I can tell you with great confidence that the no alcohol thing at church is not entirely true.  Not that I am necessarily willing to explain how I know that to be the case or anything.  Let's just say that gig bags can hold more than sheet music.

Yep.  Couldn't agree more.  The rest of the rhetoric ended Tuesday at 11PM.  Now it's do or don't do with very little middle ground.

Ozymandias - Sadly, the McCain of 2000 didn't do so well with his Presidential campaign.  Perhaps that's why he did things differently this time.  I voted for him in 2000 and wish he had beaten Bush in the primaries.

He's done a lot of good for the country in the Congress these past eight years, though.  Most people have no idea how much money he's saved the taxpayers, but it's probably in the tens of billions.  He's been an amazingly vocal and effective advocate in favor or restraint on Federal programs.  I am definitely in the "less government is better government" category.

Well, I gotta say I don't think the right person was elected. I'm not saying this because of race or politics, either. There's just something about the man I don't trust. There is just way too many unanswered questions out there that was never disclosed. I felt that throughout the campains the press was skewed more towards Obama. If MsCain had been elected I would still feel as though the wrong person was elected. I've said from the beginning that our choices for president were very poor. Who was the lesser of the 2 evils? Who know's but I'm afraid we are in for some trying times. Hope I'm wrong about but we'll see and understand more in the upcoming months.

That's funny.  I felt exactly the opposite this time.  Not on the trust issue, as I don't trust anyone who actually wants the job.  But I felt as if either of them could do the job this time around.  The last two elections were picking the best loser.  This time we got to choose between a very, very bright guy who actually knows what its like not to have enough money for rent.  He knows how it feels to go hungry and what it means to work your own *** off to do something about it.  The other guy was a well-off partying pretty-boy who took his hits, humbled himself and has demonstrated himself to be a true public servant in the best meaning of that word.   I felt pretty good about our choices this time.  I voted for Senator McCain, but I am not at all disappointed that we elected Senator Obama.  I just wish that McCain had won in 2000 and that it was Junior running against Obama in 2008.  But you can't change past history, you can only change future history.

Well, I just checked out the ad.  I do the "G" chord that way, and I also usually wear the model's "what was that sound - did I do that" expression when I play too.

UYK - At least those folks voted.  In addition to the historic results of this election, another historic event took place simultaneously.  That second event, closely related, is the voter TURNOUT.  It is shameful in most elections how few persons eligible to vote register, and how few who are registered actually bother.  President Clinton (just as an example, not meant to pick on him) was elected in what some considered enough percentage to give him a "mandate" (whatever that means).  But when you really looked it, his large results were really only something like 13% of the registered voters.  He won fair and square, and he won big, and looking back on it deservedly so (though at the time I thought differently).  This time, however, turnout was huge.  Over 80% of the registered voters in my district had voted by 10AM yesterday!  That's amazing.  Folks were coming to vote literally by the busload.  Very gratifying.

As far as Senator Obama winning, he wasn't my choice, but he has a lot of assets and I wish him extreme success.  Our current administration wipes its backside with the Constitution.  Senator Obama is a Constitutional scholar who has shown respect for the law.  That alone will be refreshing.  If he can accomplish even 1/3 of what he has set himself to do, his Presidency will be wildly successful and the country will be better off for it.

I always dress as a pirate.  It's only costume I have.  This year my daughters want me to be a prince.  So I guess I'll drop the bandana and add a three-corner hat and a cape.  I'm going to a party at the house of a musician, so there's the remote possibility of a jam.

Arpeggios and scales.  Plenty of books, or you can check out the theory forum here in Chordie.

I also grew up in the Pennsylvania mountains and consider it a good place to be from.  Far from.  I like going back, and I love the country.  But trying to raise a family in that economic climate would be tough to say the least.  Plus, I got beat up a lot until the time I graduated from H.S. I could defend myself better than average.  I don't really want my kids to have that sort of rough and tumble high school years where happiness was dependant upon fitting in with others or having a hard fist.  I have rarely fit in well.  It is a pleasure when I do.  Perhaps one of the reasons I like Chordie so well.

As far as places I've visited, I am torn between Duck, NC and Port Townsend, WA.  Duck is lovely but is commercializing.  It is not as likely as it once was to take a thermos full of coffee to the beach at 5AM and have it to myself until an hour after sunrise, watching the dolphins migrate north for the day with the pelicans following as a sliver of sun turns the breakers from gray to pink to magenta to white with the clouds overhead following suit.

Port Townsend, WA.  Friendly people.  Good food.  The best beer I have ever had, and it could be gotten anywhere.  Every pub brewed their own, and each was better than the last no matter what order one used for his stumbling samplage.  (samplage is a word of my own making that is cross between samplings and pilgramage).  They had two comfortable town structures on the waterfront built specifically for fishing.  Kayaks everywhere they couldn't squeeze in sailboats.  A wonderful place.  If I ever win the lottery and have more money than I can spend in a lifetime, I'm going to do the Diamond Jim Brady approach and rent an apartment in one of the several waterfront historic hotels, for which I will call ahead and have them stock it with beer, whiskey, wine, groceries, herbs for cooking fresh fish, and bait prior to my arrival.

I guess the best place I ever vacation is in my imagination.

Practice to get the muting right.  Practice with a metronome to get the timing AND the muting right.  I'd wish you good luck, but aside from raw God-given talent, guitar is one of those "make your own luck" things brought about by persistance and practice.

A couple issues I have with the Zen in use.

1. There is no random feature.  You have to set playlists precisely and then listen to them in the exact order.  You can't even load the songs into the playlist and hit a shuffle command with the software.  That's kind of a pain.  I would like to be able to shuffle up the songs.

2. It doesn't load songs in the same order as on the album, but in alphabetical order of song.  This is kind of a randomizing function in a way, so not entirely annoying.

3. There is no fast-forward or reverse.  You can go back to the beginning of the song or to the next song.  You can't rewind a little to replay a neat riff you just heard.

4. You have to pay an extra $10 for the MP3 software.  It comes with software that works with .wma files, but to get MP3 you have to pay $10.  I didn't know whether .wma files or MP3 files were smaller, so I have to pay $10 just to experiment.  That stinks.

5. On the positive side, I very much like the SD memory slot.  I have an SD card loaded with Classical and Ethnic music (mostly Celtic), and plan to load other ones with Bluegrass, Gospel, Kid music, etc.

6. The annoying thing about the SD memory slot is that I can only play songs on that card or on the main memory of the device.  You can't mix songs from the SD card and the main device in a playlist.

So, there are some limits that seem kind of bone-headed to me, but the sound is good, the capacity is wonderful, and I've been enjoying using it.  It is far, far more flexible and easy to carry around than the 50 albums or so worth of music I have loaded on it.

cool

All I've got to do is get a good pair of sunglasses and I should be able to play rings around the rest of you then.  I'm afraid I don't know what a joss stick is.  If it's what I think it is, then I won't be able to play jazz and rock.  Drug free work place you know.  Can't be losing my excellent job over a few minutes' buzz.  How about I'll chomp on a cigar and crank out some country tunage or slap on a straw cowboy hat and overalls with no shirt underneath and lay out some bluegrass?

Shoot.  I'm bald and apparantly now stuck with mediocrity.  If I had known about this, I'd have taken up the accordian.

Old Doll - While I respect the courts, I don't care if it is artwork.  Illegal is illegal.  He can perform his art, but if he violates laws in the performance, well then tough.  Even with free speech, speech is not entirely free.   I had a law professor who explained it thusly, "My right to swing my fist around ends precisely at the tip of your nose."

I'm self-taught too.  I hope your teacher is less of a knucklehead than mine.

As far as blues tricks, there's a book in the "You Can Teach Yourself..." line by Mel Bay for acoustic blues.  I have it, but haven't opened it yet as I'm still working through "You Can Teach Yourself Fingerpick Guitar" and a book on scales because Russell and Jerome threatened not to answer any more of my dumb questions if I don't start learning scales.  (not really, each is much to kind to say something that rude)

Anyway - good luck.  There's also sitting in with guys and when one of them does a lick you really like, hand him/her a fresh cold BEvERage (if you're of an appropriate age to do so) and ask him/her to teach you the lick.  Listening to guys like Keith Richards and Buddy Guy and such, I get the feeling they didn't learn to play from a book.

Well Russell, I'm heading to Alaska next summer for some salmon.  I'm not sure of the regs, but if I can I'll have some smoked or flash-frozen for you and send it along (if you remind me).  I'm not in any hurry for much of anything these days.  I've been trying to slow things down a bit - especially the spinning in my head.

Speaking of old-time boom-chicka-boom country music, I'm working on a song titled Old Blue about a pickup truck I just sold.  If you've ever heard Neil Young's song about his dog King you'll know about what to expect.  I'd be real grateful for any suggestions on writing in a Zydeco style.  I have an idea for a song about faith that I think would sound good in that uber-happy style.

I got a Creative Zen 4GB, with the FM tuner and an SD slot.  So far, so good.  It cost me a whopping $0, but I did have to pay $15 for a 2GB SD card.  I just got it over the weekend, so I still have a lot of messing around with it to see whether I like it.  It is easy to use, and it sounds OK.  For the price, it's tough to beat.

OK, so Russell are you going to write a new song as a follow up to Zurf and the Evil B titled B Chord Amnesty.  If so, I recommend writing it in D with all open chords.  :-)
