that is some song for a first attemp, well done.

I am in dissagreement with Phil's initial statement about needing to know the melody to play a new song. The absolute beauty of seeing new songs here with just the chords is that you do not have the melody and you make up your own as you go along. I know, as I am sure do most others, which notes I can sing to a given chord and although it may end up completey different to how the composer intended it, you put your own stamp on it.

A little while ago both Ken and I independantly recorded and uploaded James's "So Vivid" and two completely different songs appeared and I bet they were both different to how James plays it. This is what makes this section of the forum so interesting and exciting.

That being said it is alway great to hear the composer's version of their song so how about it? Can we persuade, cajole or bully you into recording this for us all to hear?

Thank you,

Roger

Thank you,

After recieving a private message from the charming Lena I now know that I am forgiven so I can once again sleep easy at nights.

As for the song Lena , I have given it to you, so it is yours to do with what you like. (I will re-record it later when I have shaken off this cold and get rid of the glitch at the end of the intro).

Hi there andyclarke,

As Chordie is a search engine there are no songs actually here apart from the original songs written by members in the Songwriters section.

There are various legal reasons why Chordie cannot host copywrite material. If you can get it posted elsewhere on the Internet it can then be available to Chordie. There is information in the Resources section to help.

Congratulations Mike to you and your bride,

Maybe not the song to sing at the reception but after, when you two are alone, it will probably go down very well.

I struggled a bit with this one, hardly surprising considering the difference in our ages and musical tastes, but after the fourth run through I began to get into it.

Thank you,

Roger

Hi Jeff,

It is rather strange that James should liken you to a troubador as the same thought had passed my mind earlier today. Although in my vision, Sir James was the knight with his trusty keyboard righting all the wrongs, I was the Jester as I get everything round my neck, Lord Per was our master, Ken was the tax collector as the Scottish are always canny with cash, and Old Doll was the beautiful princess.

Anyway enough of my daydreaming and back to the reality of your song. It is sad that the team is breaking up and I am sure your presence has had a very positive influence on the young ladies lives. My feeling is that you should record this to CD and give one to each of them as a reminder of their days in the team.

The young ladies, I am sure, will be proud of the song you have written for them.

Hi James,

With only three chords this is a very simple song for anyone to enjoy and there is something very compelling about it. Although maybe not the song for your beloved on Mothers Day it does have a lovely lyric and I like it immensely.

Thank you,

Roger

Hi Rooster3,

If you have no place to upload it you can easily open a MySpace slot or if you want it on "Friends of Chordie" let me know and I will put it there for you.

There are some pitfalls opening a MySpace slot for uploading music. Make sure that you sign up as an artist and not anything else and you should be OK.
