Okay, got my axe back.
Took it in to that shop and they changed the strings in like 5 minutes...literally. Tuned it up and everything.

They now claimed that I did give them the strings from my guitar case and that they used them...but Ernie Ball's manufacturing process must have been off and the wrong gauge strings were packed into the package for the 10's.

YEAH RIGHT!!!

These guys wouldn't admit that they messed up even when the evidence was staring them in the face. I took the old strings and compared each one to the PROPER strings and sure enough, they were ALL THICKER!!

Well Russell, I have no one to blame but myself for not doing the work myself. If I had just had a little free time I could have wired in the pickup myself. It comes with diagrams and besides, it would have been soldered in the same way the previous one was. I know how to solder very well and could have done it myself. I just didn't have enough free time to work on it without interruption from the family. It's been the same way with a lot of things lately. I used to change my own oil and do all my own maintenance on the car but since I got married and had a kid time just dropped to zero...

I guess that's growing up for ya...more like growing invalid. Now I have very little choice besides paying someone to do what I know I am capable of because I don't have time....

The thing I dont undestand is why you had to supply them with a brand new set of strings to begin with? if all they were doing was installing a pickup they could have used the old set to test to see if the pickup worked if you would have asked that question they might have had to come up with the restringing fee charge or at least informed you of the charge even if they were putting the old ones back smile

Russel, you're completely right. Every Pickup-changing tutorial I saw on the net last night showed that you didn't even have to take the strings off....just slack them and move them out of the way. Not ONE of the tutorials changed the strings!

Well, I called and spoke to the manager.

Basically, he said that they gave me a deal on the pup installation ($25.00) since I bought and paid for the installation the same day.
He said that I should have been told about the string installation charge but apologized for not having that done. (Made no offer of cost refunding...)

He also said that he will put on a new set of strings (10's)  free of charge when I come back in.

The store is Make N Music in Frederick, MD.  I'm beginning to get a strong feeling that this place is the "Car Dealership" of local guitar stores. And we all know how evil car dealerships are...

I recently got my guitar back from having a pup installed. They said that I needed to supply them with a set of Ernie Ball 10s to put on the guitar after the work was done. So I gave them my spare set with the guitar and pup to be installed.

When I picked up the guitar 15 hours later, they handed me my gear and told me that the total was 35 dollars. I looked at them bewildered since I PAID for everything upfront before the work started. The guy at the counter gave me some lame excuse that there was a charge for putting the new strings on and tried to bs his way around it. I gave him the hand and just told him to charge the card so I could get out of there.

I felt that was intentionally shady and it rubbed me wrong.

Now when I got the guitar back I knew that something was different.
It was confirmed today while playing along with some Albert King tunes at lunch...

I blew my high-e string and went to replace it with a B-String leftover from a previous set of Ernie Ball 10's until I could get home and replace the whole set.  When I put the B-string on the high-e slot I noticed that the one I put on was bigger/thicker than the B-string that the shop put on!

The B-String that I put on is about the same size as the G-string that the shop put on...meaning that they put 9's on my guitar!!

Now for shadyness part two.....

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SET OF 10'S THAT THEY SAID I HAD TO GIVE THEM WHEN I DROPPED OFF THE GUITAR!?!?!?!

Frickin swindling b@$&@rds!!

Should I go back and tear the manager a new hole or just never buy there again?

Multi-effects pedals help a lot!
They can keep you from buying expensive individual pedals and give you a sample of what sounds you would like all in one device.
If this one has drum tracks and a metronome, it will help you with your timing greatly!

I have a KORG PX-4D multi-effects unit and I use that for all of my looping, timing and strumming practice.

1. The new neck is much more sensitive to truss rod adjustment. I didn't have to wait 30 minutes between adjustments. It was more like 5. The frets on the new neck are taller and much more effective for my thinner fingers. When I press down on the strings, none of the strings are muffled. Fingerstyle or chords come out perfectly without and dead strings! The new neck also doesn't fret-out after the 18th fret like the old neck. The finish on the new neck is also a LOT smoother/faster and the size of the neck is consistent from the headstock to the heel! It fits my hand sooooooo perfectly!!! I transferred my locking tuners and my graph-tec nut to the new neck as well. Had to do some drilling but all went well.

2. The new Seymour Duncan sh-4 pickup....
OMG...I can't describe how alive this pickup has made my guitar. First, this pickup is like a tube-amp in your guitar. No, wait, its like the boss dyna drive pedal inside your guitar. By that, I mean that the pickup is dynamically sensitive to your picking! Pick soft...you have a normal sound. The harder you pick, the more breakup/distortion you get from the pickup! I have never experienced this before. Its so amazing! The awesome thing about the sh-4 is that at the 3/4 point on my volume control and up, it seems to control the amount of distortion of the pickup as the volume seems to max out at the 3/4 point. Its awesome and is like having a separate gain control in addition to my pedals and amp! I have gotten some STP and foo fighters tones so far. Marked them down in my notepad for later hehe..,
And the sustain! Oh my goodness the sustain! Notes ring so clearly and long now. I can do a Hendrix style grip and hit the low E string and then do chordal or lead work without the E string's note decaying before I finish. The other kewl thing is that I can now do pinch harmonics sooooo easy. Before I could get the squealie to happen once every 10 tries. Now I can get it EVERY...SINGLE....TIME!! Its amazing!! I was playing every zakk wylde riff I could copy off of youtube earlier today.
Oh! The pickup matches the Kent Armstrong pup that's in the neck on my '51 WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the GFS pup that was in the bridge before. Now the outputs are more even. The sh-4 just barely comes out over the KA pup and gives the middle position that warm quack with a little growl on the high end. Splitting the bridge pup in the middle position gives a tone that is like baby skin wrapped in velvet wrapped in microfiber Liz Claiborne cloth. Its just sweet!

I have only tested the new setup with my line-6 spider 112 so far (headphone capability hehe) cause the wife was home. I will have more to report tomorrow after church and some videos on Monday night.

I can't wait to transfer my gear over to it tonight and test it out.
It already fits my hand waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the neck that was on the guitar when I bought it.

I just dropped some bills on one of these. It's getting installed in the guitar as we speak, should be ready by tomorrow.

It's a Seymour Duncan JB SH-4...the same bridge pickup that Eddie Van Halen, Adam Jones and various other professional rockers use.
I'm dying to play with this thing...OMG...this is going to give me that crunch that I've been searching for that I haven't been able to get from effect pedals. Heck, after I get this installed I can probably use my DS-1 again without having to worry about modding it. I can finally give my BD-2 a break lol...

But...in case the DS-1 still sucks tone, I've got my eye on one of these...

The VOX SATCHURATOR!!!!
I tried this pedal out in the store and it's got great tone, lots of low end too and none of that shrilly ear-splitting thin distortion. This pedal actually does distortion and overdrive quite well. I may get it and sell both my boss pedals...lol.

Well, I can't wait to post a video of the sounds of the JB SH-4 on my youtube page.

Seersha,

I am touched by your story and as a christian, appalled. Let me tell you something, the bible says to try the spirit by the spirit. Not everyone who calls themselves "Christian" are so. It sounds like that church you got hurt at were full of "AINTS"...not "SAINTS".

First and foremost, find yourself a true bible preaching church that only preaches the word and not anyone's interpretation of it. Also, put forth an effort to build a relationship with Jesus for yourself. Once you have a relationship with Him he will lead, guide and direct your path and put the people you need in your life...and also take those that don't need to be in your life out! (not kill em but just move em...hehe). I don't know what your denomination is but I'm COGIC (church of God in Christ) and it's the most pure holiness denomination I've encountered. I've tried baptist, catholic and athiesm and they all left me vacant.

Next, don't give up on your guitar! I also put down guitar after a series of bad people entered my life and took my focus off of my instrument. Thankfully, after getting saved and letting God lead the way, he put the people I needed back in my life that would encourage, uplift and help me get to where I need to be. As long as you keep leaning on Him, you won't be led astray.

Also, stick around here and learn as much from the positive people we have here on Chordie. It's part of how I got back into the guitar game and I'm doing great and learning more and more everyday!

God bless,

I'm not sure why folks keep saying "annual" and "next year."  I don't see any reason we can't have things like this more often than a year, especially if we're willing to picnic or whatever.  I think it might be fun to pick a park, through up a 10x10 shelter, let the kids play nearby and have a little fun.  I'm centrally located.  It takes each of the others about 1/2 hour drive to get here.  That's nothing.  I've driven three hours to fish, found the water too rough to handle, turned around and come home and considered it a good day.

Amen to that!!
I'd be willing to do this as often as time and opportunity will allow.
A whole year between is way way too long. Plus, playing guitar with others is enough fun that I couldn't see doing it once a year max.

It's all in practicing...

For example, today I practiced a G-B power chord riff that just repeated over and over.
It's not a song, but I want to make sure I get that "chunka-chunka" sound and my timing down perfectly before I try to apply it to a song.

Try out different patterns in your efforts to get your strumming solid. Just keep at it until it's second nature.
It will come to you in time...if you put in the time.
My strumming took almost a year to get right for playing on my acoustic.
