Somehow I thought that Ohio was pretty much landlocked. Do you then have your own version of the San Andreas Fault and expect the Eastern Seaboard to break off and fall into the sea (like California)?? Perhaps the "Founding Fathers" who drew that one up were just planning ahead?!! ![]()

Camels were used in the Arizona desert as pack animals back in the 19th century. I don't know whether any have survived.
There was a Fort at Tyson Wells with a unit of Camel mounted Calvary. The Town is right on I10 and named Quartzsite where the Fort was located.
When the unit was disbanded, they did indeed release the "livestock" and hence the stories of herds of wild Camels. They are either "shy" or hiding down on the Yuma Proving Grounds (restricted military area), or extinct. It's been years since anyone I have talked to has seen one, and I've had campfire conversations with literally hundreds of "old timers" through the years. Many of who play darn good guitar and weave entertaining if not totally factual tales of prospecting and hard rock mining in the remote corners of "the Great Southwest".
It is illegal to refuse water to anyone who asks, and you'll be out riding your quad down some remote wash and come upon a camp way out in the middle of no-where.... and get called into camp to have a beverage (sometimes it is water, most times something cold and out of a bottle or can) and next thing you know you're swapping gossip and stories with new friends. You'll restock your hosts from you own cooler (the one you always have full and strapped to the luggage rack) and make a point of looking them up next time you are out that way. Even though chances are that they'll have moved camp ....... Maybe next year....

I used to spend my winters in Arizona, so while we are on the subject..... it is illegal to shoot or hunt Camels there. But like Zurf, have not seen any in the wild..... but there are rumours....
It is against the law for Women to wear pants in Prescott Arizona. But everyone can carry guns, so good luck enforcing that one without a showdown!
They also have a "domicile Law" that allows you to shoot and kill an intruder to your home (including uninvited guests)...... but a contradictory Law that says you can only defend yourself against an intruder who is armed with an "equal or lesser weapon"....... which brings up the question, does a nine iron trump crowbar in this instance???

I know of almost all the alcohol stuff. I was talking about odd or outdated unusaual laws. I found californias and other states by going too Ask.com you will be surprised what they have . Like you can not kill mice without a hunting license. It is against the law too own a housecat in the state of California!!.
Local ordinances are more commonly "strange" and for some reason stay on the books although they are outdated. My little town has one prohibiting the consumption of Coffee by, or serving Coffee to Women after 6:00 PM. ?
Tying your Horse or Team to a Lightpost is prohibited (I suppose fear of gas leak & fire was the concern here)..... so there is another that requires all businesses to provide "rails, posts, or other devices for securing livestock". There are a few "hitching rings" set into the sidewalks in the older section of town. An unwelcome surprise to the skateboarders (which are illegal on public sidewalks) as they are large enough to tie at least two pairs of horses.
Schools are required to provide shelter, hay and water to all horses ridden by students attending.

Re: Blue laws in your state, county, town etc. (34 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Unusual subject, but I'll bite.
First we have to clarify what a "Blue Law" is.....? OK I looked it up and don't see any that apply to Oregon, but as I understand it they are ordinances that prohibit certain activities on Sunday (as a religious day). That might not allow consumption or sale of booze before noon for instance, because all "good" folks should be in Church, not a Bar.
Now if you were referring to Laws that are still on the books even though they are outdated? We got a Few of those that never got repealed.
For instance: It is perfectly legal to walk down the street armed with pistol, shotgun, or rifle. AND enter ANY public building, school or office (except the Courthouse), OR place of business...... but you cannot carry a metal lunch pail on the sidewalk of downtown at any time! I guess "brown bags" are acceptable (unless it contains an open bottle on Sunday).

Thanks, TF,
Not speaking for NELA of course, but I tend to look at what's wrong with me in a humorous way. Tell me an Alzheimer's joke. I love 'em. Blog is the same way -- light hearted, pissed off sometimes, but never vulgar.

I would....... but for the life of me I can't seem to remember any. It runs on my Dad's side of the family, Mom's side all had heart problems, and my better half's tend towards blindness, loss of hearing and tremors! The kids' "Golden Years" will be a mess!

Snowden my friend, it has indeed been awhile! Pleased to see you back here among the Chordie Family.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting your site this morning over a cup of coffee..... that kinda stretched into three, maybe 4. The blog and illustrations do give a view of the person putting it all together and, all I can say is I'd be proud to "chalk up with you down at the Pit of an evening".
Good tunes, and I'll comment on those when I get a patch of time to give a serious listen.... as you say life gets in the way and my schedule is not slack this week so I'm forced to drop in here in short snippets between tasks (and sunbreaks). Spring is at the doorstep and nature sets the calendar if we want crops this season.
Take Care & check in often!

You might try making two disc recordings and use the ditering on one to find out what the difference is.
Someone has already done that and you can check it out here: http://productionadvice.co.uk/when-to-dither/
Along with several articles to support the premise and recommendations on the page.

Congrats Roger! Caution!..... collecting guitars can be addictive. Russell's got his Strats, and now you are on your way towards Teles. Usually it starts with just one or two as an "experiment"....... and then you have a whole wall devoted to hanging them. Then you work to keep them happy and provide strings, pick-up upgrades, perhaps a little polish or a new coat of paint, pedals and such fancy doo-dads. Then one day you discover that all your free time is spent tuning or dusting and caring for these "tenants" that don't say much but have demands that must be met. Once in awhile you'll drag home another, just so the ones you already have don't get lonely while you are "slaving away" to keep them warm and a roof over their heads.
Be Strong my Friend! It's a just a "phase"........... Maybe. ![]()

Re: Windows 10 (19 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
The only thing that I don't get, is why they aren't planning to upgrade XP users for free? Those are the "consumers" they need on board who are more likely to jump ship, and as I understand it, once you go to a Mac you won't want to go back. I'd be there, I just can't afford a Mac (well, maybe if we stopped buying guitars)!
Now, if Google came up with something that wasn't quite so internet dependent... I'd be jumping on that ship. I just don't think I'm ready to deal with a Chrome Book, although I've considered it quite a few times, as I find 99% of what I do IS actually online. It's that 1% of software that I use that keeps me on a PC (like recording).
Conclusion for me, if I didn't play guitar, I wouldn't need Microsoft. Hmmm... ... ... They need to get some music related software included!
Seems to me that they did an upgrade option to migrate to 7 from XP, and again from 7 to 8.0, but that was such an "ugly mess" that nobody hardly took them up on it. When 8.1 update 1 came out it would run well on older hardware that you would HAVE to upgrade to run 7..... so at least not everybody would need to buy a new PC (which folks like Intel are lamenting). Kind of got them back in the hunt for low-cost upgrading of Windows and that is a good thing.
Then there are us guys that jumped ship entirely to Linux, and by the way, Chrome and Android are both Linux based custom distros. We might not want to sign on to Windows ever! I can do most everything I used to do on Win7 on Ubuntu and there are plenty of applications to do it with as good or better. OK there is not a Netflix application (but there was) at the moment..... something to do with licensing. But if you NEED Windows applications you can run them in the Wine Virtual Machine inside the Linux shell.
Examples: Need MS Office = try Libre Office
Need Photoshop = Try Gimp
Need 3DSMax = Try Blender
Need Reaper or Pro-Tools = Try Ardour
Like Audacity = Use Audacity
Most everything is Free Too! And WiFi is optional, stuff runs on the device not the cloud, so if you have electrons.....

Where'd 9 go?
Bill
I heard that they bypassed 9 so's folks wouldn't get confused and think they'd resurrected Win 95 or some later version of it.
Amy, I was reading last night (in the wee hours) that the verbage has been changed from "customers" to "consumers"..... and specifically defined a difference between home and enterprise users. From what I gathered, if you are running "home or home premium" you are golden so far as the free upgrade goes. For those of us using "pro or enterprise" or are volume licensed (like businesses with many seats on one copy), and I was one of those who purchased like that for all the machines in our group of users (10). There is something else coming...... and it could be painful (or not).
Most of our hardware has been upgraded (or replaced) over the last couple of years and so almost everyone has migrated to 8.1+. But I'm an old guy who like many has their roots in a keyboard and mouse venue. Metro on anything not built for "touch" is cumbersome at best, and although 8.1 and likely 10 will run just fine on much of the older hardware out there that could run XP. The option of NOT having to change the way we navigate around our workspace will be a plus for taking advantage of the upgrade.

Re: Windows 10 (19 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Here's an article worth reading: http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10 … ed-copies/
My opinion is that Microsoft is heading to a "subscription" Business Model, and like Office 365 you will wind up paying annual fees to continue using and getting support for the operating system (it should be fairly low cost), and by "giving it away" for the first year (even to non-genuine users) you will find that you are locked into the new version and it will be difficult (if not impossible) to revert to your previous version. By doing so, they get all those that have been "stealing the use" back into a positive revenue stream and make paying customers out of those who were not.
Awhile back I had a failing power supply let the smoke out of the mainboard of my desktop running Windows 7 Pro. After a new power supply, board, and processor, my "genuine Windows" wouldn't work as it identified itself to Microsoft as invalid. The activation key was generated using unique identifiers of the hardware when initially activated, and I had exceeded the number of hardware changes that would allow me to do anything except buy another license for the software. With a new version of Windows coming down the pike, it didn't seem prudent to shell out the bucks for an operating system that was on the short list..... so I'll be watching how this shakes out with interest. The legal beagles up in Redmond are already waffling on how to deal with who should (or shouldn't) get what, and until I'm sure that 10 is a stable and viable improvement that is cost effective, I'll stay with Linux....... Thank You!

I did not know you were that talented Doug. Great duet!
Roger
Mark Hanson is a very talented local musician, as is Terry Robb, and that other fella is just the younger/better-looking/talented version of somebody who shares my name and slight resemblance to me..... which is why I wear a beard! www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMUDEAMyMis
The main reason for the links is that none of the stuff they're doing is all that technical, and certainly within the scope of many folks with appropriate doses of practice. The complexity of the music comes from multiple guitars playing simple parts together, and that is the point I was trying to get to.
Other things in common: Dads were Marines, same hair color and style, similar height & build, both from Portland, both play finger-style guitar, but he's got "Grammys" and gets to do it professionally..... and that's about where commonality ends. But you have to have something to aspire to, and that level is somewhere close to where I'd like to get before my body parts start to fail.
A long way to go!
Edited to add the Terry Robb link.

Re: Alaska picks (23 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I think I have a set of Alaska picks around here somewhere..... they were plastic and yes did need a little shaping to get them to work well (at least for me). Can't hardly imagine metal ones! The good thing about them is that you get the "feel" of using your natural nails, and they protect your own until they get long enough to use alone.
My nails grow pretty fast and get filed almost daily, which stimulates growth. But I should add that there should be no stigma about having gels done professionally if it's within your budget. Doing it yourself with your non-dominant hand is trickier than it looks! We've got enough musicians around town that salons don't even blink when you walk in the door and request only one hand done. Could be a niche for a nail technician to set up a stall inside a larger music store and schedule a couple of days a week......could stay real busy!

Re: Strumming Patterns (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Howdy again RC, see you've been around awhile. Us older folks (especially those with some formal music in the past) tend to put too much weight on timing, beat and measure.... comes from conditioning towards playing in ensemble where count is important so everyone gets there at the same time. As a solo, you have the freedom to scribble outside the lines quite a bit, and keeping in mind that music like poetry is interpretive. Blues, jazz, and a lot of modern music has structure that is flexible that way. Keep doing what you're doing and make it your own (to use a cliche).
Keep it loose, make it fun, and don't sweat the small stuff.

How to I transpose guitar music to ukulele music?
Welcome to Chordie! Pick a song from the index or any of the public songbooks, on the right side of the page you will see the light blue menu box and simply choose Ukelele (and your tuning) in the transpose section. It should automatically change the chords and grids to reflect your choice.

Ran into an interesting variation of a Thai recipe once that caught me off guard. Some kind of white fish (tarpon?) poached in coconut milk, glazed with a citrus sauce very much like a mix of grapefruit and orange with a touch of salt and sprinkled with a bit of fresh chopped lemon basil.....Yum
