These posts got lost during the change over to the new server as did several others at about this time. Scrimmy82 had bought a new guitar and was asking what the allen key was for that came with it. My reply was that it was to adjust the truss rod but suggested that it was safer not to attempt it.

Roger

It all depends, what kind of guitar did he buy, electric or acoustic. If it is acoustic Roger is correct in what it's for and his advice if your not experienced don't do it yourself.  If its an electric there useally is two or three, one to adjust the truss rod in the neck, the other to adjust the bridge saddle height and or if you have a locking nut so you can change the strings.

I buy strings by the dozen (I have 13 guitars right now) so I change them quite often on one guitar or another. I usually find my brand of choice on sale and buy a box or two, both acoustic & electric strings.

Thanks , I appreciate it , I am replacing them so am not concerned about the old knobs, just didn't want to damage the pot shaft, by the way does Gibson glue them on, can't understand why they are on so tight....I'm used to replacing Fender Tele knobs, spoiled I guess...anyway , Thanks again...FiveO

No the knobs for a gibson usually are what are called high hats (because they look like a high hat cymbal) and the straight one's are called speed knobs because you can wrap your pinky finger around them and turn them fast. They have a smaller hole than the fender high hat knobs so when pressed on they are tighter (like a gorillia put them on).

Three ways to get them off:

#1, Stewart & Mc Donald sells a special designed knob puller that as you put the slotted fork type bracket on the bottom of the knob the top has like a bolt that pushes up the knob of the knural of the shaft of the pot.

#2, Put the end of your tee shirt around the bottom of the knob and twist the tee shirt end until you can' t twist any more. Than proceed to pull up the tee shirt end until the knob comes off the pot shaft. (it's hard alot of times they don't come off easy).

#3, And I don't recommend this if you are not going to replace the knobs. Get a piece of flat plastic( like an old pick guard or a piece of a waste basket) place on the guitar. With a flathead screw driver pry up the knob until it losens and take off the knob. If you do not have a thick enough piece of plastic you will put a dent on your Paul's top. Also the bottom of the knobs get chewed.

Good luck.

gitaardocphil,

The original flying "V's" and Explorers were made of korina wood (african black and or white limba) I don't know what the finger board wood was.  The new bodies if are made with mahogany woods have a darker tone compared to swamp ash or alder wood which has a briter tone. The korina has a tone between the two previously mentioned woods. The rosewood finger board would articulate more highs than the ebony finger board. With the eletronics being the same the only difference of the three guitars you described are the finger boards and for a preslotted finger board rose wood goes about $19.00, and ebony goes for about $29.00 american.

So the difference in pricing is probly going to be in the finish, paint, natural or exotic wood top dyed. Also the hardware used is it gold, black or chrome. Other than that there should not be that much price difference unless as you said one of the guitars is an ressiue. Then your paying for marketing.

im not big when i comes to brand names, but simply putting your acoustic through a PA system givesa great sound and seeing as how you have just got yourself a load of new mic's then try that

Dave

There are two answers to your question Gitaardocphil and also the same goes fore the reply by David Kelly:

#1 As suggested by D.K. you can run your guitar through the board (p.a. mixer) two ways open mike which also may pick up any unwanted noise not only from your guitar.

#2 You can still run your acoustic guitar with pickups through the board straight (pluged just like you plug your mike) and get your sound mixed there.

There is also a D-tar mama bear guitar preamp that cleans the signal from your guitar into your amp giving you a natural acoustic sound. Check them out at www.seymourduncan.com their the parent company of D-tar.

Before you buy the Melody maker check out a Michael Kelly Patriot Q series guitar. For $ 45.00 american more you get more guitar for your money. They are set neck not bolt on type, a quilted maple top with bindings and abloney inlays. The pickups are humbuckers but are wired for split coil so you can get the single coil pickup sound. That's my just a suggestion you'll have to play both side by side to make the comparison. Check out the Michael Kelly website
(www.michaelkellyguitars.com) for the guitar specs.

Good luck.

I haven't played through one but I have played through tube amps. Mainly Fenders, 15 watt Champ, 40 watt Bandmaster, and my current 60 watt DeVille with 4' 10's (4, 10 inch speakers) so I agree on the tube amp sound choice.  Epiphone also puts out a small watt tube amp, for a while they were selling the heads at the Guitar center for $100.00 american don't know how they sound though. Do a search on the Epiphone amps and the Peaveys and find out what owners of both think.

Good Luck.

The one your comfortable and happy playing. Everyone has opinions on what is best but they might not fill your needs. Play as many ones as you can before you choose and then play them again. You'll know when you find the one you can't put down.

i think it's just coincidence that people like cobain, morrison, joplin, bolan and hendrix all went around the 27 mark. i think it's just down to the style of their lives - the drugs and the pressure

no hendrix OD ed on some type of drugs

Well you asked.

B-Band UST saddle pickup, AST under sound board pickup and A2 preamp plus a velcro battery box.

All can be installed with minimal work done on the guitar. The only thing that would change is that if you have a press in end pin it would be hogged out to install the preamp from the inside of the guitar.

This would also act as your input jack and strap pin. The UST fits under your saddle and may need shimming but a qualified luither or guitar tech can do that. The AST is basically a ribbon type (with adhesive)piezio pickup that is taped (stuck on) the underside of the bridge on your sound board.

Get it set up to the gauge strings you like to play also and stick to them otherwise lighter gauges will result in string buzz.

I have been looking at a D-TAR MAMA BEAR to play through. Its a preamp to get the original guitar sound from an amplified guitar. Check them out on the Seymore Duncan website they are part of that company.

Good luck.

The problem I have is a lack of volume. I have considered buying a guitar specific jack to see if that makes a difference vs. a generic mono jack. Just not sure I want to spend the time and effort...the $4 for the part is not an issue.
</td></tr></table>

Then the issue is not the input jack.  It's the pickups, The higher the "k" value, the higher the output. What brand of guitar are they in and are they stock. If it is a low end guitar chances are the pickups are junk. That's not to say that all lowend guitars have crap pickups. But I'd bet most of the bunch are dogs. You can put a treble gain and midrange boost but by the time you pay for the parts and labor for an install you can but a good set of high output pickups.
