The song is mostly in D, but the last line of the verses goes G A D...that's about it. Have a listen and see if that sounds right to you.

That is if this is the correct video for the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR9AG_R6eO0

I'm doing pretty good in a family college bowl pool so far - won it last year. Jerome, from what I've heard FSU is the cream of the crop this year, although Auburn has had some fortunate plays go their way in a couple of big games (vs UGA & vs 'Bama), as well as more post season/big bowl experience. I think it'll be a fun game to watch so I'll be tuning in. I enjoyed the Texas mascot not wanting to leave after their loss to Oregon - maybe a bad sign for the Austin faithful.

Thanks Dino - yep, and it is for a good reason movies never have stuff like that.

Just an observation about movies, and how most movies are an escape from our daily routines.

Life Ain’t Like the Movies By Jeff Gilpin

December 23, 2013

Verse 1

[G]Life ain’t like the movies

Or [Em]story books that I read

Where the [C]people get in trouble

But it [D]all works out in the end.

Or they [G]get some moral lesson

Or maybe [Em]God steps in and helps them

To [C]figure out the meaning

Of [D]what their life’s about.

Chorus 1

[C]Real life’s for [D]living [G]ain’t it,

And to [C]forget or for[D]giving [G]too.

[C]Your best friend may [D]die,

And you can’t [Em]save him

Because [G]life ain’t life [D] like in the [G]movies.

Verse 2

[G]People in the movies are

Not [Em]like the folks that we meet.

[C]Plain old folk are some how

Missing [D]from the silver screen.

[G]Heroes are always handsome,

And their [Em]women nice and then some,

And even the [C]bad guys and gals

Still look [D]better than you and me.

Chorus 2

[C]Real life is for [D]plain old folk [G]ain’t it.

[C]Most with stories [D]no one wants to [G]hear,

But we still [C]gaze at movie [D]stars,

And their [Em]fancy cars and houses

Because [G]our lives are never [D]lives like in the [G]movies.

Verse 3

But [G]every now and then you’ll see

[Em]One that catches your eye

[C]From the silver screen that is

[D]Almost like real life,

But [G]most of us will look on past

To other [Em]movies more like the rest

[C]Because we get enough

Of the [D]real life every single day.

Chorus 3

[C]Real life is [D]not for movies, [G]no sir.

That’s [C]just for simply [D]living day in day [G]out.

Movies are our [C]break from the daily [D]grind,

A look out[Em]side the mediocre

[G]Real life ain’t [D]life like in the [G]movies.

Hey easybeat -I appreciate the seasonal sentiment. Normally lyrics without any music associated with them are considered poems, and we have another forum for that. Please update your song to include the music if you want it to remain in this forum.  Thanks - jets60/Jeff G

The Fender Forum beats up this topic pretty good. It has suggestions on both the chords and tabs for down home blues: http://fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&a … ber=574809

Lyrics can be found and other lyrics sites if you google it.

Hope this helps.

Here is one of the many that you can find on Chordie. You might also want to try some of the other Tab specific websites as well...enjoy!

Great to hear Jeff! Glad it all worked out.

I would prefer you open a new topic, nydrummer, for a new song request.

You can find the mp3 on Amazon by both Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell. Could not find the chords any where but it seems simple enough. Here is the youtube link to Jerry Reed's version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjrxZCWAIA4

Maybe there are some deals out there with Christmas around the corner. I hope you find an even better guitar.

Zurf - My friend - Lordy, I respect your attempt, but I am sure glad I had my kids earlier in life and I didn't have to go through what you are going through now. Learn and do NOT repeat the experience. Play guitar...and maybe write a song about this...I recommend you write a country song.  wink

The song is in chordie - use the transpose chords to adjust - Chordie shows the song in C though. Maybe you should try that.

Thanks you two - Yep, a bunch of us on chordie have been there and done that. With this song I king of play around with the G chord, sometimes playing all 6 strings and other times playing the higher 4....kind of a folky waltz sound that was stuck in my head this morning.

Reflective folk song about the changes you go through in life.

Along for the Ride Jeff Gilpin

11/20/2013

Intro

Strumming A

Verse 1

[A]When I wore the skin of a younger man

I was [G]fearless and clear eyed and [A]brave.

I’d [G]never back down from a [A]challenge in life.

I could [G]take whatever life [A]gave.

I could [G]take whatever life [A]gave

[G]Whether for good or for [A]bad.

I [G]Could take whatever life [A]gave.

[G]Looking back [D]now I am [A]glad.

Verse 2

[A]Later I started my family.

I [G]had no idea of the[A]change.

With a [G]wife, later a [A]child then another,

My pri[G]orities got rear[A]ranged.

While [G]I pretty much felt like the [A]same.

I [G]now had to take care of some [A]others.

Much [G]more than just my[A]self anymore:

[G]Son, daughter, [D]and my wife their [A]mother.

Verse 3

[A]Raising my family changed me.

[G]I was no longer care[A]free.

I [G]had to take care of my [A]children and wife,

So [G]much more important than [A]me.

[G]While at first I couldn’t [A]see.

[G]Time will [A]altering your views.

[G]Without them I’d cease to [A]be,

So [G]much more im[D]portant than [A]me.

Verse 4

[A]Now I’m older and wiser I guess

Than that [G]kid who set out long a[A]go

Who [G]had no idea of his [A]future back then,

Or the [G]changes into which he would [A]grow.

My [G]kids are all grown now and living their [A]lives.

[G]My wife is still by my [A]side,

But [G]I am no longer that [A]care free kid

Who [G]was just a[D]long for the [A]ride.

Verse 5

[A]Now I look back at the changes of time

[G]From that young man I used to [A]be.

[G]Just like the clay on the [A]potter’s wheel

[G]I’ve become the man that you [A]see.

[G]Shaped when I was more [A]malleable.

[G]Hardened through time and through [A]wear.

[G]Not quite as tall as I [A]once was.

[G]No longer [D]so free of [A]care.

I read an article today about a local DC professional basketball player who helped out a homeless man by buying him lunch earlier this year. It reminded me of the last time I was in downtown DC when I gave some money to a homeless man who was down on his luck. I worried a bit at the time what he would end up using the money for, but after reading today's story I thought back on it. What the man ended up using the money for was his business. I hope it would be put to good use, but it was a gift and once it left my hand I should not have let it bother me any more. Anyways, that's the story and here's the song. I will be sure to post the link once I get a recording up.

The Hand Out By Jeff Gilpin

November 18, 2013

Verse 1

[Am]I gave a helping hand out to a man out on the [G]street.

A little friendly aid for them, maybe get a bite to [Am]eat.

[Am]My parents raised me growing up to care for my fellow [G]man.

Not to carry them all on my back, but to still give what I [D]can.

So I [Am]give when I am able and try not to give too [G]much.

I hope they one day can survive without my little [Am]crutch.

I [Am]know that I’m quite fortunate to be the man they [G]see.

Where I am by the grace of God, but that man could of been [Am]me.

Chorus

[D]You are what you are when no one’s [Am]looking.

[G]You’ll do what you do when no one [Am]sees.

[D]You may be near the top of your [Am]mountain in life,

[G]Or down in the depths upon your [D]knees. [Em] [G]

Verse 2

[Am]What he did with what I gave I guess I’ll never [G]know.

It could go in a needle or a bottle or some [Am]blow.

[Am]How those I give to use it, well it will be there de[G]cision.

It may take them even lower or may strengthen their con[D]viction.

[Am]It pains me this frailty that affects my fellow [G]man

Surviving in this crazy world where everything will and [Am]can

[Am]Happen to the best of folks despite their best laid [G]plans.

Something breaks as their life skates on down to where they [Am]land.

Chorus

[D]You are what you are when no one’s [Am]looking.

[G]You’ll do what you do when no one [Am]sees.

[D]You may be near the top of your [Am]mountain in life,

[G]Or down in the depths upon your [D]knees. [Em] [G]

Verse 3

[Am]I can’t let their decisions deflect me from what I [G]do.

I tell myself that in some situations that man could’ve been [Am]you.

[Am]I’m far from a judge; I’m not the jury of this [G]man.

It is his choice to act upon the gift I’ve given [D]him.

[Am]Yet why am I so worried that my gift hasn’t [G]helped.

I may have done more harm, or more [Em]tightening of the [Am]belt.

Like [Am]step stones placed into his path and I’ve just placed a[G]nother.

I pray his steps will lead him out and [Em]not cause him to [Am]stumble.

Chorus

[D]You are what you are when no one’s [Am]looking.

[G]You’ll do what you do when no one [Am]sees.

[D]You may be near the top of your [Am]mountain in life,

[G]Or down in the depths upon your [D]knees.

Hey Jerome - Very nice song - Sweet story that I'm sure will be well received by your wife. Plays nice too. Well done sir.

This was a great project and I am grateful to have had the chance to work with Phill on this. I am sorry we couldn't work out the recording part of it which was totally my fault, and in the future I will try to get my technical problems sorted out. Just to clarify, I wrote the son's verses and Phill wrote the father's verses as well as the bridge. Phill, I sure wish I could have come over and finished it proper. I'll keep that as a bucket list item.

Hey Phill - Poignant and moving poem. There's a TV series that just ended it's run this year, but was quite popular in the states called Breaking Bad that touches on this subject in many episodes. I agree that sympathy can be difficult to give to those who have become addicted to drugs, but drug addiction is a sad situations for all the lives, including the addicts', that are or will be adversely impacted.

My recommendation is to make your song about what makes her more than just a girl in a dress to you...in your words, and don't make it too complex...the simple story songs are the easiest for people to understand. You want someone to hear it and be able to relate to what the word are saying, but you want them to relate to it with a tug of emotion if possible...with a thoughtful smile or maybe even a tear.
