lol.... maybe this came across the wrong way. First off let me say I like Alan Jackson, and I do agree that what the music has become is disgusting, and that that was actually a really good song BUT, the choice of words is what bothers me.
99% of it is absolutely correct.... but first of all there aren't usually rock and roll guitars (and here i must emphasize that rock and roll, is NOT the same as metal, hard rock, punk rock) in boy bands.
Some of the best country music has a great electric guitar player somewhere in there, and a nice drum beat too, so even if this song comes off as sounding too angry, all I'm trying to say is lets point the finger at the industry that let that happen, and the funny boy bands, NOT the instrument that helped define our music , and when I say that I don't mean Kieth Urban, I'm talking 'Cephus and Waylon smile
I'm sure the man that originally wrote the song actually has the same ideas about music as I do, I'm disgusted by most of the crap that comes on the radio these days, this is just another point of view on the same subject.... kind of like Kitty Wells' 'It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels'
So no hard feelings??

Is it like 'swing low sweet chariot, comin' for to carry me home'.... thats a hymn. Don't know that band but if thats the song I could probly find the chords

Thats paradise city by Guns 'N' Roses, its on the 'appetite for destruction' album, which was very good by the way.

'take me down to the paradise city,
where the grass is green and the girls are    pretty Oh won't you please take me home....'

You ever heard Sweet Child of Mine? Another very good song from the same people.

i usually end up with either

A- lyrycs and no chords

or

B- chords and no lyrycs

Sometimes I find two that work together and thats always nice, but most of the time they sit dormant for months and months before the right music or words comes along.
The main thing I would emphasize is WRITE ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW.  Life experiences, Professions, hobbies, Good advice somebody gave you, something you've lived, experienced, investigated, something that comes natural to you. And don't force it.....
On the other hand I like to try and write something pretty regular just for the practice with rhyming and setting up structures and all that. Sometimes its fun to just pick the most random topic you can think of and try to write a song about it....
One time my topic was 'zebras', and I ended up writing a story song about the stupidity of racial extremes, and it was about Jesse Jackson vs. The White Supremacists on the subject of is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black. Both wanted it to be thier color.... wish Ida kept that one actually it was pretty funny.

To whomever this song was adressed to:
I have to throw in, that if the music is good enough, even half descent lyrycs can be acceptable. So work on being an awesome player and let the words take back seat smile

To Old Doll:
Nice song, and good advice. I like this line

dont fret cry or rattle
this could be worse
you could be known
As Sleepless In Seattle.

But [G7]just because it's history, don't [C7]mean it's in the [D7]past

That says a mouthful right there.
It was funny reading your ideas for what it oughta sound like, mainly because I'm the kind to do that too. I can hear solos and six or seven piece bands, harmonica parts or even somebody playing the spoons. I'll even have visions of really awesome famous people singing my songs, with somebody like SRV playing blues riffs over 'em and huge sold out crowds...... so here's to getting too far ahead of ourselves with songwriting lol

Well here's some good Hank Williams ones to look for, if you need titles:

You Win Again

The Lost Highway

Ramblin' Man

Jambalaya

Move it On Over

He's actually a good writer, and if you can ever get a hold of something besides 'Hey Good Lookin' (which is a good song, not knocking it by the way but its kind of like AC/DC and 'highway to hell', just because you know that song doesn't really mean you know anything at all about the bad). "Weary blues from waitin'" "The Lost Highway" "I heard that Lonesome Whistle"... just some of my favs.
Its the 'legend of Hank Williams that really makes him such an icon (he was famous, but nearly as much as now untill he died) He was born in Alabama with spinebifeda, learned to play guitar from an old blues player name Rufus Payne, AKA 'tee-tot', so he had an appreciation for the style. He married Ms. Audry, and had a son, but partly because of his back pains, and the mysterious heart ache (no-one really knows WHO he was singing about in all them sad songs) he took to drinking, got addicted to his pain medicine, and died in the back of his cadillac on the way back to montgomery after an unsuccesful surgery. Long before he ever  became 'famous' he did tours all over the south with his band 'The Driftin' Cowboys', and them coming to town was a pretty big deal back in the day. He also had an alter ego fo sorts called Luke the Drifter under which (in great contrast with the honky tonkin' songs he wrote as Hank Williams) he wrote and sang a long list of gospel songs.
Because of his short life and unexpected death, the great contradictions of his character, and the ramblin' man persona, he became sort of a tall tale type hero. Someone once said that 'The legend far exceeded the man', but in spite of all that he was a good writer and singer.....
And anyway I've babbled way too long, but maybe that satisfied some curiosity. lm Srry for it being so lengthy, I'm sure you weren't THAT interested lol

I am a country music fan, and as such I'll admit that it aint quite what it used to be. George Strait and Alan Jackson wrote a song about how they'd took out the steel guitars and fiddles, and 'tore the heart and soul' out of the music.... most of what they said i could agree with untill they came to the part about how electric guitars were ruining country music.
This ticks me off, because, well its just a really stupid statement when you look at the music and see all the different styles that are incorporated into it. So here is Last Rebel's response to the song,

Anyway I heard it on the radio and got all ticked off again so i wrote a song about it lol

okay here's the gameplan so far: having taken in the greatly appreciated advice i have something to work with.....

The verse that James liked opens it up,

The 'rednecks get the blues' verse as chorus

Another verse (which I have yet to write) following the idea of the first verse (as James reccomended)

And then somewhere I'll slip in what WAS the first part of the chorus as an additional verse.

I f I have time I'll work on it tonight and be sure to post a completed version, (hopefully with some chords) within the next week or so. Thanks so much for the help yall, I think we might have this one on the right track

haha, old crow medicine show, interesting band... i'd heard of them but not real familiar with em. Love thier sound its bluegrassy but it has that swampy guitar sound too.
I've talked to ppl who want me to write an self help book because of my 'down-home' advice. What can I say? I had good mentors smile

roger,
like i said earlier, i didnt have the chords written down so i had to post them from memory, so they weren't perfect. The verses are, but the chorus thing wasn't right i dont think. The way you play it works just fine with the rest of the song because i intentionally made it sound a little different from the other parts.

I think I actually had it like this:
               C                                         G
Well we   spend our whole live goin' nowhere
                                                            D
When somewhere's where we wanna be
G                        C
I aint lookin' for nuthin

         G        D                                 G
But I guess nuthin was lookin' for me.....

anwyay theres different ways you could do it i guess. Thanks to all of yall for the suggestions so far, I really am leaning towards using the peas verse for another song

Zurf, I kind of posted the chords from memory so it might not be exactly right....
Old Doll, I think you might be right, and of course if I end up building a song around that line I'll be sure to mention 'Pops'  smile

yeah, i don't really follow the modern day label of 'redneck', i love country music because i was raised around it, i have an accent cuz i was born with it, and i grew up in the woods and i loved it. I didn't jump on the bandwagon when larry the cable guy came out, and i aint gonna jump off when it goes back out of style. I am what i am because of how and where i was raised. I'll be the first to admit there's plently of people more country than me, ive never worked on a farm (i have hulled my share of peas though lol), but i like a laid back kind of lifestyle and grass under my feet......
I've been called a redneck by other people, and the term doesn't offend me. Usually when I call myself that its in a humerous way.
But thats very good advice Zurf, I tick alot of other country fans off because I like Metallica and Guns N Roses too. I try to tell people you can;t let nashville tell you what to listen to, but they say there are two kinds of music 'country' and 'western'.... oh well you cant reason with some people

Don't know who sang 'the first time ever i saw your face' originally, but i have Johnny Cash's American Highway (IV or V), with him singing it so I know the song.

Okay this should be the last one I have to empty out of the old notebook before I can start a new one, but I have a problem.
I have a  list of verses that I personally think have a lot of potential, and one bridge type thing, but none of it seems to fit together into a song that would make any sense. The tune and rythym is similar to the devil in the sleeping bag or shotgun willie.... I wish there was a magic phrase that I could use as a chorus that would tie it all together. I don't want to throw these verses away (or at least not all of them) but i can't seem to use them,  so maybe one of the other songwriters could take a look and see if they can find a song that fits together among the verses in this list??? Help would be greatly appreciated.

VERSES I"VE COME UP WITH-
G
I got to town ridin' a greyhound
         C
And I wasn't stayin' long
        G                                      D
That is untill I found I couldn't leave
G
Because of circumstances
                 C
That were out of my control
         G                           D                    G
Or at least thats what I let people believe

Now I don't understand friend
How can I apologize
For things that I aint never said
I couldn't stand to hear you cryin'
So I covered up my ears
But your voice was loud enough to wake the dead

There's a guitar and a Bible
And a wore out dollar bill
Its all I have and all I really need
Cuz im barefoot and Im grinnin'
And I'm strummin' right along
And wishin' that I knew how to pick lead

He was sittin' on the corner
With a guitar in his hand
And I stopped to drop a quarter in his hat
he said hello my name is Johnny
And once upon a time
Ida laughed at a tip as small as that

There aint no way of knowin'
Where all the money goes
Or better yet when the world is gonna end
I think I'll leave it up to Jesus
to make the final call
And just play my country music untill then

I was sittin' on the front porch
hank was on the radio
hullin' peas with cousin Paul
When I heard a voice from heaven
and it gave me a good song
the words to which I cant seem to recall

THE OTHER THINGAMAJIGGER
             C                                          G
And we spend our whole lives goin' nowhere
                                                            D
When somewhere's where we wanta be
               G
Me I aint lookin' for nuthin
                                     D              G
But i guess nuthin was lookin' for me

Okay I know its kind of ridiculous, but I kind of liked it lol Anybody see anything in there at all???? Or should I just hold on to them and use them seperately in something else??

I hope the voodoo worked, I've only done this once before.... anyway there it is. I have an alternate version where you sing two verses, replacing the  A then D on the first with E7 A, then the chorus..... but anyway comments/suggestions?

or maybe the last four lines as the chorus, and the first four as the verse, cuz then I could use the redneck line more than once and it was my fav. what do you think? (I'd take out the 'and' of course)

Sunshine angels i wish ye all farewell
Please dont miss me when i fall
I tried to fly back up again
But failed when i let go

This line right here is pure gold smile
I think you're getting better, keep up the good work

i had to go to a school full of port neches yuppies, and God forbid you actually own a country CD, I got more crap over my accent too....
You've got to be yourself, you'll find that usually in life your best friends aren't in school anyway.
Personally I found that after I finally got fed up with it and told 'em what they could kiss, i instantly became cooler. (not really 'in', but the majority of people didn't mess with me much)..... you've got to be yourself. People respond to those who are secure with who they are, most often with jealousy, but sometimes with a degree of respect. Respect won't neccesarily get you invited to all the parties, or the cool people's lunch tables, but its something worth having because it says 'hey i'm not just another yuppie clone who'll do anything for attention'....
Oddly enough it was if you WEREN"T punk that you got alot of crap where I'm at, but I say to each his own and as long as nobody's messin' with anybody else I don't have anything against it. But I'm a barefoot guitar pickin george jones listnin' kind of person, not a punkish person. I have been looked down on my people over black shirts, which to me don't make any sense, if its black and it says 'lynyrd skynyrd' on it I don't think that classifies me as gothic, that screams 'redneck' right there lol
Anyway I've talked too long already, best of luck settling in, the end of the first year it starts getting better (or at least it did for me). Your probly gonna have to come to terms with some things and grow up a little bit first, but thats just another beautiful part of life smile

I have a few friends in the service as well, Greg's over in Iraq as we speak, and Paul just got back.... Blake I don't know where he's at.
Nice song, seems like people get off on tangents about what they think about the war, and i'm talking about people for AND against it, that they forget our own boys are still over there putting thier lives on the line. I hope they know there are still people hoping and praying for them, and who are proud of them, if not always the government that sent them off....
Anyway very nice song jets.

Ah Old Doll, once again you've written a fine set of lyrycs that sound like poetry.... very peaceful easy kind of feeling to it. Make a nice fingerpicking piece i think.

I couldn't find it on here, anybody know the chords to it, or where i could find them??Or maybe I have the wrong name....
it goes,
'and the devil shivered in his sleeping bag,
He said travelin' on the road is such a drag...'

Dunlop .60's for me, sometimes I use a little thicker one. The soft picks tend to give that mellow sound I like about thumb strumming, but also the chicka chicka sound I get from a pick smile
I use a pick and finger style, its not really fingerpicking, its more like picking/strumming....... does that make sense? Anyway I'm kind of backward, but very set in my ways lol
