Nice lyrycs (and chords too by the way)

Think my fav. line was

Life’s not a [E]game
[F#m]Yet in some ways it [D]is
[D]Winning isn’t all about [E]money
But [E]sometimes losing it [F#m]is

lol..... i would say you gave him some good advice

well thank you sincerely for the compliments Don (and Old Doll of course).... First time that many lines came to me in one sitting so i hate to just throw them away lol
The more I look at it the less I want to change it TOO much. (no offense 'song doctor' but i think the tunes in our heads are slightly differnt cuz the timings working alright for me when i take out a few words here and there...) What I think I'm gonna do is keep all the ones that came 'naturally' and just edit out the 'filler ins'...
and it got stuck in my head too, yesterday i was singing it all day. Very nice compliment though, im sure im flattered.
I can't share the true identity of the person..(its a long and complicated story)... at this time. I'd like this song to be able to mean different things to different people so I'm leaving that blank unfilled for now.

hmmm......... well i'd be interested in seeing the music definitely. As far as the lyrycs go its not bad,  i like the shortened verses but i might have to play with them a bit more I like the waylon feel though and actually when i started playing around with it yesterday i kept it in E myself.
Hate to be a stickler on a few of the lines but understand there are a few hidden personal winks and nods towards certain people who might need to get the message if you know what i mean.
For instance you wrote that 'you just started losin' cuz im doin' the choosin' this time'.... See the thing is the anonymous person to whom this song is adressed tends to look at things this way,  "I want this but if I choose you I can't have it, but on the other hand I don't want to feel guilty...", so to them choosing me over thier next fiasco would mean losing what they want but at the same time if they don't choose me (and usually they don't... in fact they NEVER do....) when they come down off the high mood they end up feeling miserably guilty. Thats why I wrote 'don't worry about losing' because THIS time I'm the one choosing not to go with them, so they don't have to lose what they want or feel guilty..... anyway this is all from personal life experience so trust me they'd know what it means.

Anyway I think you did a great job 'boiling it down', so If I may I'll just see what I can do with it and we'll meet somewhere in the middle (about WHICH lines to use not the length because you're absolutely right its way too long).

oh ok cool thanks yall

hmmmm.... not a bad idea James. Actually the thing about holding over the chords before going to the next line fits in perfect with a bluesy rhythym too. Right now my fingers are throbbing cuz ive been out on my porch playing for about three hours but Im gonna give that a spin later.

Ah yes went and worked out kind of a chord base for this song,
Its a littel crazy which is why the words don't seem to work out quite right but they actually do fit in there.... Its got kind of a willie nelsonish type rhythym going where you hold on to the chord for a few seconds before singing the next line in a place or two. Another thing is when you're singing there's certain words you hold onto too.... Lets see heres an example (Im gonna write it in G but im not really sure what key i want to put it in yet)

VERSE

G
Well it aint right (this word is longer),
                                        C
This hell that you put me through(hold)
      D
Ive lost my mind trying to figger
                        G
What I oughta do(hold)
      C
I'm tired of you're talking

And I'm bout done walking
             G
back to you(hold)
D      (now hang onto this one a minute)
While you're busy throwin on more fuel
                                                                                      G
To this hell(hold on just a little while) that you put me through

CHORUS:

         C
Yeah I'm done pretendin'(hold)
G         (now hold onto this but not as long as you did the D)
That I can't see the flames(hold)
          D
Don't  think you can fool me
G       (hold on just a sec right here)
Cuz you've already made it pretty plain
        C
That I(hold a bit)  aint worth tryin'
                                             G
To be(hold a bit) around to you(hold)
             D
And it's just about killed me
                                                                 G
This hell(little bit longer) that you put me through

I guess thats kind of confusing lol But anyway you're probly right about needing to size em down a little bit. Its still a pretty unfinished piece of work. Im working out the tune though so it'll be dressed up before too long

Well once again I was up late last night and i wrote a song. Nearly fell asleep half way through it so im doing good to have the words, much less the tune to go with it. Untill i can come up with some kind of nice intro and chord progression just kind of play it in a basic 3 chord pattern i guess..... change to 2nd chord to start off the chorus the structure changes up on it a little bit.

VERSE 1:

Well it aint right
This hell you put me through
I lost my mind trying to figger
What I oughta do
Well I'm tired of you're talking
And I'm bout done walking
back to you
While you're busy throwin' on more fuel
To this hell you put me through

CHORUS 1:

Yeah I'm through with pretendin'
That I can't see the flames
Don't think you can fool me
Cuz you already made it pretty plain
That I aint worth tryin'
To be around to you
And its just about killed me
This hell you keep putting me through

VERSE 2:

Well when it comes down to choosin'
i end up pretty far down the line
Well don't worry about losin'
Cuz Im the one choosin' this time
Yeah and I'm choosin freedom
And the good times Ive been needin'
So sorry if that don't set well with you
But im done bein' slow cooked
In this hell that you put me through

CHORUS 2:

Yeah I'm done cryin'
Over your ever changin' ways
I knew I'd finally get enough of you
One of these days
Can you smell the smoke
Or do you even have any clue
That Ive been set afire
With the hell that you put me through

VERSE 3:

One minute you love me
The next you're cursing my name
And how can I win
If the rules don't ever stay the same?
So far you've been dealin'
But I've got a feelin'
That all thats about to change
You can keep what you won so far
But I'm done playing the game

CHORUS 3:

Yeah I'm done livin'
With your up and down attitude
And I'm tired of burnin'
While you're out there being untrue
You're playing with fire
So I'd be careful what I do
Cuz its left me kind of sore
This hell that you put me through

VERSE 4:

Well this time I'm the only one
Who's pullin' on my puppet strings
Cuz I finally figgered out
What all that empty talkin' really means
Just cut out the lyin'
Cuz I aint buyoin'
Anymore heartaches from you
How I have a heart at all I don't know
After all you've put me through

CHORUS:

Well I'm tired of bendin'
Cuz sooner or later I'll break
And you're pushin' awful hard
And that makes you awful hard to take
Aint you done enough yet
Can't you see how I'm torn and bruised
And nearly numb down to the bone
From the hell that you put me through

Wrote it after listenin' to a bunch of  waylon jennings so it kind of has that feel to it....
I hope it doesn't go on too long, four verses is kind of pushing it i think but i really liked the last one and couldn't stand to take it out... anyway as usual comment/suggestions? smile

Here's one for you " I've tried everything in my life, the things I liked I've done twice". I know I don't have to tell you where that came from because I know You got that right.

Well met bootlegger smile

lol see you made sure the capo thing didn't come up with this one.
All in all a very nice song rooster, the only part im stuck on is the B to A to G.... maybe its just me but the g doesn't seem to fit (or maybe its the B?)
But now on to all the positives smile
Really like the intro chords and the E minors going out. I also like the chord progressions all through the verses. I like the fact you took time to make the intros and outro instrumentals different than the rest of the song..... so yeah you did good. smile

nice one dude.... reminds me of something i would write when i get off my country kick long enough to do something dark and mysterious lol
I really like the lyrycs (did i spell that right?)
" had a black coat but you painted it red"
I really like that line, not sure what it means but its the one that kind of sticks out to me. Sometimes I start out really strong then my words kind of fade out and get weaker but i think in this song every set of lines stays strong the whole way through.
Anyway im done babbling, nice work big_smile

Well having been a 14 year old girl not too long ago i can say this from experience.... becoming a teenage girl sucks. Really bad (don't get me wrong i've had a lot of fun) but we're not used to dealing with hormones yet and we've just had a boatload dumped on us.
Don't know about her but i never was in a good mood unless there was some good music on or my best friend was around....  im afraid there is no cure lol

I bought this book the other day called "Learn to Play Country Licks", and so far ive found it really interesting, but i have a question. On certain licks that require hitting two strings at once:

l-----------12/14---------------
l-------------------------
l-----------12/14---------------
l---------------------------
l-----------------------------
l-------------------------
(example)

,it reccomends using the pick AND fingers. Ive never done this before so im not sure what the proper technique is. I've been thumping my pick and using my middle finger to hit the other note. Am I doing this right or this a certain way this should be done?

hi there john smile
Ive been playing about four years now, and i think ive come a long way. I remember when i first started i felt more comfortable without a pick also (course i was playing mostly country and gospel so i could just bounce along without any trouble). There's absolutely nothing wrong with that (I know a guy who never uses a pick and he really is a good player), but there ARE a lot of neat tricks and sounds you won't be able to make with your thumb alone.
Strumming rhythym is probly the hardest thing to master when you're learning how to play, and the only way to ever really get a hold of it is to PLAY PLAY PLAY. Keep practicing with AND without a pick, it'll come to  you eventually trust me.

muscadine's kind of like a huge grape, only its tangy and has a big seed in the middle. Good raw to me but they use to make homemade wine and preserves

yeah i like to go to goodwill and dig through the old records. Picked up a merle haggard and the  'shotgun willie' album for 98 cents a piece.
Best place to look is junk and missions stores. Antique places will charge you more than thier worth (Usually) but sometimes you'll find a rare album.

Old Doll, its funny because i write as much as i can and then usually don't end up with more than two verses.... in some ways i wish i COULD go around the world when i wanted to but my creative bursts are usually short and sweet lol

James for this I salute you.....
I wrote a comment in Old Doll's 'country/western' thread about this. I won't take all day on here but i have to say that the 'country life' aint what you see on T.V., its just good clean simple livin'. To me the country life is the good life, even if it is kind of slow.
And by the way if you're an average joe workin' for you're living and just living the best you can then you can take it from a certified Seedtick hick that you've got it down pat.

Its funny really that I (livin' about 15 minutes from Jasper, a small town in east texas), came to Port Arthur, which to me is a big city but it really aint THAT big, they call me a hick. Then I have friends from HOUSTON that want to say thier as 'country' as i am, then there's people from backwoods lousiana that say im kind of country but 'ive been to town' so to speak....
Just to get off on one of my soapboxes.....Country livin' is exactly that, country livin'. Its a lifestyle and a state of mind. Grant it most of us have an accent and a strange obsession with hank williams jr, but its more about HOW you live than talkin' big and wearing a certain brand of blue jeans.
( I do wonder sometimes how many people claiming to be "rednecks" have ever spent the day in the woods, or hulled a bushel of peas, or stole a watermelon, or tasted muscadines or berry cobbler or sasafras tea? Or would know which weeds to chew on and which ones to look out for, or which trees make good whittlin' and which ones don't.) But really more importantly than all that the country state of mind is understanding the simple life. Livin' slow, poker on saturday night church on sunday mornin' just kind of take life as it comes and try to have a good time.
Some of us are farmers, some of us are from the woods, some of us are just small town everyday people, maybe some of us are stuck in the city wishin' we could be home but just tryin' to make a livin' and live good the best way we know how....THAT's what country music is about, the common man, and that really aint got nuthin' to do with where you're from or how much money you make.

But how long does someone have to be around until they are not considered 'new' ?

What about Lyle Lovett, I've heard him categorized as 'Texas Swing'  (Is that a sub-category of country?)-----

Usually you are caonsidered 'classic country' when you've been around 15-20 years. An artists ceases to be "new" when he has survived the fickle world of nashville long enough to realease a greatest hits record.

In answer to your second question yes texas swing is a sub-category of country music. COuntry is really a very broad style because it can include anything from texas swing to country rock to Ray Charles lol (yes he is recognized by the country music people and a contributor to the genre).
Texas swing is a combination of traditional honky tonkish country music and big band and swing. Bob Wills and the Texas Troubadours can be thanked for making it famous.

And yes you are right, it IS the quality of the music not when it was recorded. To me thats one of the best things about country music, you can line my family up from age 11 to 80 (and im talking every pit stop in between), turn on the radio and there won't be one person who doesn't know the words, be it an old hank or ernest tubb song, or somebody like Montgomery Gentry or gretchen wilson. Unlike a lot of popular music styles (not knocking em just saying) the next generation doesn't snub and/or forget the past generation.

i have an original 'second helpings' record i got from an antique store...
Ed King was on the back too, if im not mistaken he ended up leaving the band too just before Steve Gaines joined

yeah my dad uses it alot when we have a lot of different instruments playing together. He leads from piano and holds up his fingers so we all know which chord to play. Don't know how he manages to play all the parts and hold his fingers up too but he pulls it off really well....
Its especially good for people just learning to play cuz they can follow along pretty easily even if they don't know the song. Maybe I'll use it the next time I post a song on here...

Oh yeah i read you're comment about Willie Nelson... its funny because i watched on T.V. the show he did in Houston (or soemthing like that it was a local channel so im guessing beaumont or houston) and he was really really bad.
