I'll have to check out the Youtube vids again and just try to muscle through.

Re: Backing Tracks (8 replies, posted in Recording)
I want to make them for specific songs I play so that I can try learning some lead licks to throw in on the breaks to make my playing more interesting.

Topic: Backing Tracks (8 replies, posted in Recording)
I would like to make backing tracks to learn lead picking and harmonica hooting over.
I can keep time or use a metronome. I can do a strum pattern and do a simple bass line.
What I don't know is how to give a lead in, put in a click track, or how to do multiple tracks that synch.
I use free software. I am not going to buy any software for this, regardless of whether it's better. I'll skip it rather than buy recording software.
Is there a way to do this easily? The Youtube tutorials, especially those that start out with "OK, this is very easy. What you do is....," sound to me like dadadadadadadadadada.

So - How do I go about making myself some backing tracks?
Maybe this belongs in Recording. I'm going to put it in Recording.
I only have free on-line recording software.

I do two Jim Croce songs that I can put up for Amy if she does From a Distance. "Age" and "Big Wheel" are the two. I kind of sort of started to a little bit learn "One Less Set of Footsteps". Astronomical charted out "I've Got a Name" for me because he thought I'd do it well. It's a good Croce song too. In fact, the only Croce song that isn't a good Croce song in my opinion is "Time In a Bottle", and that's not Croce's fault but Kim Ferraar's fault. He was the Jr. High choir director and had the choir perform that song at every event for three years and I got sick of it. Mr. Ferraar though, was a good guy, but for that one problem.
I think I'm going to have to put "We Just Disagree" in the big yellow book of songs to learn.

Oh it was? I don't remember that.
There was Scotch. And then beer with dinner. And then Scotch. Woody Woodpecker dropped by for a visit in the middle of the song.

Re: APRIL 2017 FSOTM - THE WEIGHT - JACK AND DIANE (52 replies, posted in Featured Song of the Month)
I'll do The Weight for sure. That one's been in my wheelhouse for a while. I don't do it well, but y'all can pretend you're feeling loose and friendly around a riverbank campfire after a day of hiking or fishing or something and it'll all be OK. (Reference MKM's quote in my signature block)
I don't know Jack and Diane, but it's a great song and should be a pretty straight forward strummer. Once I get the rhythm down, I'll probably convert to some finger pattern or another because that's more fun for me usually. It may take me until May or June, but I'm going to do it.

Topic: Epiphany (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
My father-in-law was a man of strong faith. He passed on a while back, 10 years or so. His final words were, "I'll be fine."
I wrote a song about that because I think "I'll be fine" are as good of last words as a man of faith could possibly have.
Dirty Ed and Alvin Pugh, a mutual friend of ours who has since passed, gave me some very helpful constructive criticism and in Alvin's case editing sufficient to merit co-authorship. Nevertheless, I was never satisfied with the song.
The other day, ten years later, I had an epiphany! The song is all about big, scary issues that more or less force faith and potentially bravado. My F-in-law's faith was the kind that showed in the small things, in the day-to-day, in the routine. Oh sure, when the big hairy things came along he was faithful, but also while cooking dinner, or driving in traffic, or checking out at the grocery store. So that's what I should have focused on - the routine,. The day-to-day. And THEN go for the big finish.
When I get it revised, I'll put it in Songwriting.
- Zurf

I always love Dr. John's swamp rock. He's got a great groove, a great feel, indecipherable lyrics, and his left hand plays much better bass lines than I'll ever conceive. Plus he has great hats.

I am changing my 90's song recommendation. It is Nanci Griffith's "From A Distance." And I am going to be fully open here - this is entirely because I want to hear Amy sing it with her family backing her.
For those who thought it was a Bette Midler vehicle... shame on you.

Re: SUGGESTIONS: MAY 2017 FEATURED SONG OF THE MONTH (29 replies, posted in Featured Song of the Month)
My 70's recommendation... Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree" - a solid 12 stringer song that would take Beamer's Metalizing well.
I have no idea if this transcription is good. I've never tried to play the song. It has a B chord shape in it, so it's probably evil.

I love 70's sissified folk/rock. I'll give a listen to my Pandora station for ideas.
90's - I liked Counting Crows and Everclear and Matchbox 20. I'll toss out 3AM. Wait, I better check to see it wasn't in the 00's. Nope. Album released in '96. So I'll go with 3AM. There was a rousing version of 3AM done at Chordiestock V, but it was at roughly 12:30AM. It included lyrics like mmmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaa and ffyernawillendaaaamunnnnnner. The person singing didn't know the lyrics. It didn't matter. Once the lyrics were retrieved, the diction improved but not necessarily the singing. Hearing a percussionist scat a pop song was awesome.

Re: When the tables turn. (5 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I can relate so this beamer!
Last week I attempted a song of Tig`s that I have been learning and playing around with. Because I am not so great on the guitar, I asked one of my sons if he would record me on his proper sound equipment, hoping to add other music to cover up my bad guitar playing, to which he said yes. All good and well the thought! HOWEVER trying to sing without playing and playing without singing so he could record me so that he could add drums and other instrumentals ......completely through my timing out! I am so used to singing in time to either my ukulele or guitar or cajon or whatever instrument I using. After many attempts apparently sometimes I was coming in on the right beat, at other times, late, or very very late (he named all technical jargon about it - puffffft). So he reluctantly resorted to plan B which was to record me whilst strumming the guitar .... hmmm my timing was still out to the drum beat! So, I have learnt that when I sing certain songs, I have invented my own unique timing that no one can follow, it doesn`t follow any rules of timing whatsoever! Recording session ended with NO RECORDING! Think I have been politely told! lol
If you try to put timing on John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters or Lou Rawls, you're just going to wind up frustrated and it won't sound as good when you're done. You're in good company Jandle. Don't let it get you down.

Welcome back. I've got something here waiting for your return. Just before you took a break, you got a new electric guitar. I've got an amp to go with that guitar, but need your address in order to send it to you. It's a second hand Fender practice amp that only seems to work in overdrive mode, but it will make noise, hopefully even the ones you want it to. I'll PM you my e-mail address, because the one I used to register here is about to fade away into the ether.

I think that www.justinguitar.com has a very good beginner lesson series available. It provides a series of Youtube lessons, and they are free of charge (though you are encouraged to donate at your own discretion).
I have no affiliation with that site, I just think it's useful for raw beginners. He's organized the skills you need well and the lessons are short enough to absorb after watching each a few times.
Good luck. Have fun. Stick with it.
Your fingers are going to hurt. Nothing you can do about that but work through it. It takes a couple weeks for you to build up callouses.
Also, unless you have been the victim of some kind of accident or are far outside of human norms, your fingers are not too fat, long, short, thick, thin, or uncoordinated. You can do it. Stick with it. 15 minutes per day practice to get started. Bump that up to 30 once you have enough chords to start playing songs.
