Milkdup if you can provide the title of the song and a link to the page on chordie where the song is it would be helpful, there are several musicians on chordie who can provide the strumming patterns including myself keep in mind to select songs that you know how to play the chords in the song too smile

I agree with Roger and Southpaw keep at it,try and find songs you enjoy singing also seek help from the choir director of your church ask if he is willing to help you a few minutes a week (it never hurts to ask) and I will offer my help anytime with your recording and offer suggestions but never get the idea in your head you cant sing, just sing with the voice thats within you and if they throw vegetables like Southpaw said ask for your favorite lol mine is avacado but its really expensive and if they throw them make sure there ripe and learn to duck lol another suggestion is to submit your lyrics and a rough recording of the melodie and request some help in this forum for singers there is a special page with listings of singers, musicians, and recording gear so use it if you wish(recomended) someone will help you I can promiss that smile

Ark what I was refering to was the finished recording because once its mastered there is no going back to a "do over" as far as retakes if there needed yes I can do them but I really dont think it will be necessary I think one take will be all I need unless some physical malady strikes my fingers (not to likely) and thanks for your best wishes Russ smile

I'm curious here Russ is there only to be one stab at recording and no chance for a retake?
or am i missing the point so to speak and the general aim is a one off warts and all solo.
Anyway good luck with your session...

Roger I think Mr.Murphy has invaded my vista puter the fan still makes a little groan when I fire it up,I took it apart and cleaned all the fans and its running a lot quieter but I may need to replace the fan unit so I wrote down the part number and I'm searching for a replacement and I hope Murphy postpones his unwelcome visit to your residence and my session smile

'Break a Leg' on Thursday and I will invite 'Murphy' round to mine for the day. He has been dogging me lately anyway so having another day with him won't make much difference.

Thanks Doug I have a feeling everything will come out fine and I will post a sign of the door of the studio "no Murphy's allowed" and I will film this session and upload the results and let you know how it all turned out smile

We will keep our fingers and toes crossed for you on Thursday that old man "Murphy" stays away from the studio.  But now that guy who narrates all the movie trailers has passed away, (The Voice) there is room in the world for another "one take wonder"....  could be you!

Hope you have a good time and look forward as usual to your reflections on the whole process.

Take Care;  Doug

I referred to the note to the right of the slash as the "root" this is only my way of saying it is the lowest note played in the chord sorry if i misled you, in the key of G, F# is the seventh tone of the G major scale. G Major is a triad of G B D but you can place the notes in any order, so you could express it as G/D or G/B its still a G chord because the note to the left of the slash is the root or tonic.or the 1st smile

All chords that have a / such as the Gmaj7/E or G/F# simply mean that the note to the right of the slash is the root of the chord in the chords you give they would it seems be passing chords or step down a more common slash chord is D/F# smile

pb12mm wrote:

I am learning a few new songs and I have a question about how to read certain chords.  Here are some examples.

Gmaj7/E
Bm/D
G/F#

I do know that the G/F# works as a step down from G to Em, but is it that why everytime it is on all songs?

Are all of these step down or up notes?

Is the Gmaj7 the chord but played from the E string?

Is the Bm/D the same, a Bm chord, played from the D string?

Any help would be appreciated.  I am just starting on guitar and Iam haveing some good success with music that just has the chords listed, then I came across these.

Thanks in advance.

Pete
