There are probably more pick-ups than guitars, single "hot" coils, humbuckers, the list is too long.

About coils, this might be a more "professional" question, what are the common CRITERIA (is this the correct expression?) used by people who love to work with guitars, like changing coils, and experimenting.

- How are we able to know if we buy or try a coil or humbucker?
- ABOUT SOUND: what is needed to buy, or (re)place the ideal coils. Playing an electric guitar, you want to have the "ideal" sound. The sound is like told very, very important.
WHICH ELECTRIC GUITAR, USING COILS gives the best sound?
WHICH ELECTRIC GUITAR, USING HUMBUCKERS gives the best sound?
IS A COMBINATION, COILS & HUMBUCKERS BETTER? Like PRS 513 = HUM -COIL-HUM.
I started thinking about this since I replaced my GIBSON LP CUSTOM 1968's HUMBUCKERS by SINGLE COILS: P-94's. They had only the neck P-94, and I had to wait 2 months. I can tell you this: the sound was overwhelming.
This topic is more in function of the music style you play.
- JAZZ = A SOLID BODY (or Hollow Body) = SINGLE or Humbuckers?
- BLUES = single coils, like a Gibson LP, with P-90, or a FENDER stratocaster, standard are best choice?
- POP/ROCK ? This is in fact the reason of this topic, the coils + influence on the sound.

A lot of us know probably these songs:
- THE STREETS OF LONDON by RALPH MCTELL
- RAIN AND TEARS, by APHRODITES CHILD.

What you should do, and it's funny too, when you play guitar with a friend, one starts to sing STREETS OF LONDON, the second starts to sing RAIN AND TEARS.
These songs are an almost perfect match.
If you know something about classic music, maybe you know PACHELBEL'S CANON, play that on piano or violin and again a match.
I have PROCOL HARUM songs, one live album, where he thanks his CO-WRITER, J.S.BACH.
Do you know other matches, classic, or old music dressed in a new costume?

Thanks "cruel heart". I live day by day, and most of them are fine. All my friends are here, this is my social life. Me once the biggest party animal, who started to wake up at 18.00h, and laughing when they told me to go to sleep before 22.00h THE HIGHLIGHTS started at 10 pm, now, bed between 21.00-21.30pm, and early in the morning: busy, busy.
I love silly word games like this one, you should try, like BONO to BONOBO, 1 second. It isn't really time consuming.
THANKS

DANCER, I am not a "music genius", but I play pretty well, EXCEPT KEEPING MY RHYTHM", but that's another problem.
I am able to change quit fast chords, even getting more than once comment or critics that I make it more complicated, like taking a chord, leave some fingers in position and change 1 or 2 fingers to take that chord. BAS HABIT? I don't know. The only, personal advise I can give is, you know how to play A C D E C G, my suggestion is to try now minor chords, like Em. It is an E chord where you let your 2 fingers on the second and third string, second fret, and you DON'T use the finger on the 4th string, fret one. A --> Am, Gm is more difficult, so start the chords who are a lot easier.
- practice the chords you know as much as you can, and SWITCH, like E to A to D and back.
- you have "online chords" like www.chordbook.com, use chords and once it starts to go better, you will have a lot more self confidence which improves it more.

U2

ME2
- BONOBO: singer                       BONO
- THE PLEDGE: guitars                 THE EDGE
- DYLAN TACOMA: bass               ADAM CLAYTON
-  MARRY LULLEN: drums             LARRY MULLEN

We all have that feeling, from the very FIRST STRUM, you know immediately the song and who performs it.
I really mean, LESS THAN 5 SECONDS.
A second item is: FROM THE MOMENT A SONG STARTS PLAYING, YOU KNOW WITHOUT THINKING, WHICH BAND IT IS.
My top list is simple andd short:
- THE ROLLING STONES = THE RIFF masters, that's why I call KEITH, Keith Riffards.
From the very first moment, you recognize the master himself = his unbelievable FENDER TELECASTER sound, fat sound, I believe that The Stones have the most recognizable sound on earth, no way to confuse that sound with another band.
That's also the most important fact why Keith Richards is in my TOP 5 list of the greatest guitar players.
So many great riffs: JUMPING JACK FLASH, BROWN SUGAR, HONKEY TONK WOMAN. Satisfaction to, but this one doesn't start with a riff.

Come on guys, share your "RIFFS"+"THE ARTISTS".

DINO48, A miracle happened. Saturday evening, my daughter (She's a real beauty, go to myspace, search gitaardocphil, and you'll see some pictures of her, give me your opinion on this big_smile  lol)
and boyfriend came to visit me, their OLD, CRIPPLE DADDY, and he asked a flashlight, to come back 30 minutes later with a 1/2 plastic cube with a paper, GIBSON LP CUSTOM P-94 (= P-90, but bigger to fit in the cavity of a humbucker), he went back and 15 minutes later he had found the other 1/2 cubus, with TWO, a little bit rusty humbucker pick-ups.
Is this still NORMAL?
- They ask up to 10.000$ for an original pair 1968 LP custom humbuckers. A 1968 custom: price range 15.000-20.000$
- A 1969 or 1970 custom, 5000-8000$

THE DOORS: little information, very unusual, they didn't have a bass player. Bass lines were played by Ray Manzarek on his Fender Rhodes Bass keyboard, using 1 hand, the other hand playing other keyboards.

THE WINDOWS
- MOJO RISIN': singer, frontman             JIM MORRISON
- ZANY EARMARK: keyboards                  RAY MANZAREK
- MORED JOHNSEN: drums, percussion     JOHN DENSMORE
- TIGER REBROKER                                 ROBERT KRIEGER

NIRVANA

VAN RAIN
- KURT BIANCO: singer, guitars      Kurt Cobain
- GROVE DAHL: drums                   Dave Grohl
- KEVIN COLORISTS: bass             Krist Novoselik
BIGGEST HIT: Smells like teen toes

There are probably a lot more, but there are a lot of moments, unforgettable moments. Like:
- ELVIS PRESLEY = loved by youngsters, cursed by their parents, caused by his act.
- BOB DYLAN went ELECTRIC, it must have been a "horrible experience" for Dylan
- THE BEATLES = SGT. PEPPER
- WOODSTOCK 1969 = No comment (August 1969)
- ROLLING STONES = The "infamous" ALTAMONT concert, with performers as Jefferson Airplane, CSN&Y, Santana, Flying Burrito Brothers, and 300.000 people. Grateful Dead was asked to play before the Stones, but they canceled at the last minute.
During the Rolling Stones performance, Hell's Angels By some accounts, the Angels were hired to be security by the Rolling Stones on recommendation from the Grateful Dead for $500 and free beer, they had provided security at Grateful Dead shows in the past without reported violence.
ONE THING having such a crowd = Crowd management proved to be difficult. Many spectators were injured and four died. The ANGELS, where young, no leaders were present, and they became more and more aggressive and violent during the day. They also used sawed-off pool cues in order to control the crowd, or aimed at troublemakers with their bikes at full throttle, causing serious injuries. After one of the Angels' motor bikes was knocked over, the Angels became even more aggressive, even toward the performers onstage. Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane was knocked unconscious following an altercation with an Angel on stage, as seen in the documentary film Gimme Shelter. That's where the Grateful Dead decided to leave. A guy named MEREDITH HUNTER, 18 years old Afro-American became involved in an altercation with some Hells Angels and drew a long-barreled revolver. It is clear that Hunter drew his weapon before he was stabbed the first time. He was stabbed five times in total and kicked to death.
All this is filmed, the movie's name HELTER SHELTER. I know, a lot of information here, just to show and compare with WOODSTOCK.
That ALTAMONT concert is generally considered as the END OF AN ERA, THE HIPPIEculture..
- LED ZEPPELIN = ruling everything in the 7ties
- SEX PISTOLS
- THE DEAD of JOHN LENNON
Do you know more or new information? What I wrote can be find on the web, just the names, but I love to hear COMMENT, YOUR LIST. I wrote a lot about ALTAMONT, because it's so  special.

THE WHO

THE WHAT
- Roger DALTON = singer                          Roger Daltrey
- MOON TICKET = DRUMMER (deceased)    Keith Moon
- JOHNNY WHISTLE = BASS (deceased)      JOHN ENTWISTLE
- PEND WHETSTONE guitar                         PETE TOWNSHEND

THE TIME? I had a carcrash in 2000, I'm a medical doc, I started again in July 2001, to stop finally end 2004, destroying myself.
- 32 fractures left foot + ankle
- an exploded vertebra in 4 pieces, 1 piece in my spinal chord.
A NON FUNNY situation. But I have time.
Is it time consuming, not really. It "hits" me, a band name, names of the members, and I have a fantastic anagram program. In fact it takes me about 5 minutes. You need to be inspired suddenly, and the rest is "peanuts". But IF you start thinking, it can be time consuming. But writing a topic, answering topics, like a decent cheap guitar, THAT'S time consuming, because I want to give accurate information = surfing, on line music stores, finding that guitar on youtube, but I love my job here, it's great, but I can't stop, resulting in pain I can't describe.

100% agree, it is a crime to invade a country without a reason. You forgot to mention 1 country, the USA, NOT THE PEOPLE, but the "firearms factories" "oil". WHY invading IRAQ and thinking about invading IRAN.
I am really intrigued that all the so called "WESTERN NATIONS" don't have death penalty except...
It get WORSE, where is the "IDEA" of the OLYMPICS?
Today: OLYMPICS = POLITICS. So MY OLYMPIC SONG should be BUSH, with the song BOMB.

It's a reissue of a deleted topic, a BAD written topic.
The question is:
- Dreadnoughts are far the most popular models, they sound loud too
- Orchestras + Jumbos are softer, deep warm tone.

I read a lot of comments, and a NON DREADNOUGHT seems to be THE FINGER PICKING GUITAR.
- WHY
- WHAT will be the BIGGEST difference in sound playing, as example, a MARTIN D-15 versus a MARTIN OO-15?
This topic is written because most of us have probably a dreadnought and I am really interested in when you use an orchestra model.
Is it a personal choice, is it because the "sound"?
I have a JUMBO, and the only difference I can find is that some songs sound better with a Jumbo.
IS THIS TRUE? Please help me, it's a PAINFUL thing to go in music stores, due to my condition.
2 months ago, I could play and compare, but I left because I fainted away by pain.

I think a lot about What can be the most ideal band, giving us the best sound.
- Bands, with 3 members, like CREAM: 1 GUITAR, 1 BASS, 1 DRUM, singing members. Is A lead singer who  DOESN'T play an instrument NEEDED? or is he a "ballast"
Financial point = the more members, the less $$ each
- Bands 4 members, 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum, and they all can sing. (MY FAVORITE)
- Bands 5 members, see 4 + singer
- Bands more than 5, see UB40, or an extra piano.
The strange thing is, I DON'T KNOW A LOT OF BANDS with MOR than 5 members.
Sometimes I am dreaming of the result by a band existing of 4 guitar players, playing different BUT in perfect harmony, 1 even 2 drummers, and bass, same, 1 or 2
INSTRUMENTS I DON'T LIKE, a few guys, often destroying a song by trying toblow everybodyaway with trumpets.
I DON'T like SAXOPHONES (even if it's invented by Adolph Sax, a Belgium).
A FLUTE? I was listening to JETHRO TULL, the so,g AQUALONG=GREAT, but the flute?

- WHAT INSTRUMENTS YOU DON'T LIKE?
- WHAT IS YOUR "IDEAL" BAND = members, instruments.

About the Beatles NO COMMENT, probably described in 2308 on the same level as MOZART, BEETHOVEN.
But do you know the RUTLES? A concept from musician Neil Innes (ex-Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band).
Monthy Python related.
If you listen to the songs from their album ALL YOU NEED IS CASH, the similarity with original BEATLE songs is amazing.
Invite friends, put that album in your CD player, and all your friends will think that it's an album performed by the BEATLES. Follow this link to youtube LISTEN and JUDGE it.
I would be pleased to see your opinions.

I have 20 songs, from TENACIOUS D and they are not bad at all.
Same if you listen to "Spinal Tap", they have good songs.

It is maybe a so called "personal choice topic", but I wanted to see how MORE THAN ONE magazine, testing guitars concludes.
What I heard is that there isn't THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE, between HIGH priced guitars like Martin, Gibson, Taylor.
They use almost the same wood, and when you "see" them in action, and for sure when you play Electro-Acoustic guitar, using an acoustic amp, the sounds are very close.

About electric guitars, if you use a 100W amp, and floorboards with all kind of effects, will you hear a lot of difference between a WESLEY Les Paul style,  Epiphone or Gibson. PLAYING with volume very loud, using heavy effects?

The only thing I can add is:
- Some people are blessed with a great talent, this is found in every profession, like a MD, I am still proud that most of my diagnostics were correct and most of hospitals knew me AND my diagnosis.
That's all history, I had a talent, a lot of others have a talent, like TIGER WOODS in golf, or LANCE ARMSTRONG on a bike. The BIG POINT IS: a lot of TALENTED people DON'T USE their talent.
If you are blessed with a talent USE IT. USING IT = HARD WORK, A LOT OF TRANSPIRATION, a lot of practising, and that is the worst part, giving up so much to reach the top.

About bands, musicians, most of us only see the bright side, but when you enjoy a concert, the players and crew are working very hard.

SEMPER VERITAS.
Fooling and cheating people is older than Latin, they go back thousands of years ago. One anecdote: In India, they sold "FUR" coats, in stead of 10.000$, the price was between 1500-2500$.
The fur was REAL, the method wrong, after 1 year, the fur coat started to loose hairs, because they didn't use the same process to make fur coats in Canada, USA, Europe. LOW COST process, very low cost for making it (kids, women, receiving almost nothing) and furs, coming straight from a farm, a mink farm. Even then they can cheat you by rabbit fur. If you don't know anything  it is not difficult to cheat others. Cheating is as old as mankind. And about guitars, who will analyze a "so called fake US made 400$ Fender?"

DOLL, I teached RUSSELL everything, before he was convinced that THE STORK delivered babies.
big_smile lol   lol

The conception, isn't that amazing? If the little sperm, responsible for me, wasn't first, I wouldn't be ME.
Also, once a sperm (sometimes 2 = non identical twin) enters the "egg" cell, the wall closes and all the others are smashed against it.
Go and see http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl … y_try.html

Some say it is true, others say it's bulls***. But I am so intrigued in the fact what happens if another sperm wins the race. YOU won't EXIST, don't think too much about that, you get crazy by being a "philosopher"

Using powerful media, like MYSPACE, YOUTUBE, giving us the opportunity to put our own songs on these sites, and access is easy.
You see bands, artists in abundance.
Some "STILL UNKNOWN BANDS" have a huge number of visitors.
So knowing this, posting songs on these sites, watching, hearing great songs, made me thinking if RECORD companies are still needed.
If you give people the opportunity to DOWNLOAD songs, for 0,89$, all the profits are for you, a band, without a CONTRACT.
My guess is that we don't need record companies soon.

Agree, we can discuss about PUBLICITY, AIRPLAY, PRODUCING, but on the other hand, there are "PC-wizards"using software, recording tools to create a COMPLETE product. It might be time consuming, a studio is maybe more time consuming, but you can make a TECHNICAL perfect song, sitting at home.
So WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

Ken, thanks for answering this topic, which I consider as a quit difficult one.
I found a fantastic AND realistic description, here a link
http://www.scribd.com/doc/110936/Music- … generation
- 50ties: Elvis Presley
- 60ties: The Beatles
- 70ties: Led Zeppelin
- 80ties: U2
- 90ties: NIRVANA
At least you can tell that the list is accurate, giving us names of BANDS who changed a lot and had a huge influence on others. The 70ties, I should add the Sex Pistols too.
But NOW, it's already 2008, can you believe it, I can't find a band like previous bands.
Most of the real famous bands are busy since years.
Agree, THE GORILLAZ, KAISER CHIEFS, OASIS, ARTIC MONKEYS, COLDPLAY, MUSE but some y exists since years. About the Artic Monkeys, they were pioneers in a matter od speaking, because they achieved their success through fan-made demo tapes and online file sharing. They were heralded as one of the first acts to come to the public attention via the Internet.
SUGABABES, they do have a lot of success too, formed in 1998.
BUT REAL BIG BANDS, like The Who, The Kinks, The Bee Gees, I am afraid that those days are gone.

I think both.
I INCLUDE ALSO " the TRIBUTE guitars"
- Fender Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Yngwie Malmsteen
worse are the relics, did you see the RORY GALLAGHER Fender?

ARE THESE GUITARS REAL BETTER? Those who don't need a guitar, they get their own line, relic.
Eric Johnson, Buddy Guy, even a new Stratocaster, better JAZZ MASTER for Elvis Costello.
It gets worse: Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition Jeff Beck Tribute Esquire Electric Guitar (White Blonde) = 10.500$ (= 6.600€, I nice trade, I buy one in the USA) or Fender Master Salute Stratocaster LTD for 5799$ = 3600€, THIS IS THE PRICE YOU'LL FIND more than once in an EUROPEAN store. WHAT Fender would you buy. Am I right telling that sooner or later Fender will feel the REPERCUSSION, of this OVER-PRODUCING. On the other hand they are probably smart to sell you a TRIBUTE for 5000$, and EXACTLY the same, but non tribute for $2000.

If I buy a Fender, and if I have money I might buy a Fender Custom Shop 58 Strat Relic Electric Guitar for 3848$ (= € 2500) also still a high priced strat in Belgium, but for this one, you will pay 3500-4000€
Gibson endorsers: Jeff Beck (again) Peter Green, Jimmy Page, WOULD they trade their proudly advertised guitar, made entirely as they want, against a standard LP 1959, or 1960?
Endorsement is a way to "CHEAT" people. I PLAY ON MY "JIMMY PAGE " Gibson and blablabla.
Some brands are lucky like PRS, with Santana. How many players knew PRS, before 1995?
All brands have endorsers, some succeed, others don't.
