Is there still a place for a DOBRO?
I am not at all familiar with "resonance guitars"
WHAT I KNOW IS: There are 2 types of dobros: square neck and round neck.
The square neck seems to be used more in Bluegrass.
The round neck more in blues.
WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT DOBRO GUITARS?

As RUSSEL told, there is an 100% IDENTICAL TOPIC. You can check it. Maybe we can add your topic to the other topic. But to answer your question, I have 23 guitars (including a Fender Stratocaster US 1964. If I have to choose:
- PRS Custom 24
- GIBSON SJ-200 Monana Gold
- MARTIN

bigrinwv: I adore what you wrote. Some of my topics are "think hard" topics. My problem is the fact that my brains absorb so many things.
To be honest, I really suffer, having these absorbing condition. It was great when I was still at the university, to become a MD. It takes 7 years here. (How many years in the USA, I don't know.)
Due to my medical condition, I don't and can't work no longer, I even stopped to go visiting a former patient. It's to painful, I am very sensitive the active medical career is FINISHED. I still know a lot and I still use this knowledge.
I know that a lot of topics aren't that easy, but isn't it nice to see people reacting, leading to a nice discussion. That's me, and it's difficult to change.

Yes indeed Boot, I mentioned it in this topic. BUT will there be difference in sound?

HEY Cytania, this proves what I told many times.
If you want a guitar, YOUTUBE gives us the opportunity to see and hear them. I admit that some songs aren't good-sounding, so we all have the possibility to listen and see a particular brand, or a guitar IN ACTION.
This will make your choice easier.

George Harisson & Eric Clapton were best friends.
- WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS
- BADGE, a CREAM song by Clapton & HARRISSON.

SOLO CAREERS: In fact only McCartney AND Wings were really great, having some huge hits too.
JOHN LENNON, is the "MYSTIC" man, giving us one of the greatest songs: IMAGINE.
The song MOTHER is a song who "penetrates" in your heart. I still am really touche by the way he sings that song. A CRY for his mother.

AWESOME: Why classic rock bands? Because they are CLASSICS. I'm an old fart °1955 AND from Europe. Like just above me AN EUROPEAN, so I might be sticking in the 60-ties/70-ties. Although I was MD on one of the greatest rock festivals. And as posted by TIBERNIUS: there are some groups that I under-estimated, some bands can "fit" really well in over-estimated bands or performers. I really worked hard on this topic, at least 1 hour for a topic that can be answered in a few minutes. I will add some more info.
The more I read it, the difficult it gets. WE ARE ALL "VENTILATING" our opinion
I GIVE YOU SOME MORE:
OVER-RATED
1) MICHAEL JACKSON. WHAT DID HE PROVE except for his "copied" moonwalk, see J.L. HOOKER
2) HAPPY MONDAYS
3) STONE ROSES
4) PRINCE
5) SPRITNEY BEARS. BRITNEY SPEARS (bypass terrine = anagram)

UNDER-RATED
1) NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
2) QUEEN
3) BEE GEES (if you see how many beautiful songs they composed.) = it was "not-done to be a fan of the BEE GEES
4) LYNARD SKYNARD
5) MARVIN GAYE
2)
-
Now HALF CHORDIE WILL BE ATTACKING OR EVEN NUKE ME
- Jimi HENDRIX: what did he prove? FANTASTIC GUITAR PLAYER, OVER-SKILLED, but what did he contribute.
- THE

The UNDER-RATED list, is about really great bands, who wrote several hits, but in a list of let's say the 10 greatest bands, you will often not find them.
It's a personal opinion I posted, so I do see already nice answers. Feel free to judge, share and giving critics, better what would be YOUR list.

THANKS friends.
My theory about a less better sound, using a CUTAWAY is this true?
I believe that "this non regular shape guitars" compared to a normal shape, some brands, I believe that a MARTIN dreadnought compared to the cutaway model, is producing a different sound.
IS THIS TRUE OR FALSE.
Except for professional players, or the good amateur, who give now and then a gig, when I play acoustic, I play NOT electro-acoustic. Sometimes, very rare, I have an Electro-acoustic MARTIN, a D-1, without a cutaway.

Quit interesting topic. I found this:
ACOUSTIC GUITARS:
list of the guitars most commonly employed by folk's greatest players.
Link http://folkmusic.about.com/od/toptens/tp/TenGuitars.htm
What about:
ELECTRIC GUITARS:
- My all time favourite guitar is PRS, I have 5 PRS models, and one SE model: PRS SE Billy Martin. This guitar compared to my Gibson SG Menace sounds better.
- There are a few guitars, whit a price > 100.000$
- GIBSON LP STANDARD: 1958-1960, and having a fabulous price tag. I followed the standard 58-60 since 7 years, at that time already 25.000$, and I admit, seeing this price in 2000, I  should have bought one. Finally I didn't, but if.. in a 7 year period:  600% more, in price.
- GRETSCH "White Penguin" born in the 50-ties: 200.000$. If you know relatives or an older man who used to play, and they ask 50.000, you should buy it.
- OTHER GREAT BRANDS, but most are forgotten.
a) BENEDETTO
b) Us made HAMERS
c) STROMBERG
d) MOSRITE
e) DUESENBERG

By subdivisions, I mean the little brothers made by great brands as a CHEAP LINE.

- MARTIN ===> SIGMA
- GIBSON ===> EPIPHONE
- FENDER ===> Squier
Do you know other "subdivisions?"

Go to youtube, search sigma acoustic guitars, giving you a possibility to hear the guitar in action.
As other chordians mentioned, it's a MARTIN guitar, a cheap line.
All laminated, except for the top. You can't compare it with Martin, even the fact that a sigma isn't bad at all.

- A FROG ready to put a straw in his a** and blow air in that straw.
- I was told AND read, that he removes sometimes a beautiful AAA+ top, to put an "ED ROMAN" top, of course SOUNDING A LOT BETTER. He removes beautiful GIBSON tops to put his own top.
CRITICS: ALL THE BIG BRANDS JUST WANT YOUR MONEY, HE WANTS TO TRANSFORM YOUR IDIOT FENDER, GIBSON into an ED ROMAN GUITAR.

WHO KNOWS OR HAS EXPERIENCE WITH ED ROMAN?

MY NUMBER ONE IS STILL PRS aka PAUL REED SMITH. For me this is the most versatile guitar, having an typical own sound, but switching positions, you approach Gibson (I believe that McCARTHY) was a former CEO of Gibson, but worked later with paul reed smith, meaning that with his knowledge and Paul's skills resulted in great guitars.

Thanks jay, you know that I have plenty of time, and despite searching and searching (if you use google and you change 1 word or place that word at the end, you will get different results) and since months I wanted to know an answer, even in a guitar store, they don't know the difference, it is making me nervous. About lacquer, I know that using this method raises the price.
Is the difference between an electric with lacquer versus a noon lacquer significant too?

I don't have an acoustic having a cutaway. I think that a cutaway gives more "access" to higher frets.
WITHOUT USING AN ACOUSTIC AMP, is there a significant difference in the SOUND?
Using as example a TAYLOR, 2 models real close to eachother. Isn't an electro acoustic Taylor always a cutaway, but if YOU PLAY ACOUSTIC, on an ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC DO YOU ALWAYS USE YOUR ACOUSTIC AMP? I don't think so, and this is the reason of this question: Is it correct to say that the sound is different?
I do hope someone can help me.

Well fellow chordians, maybe this topic existed, but I never found a similar list, so here is my list.
MOST OVER-RATED BANDS
1) U2
2) RADIOHEAD
3) THE CURE
4) THE SMITHS
5) PAUL WELLER SOLO, AND IN THE JAM, & STYLE COUNCIL.

MOST UNDERESTIMATED BANDS
1) THE WHO
2) THE KINKS
3) THE PRETENDERS
4) THE DOORS
5) JETHRO TULL

Who can claim this title?
Speaking of the period: contemporary songwriters, so NO MOZART, BEETHOVEN,  BACH.

We can also add famous composers like IRVING BERLIN, LEONARD BERNSTEIN, GEORGE GERSHWIN, LEIBER & STOLLER. Who CAN FORGET THAT IMMORTAL SONG "WHITE CHRISTMAS" by Irving BERLIN?
So what I loved was opinions, answers, and MORE INFORMATION, sharing it here in this topic. I can't remember if we had already a topic about "The Greatest Songwriters."
HIT MACHINES like STOCK, AITKIN AND WATERMAN responsible for a LOT of HITS, dominating the British (and European) pop charts from the early eighties to the early nineties, with their saccarine throwaway nonsense. I don't doubt: THEY ARE very talented people, having an almost spooky ability to write catchy melodies. MACHINES: WHY = "Never Gonna Give You Up? (Rick Astley's biggest hit) was written in 4 minutes. They wrote like 10 songs a day, resulting in maybe one great song, matter of speaking. About 65 tracks made the charts. Kylie Minogue, Banarama...
READ THIS, following the link http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1100933.
They should have a prominent place in my list, but I prefer the NON-PREFAB composers.

1) John Lennon/Paul McCartney (The Beatles)
2) Bob Dylan
3) Jagger and Richards
4) Beach Boys (BRIAN WILSON)
5) Don Henley/Glenn Frey (The Eagles)
6) Ray Davies (The Kinks)
7) Bee Gees (Barry, Robin & the late Maurice Gibb)
SO FAR MY LIST, WHAT IS YOURS?

Thanks RUSS, but it's AMAZING to see in a top 10 50% of the songs & artists are X ft Y or
RUSSEL ft GITAARDOCPHIL.
WHAT about this phenomenon?
- Is it about $$$$$$$$$$$$, X ft Y, OR because Y's popularity has gone?

TEX, so you share my opinion in fact: except for the V, I knew it was vintage but if I put these guitars in a row:
- Martin D-35
- Martin D-41
- Martin D-42
- Martin D-45 (NO VINTAGE), I HAVEN'T A CLUE WHY, USING THE SAME WOODS, the prices are so high, and different. There must be another reason except for the inlays?
Do they have a different bracing?

I love big fat Germans on holiday in Thailand, in search for "love", and it get worse, they do wear a String.
If your tuner gives wrong information, try to tune your guitar "BY EAR", or go to some websites showing a guitar tuner on line. I have a FENDER tubing device and a KORG. Even on my amp is a tuner and on every floorboard. THERE IS ALWAYS A DIFFERENCE between every tuner.
I was in my music store yesterday, I asked about Gibson robotic: they had 10 robotics GONE IN ONE DAY. They tune automatic, provide a lot more, and for those who hate "automatic" you can do the same as on a non robotic Gibson. They seem to sound great. Here some links:
- http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/
I really hope this helps.

1) Pickups: smoky-coil 490R & 498T brass stud humbuckers
2) Pickups: 490R Alnico magnet humbucker, 498T Alnico magnet humbucker

GIBSON SG: They can be found equipped with = SMOKY COIL HUMBUCKERS (490R & 498T)
They can be found equipped with = ALNICO MAGNET HUMBUCKERS (490R & 198T

Except from the price, CAN SOMEONE BE SO KIND TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE?
Thanks, I've really searched as a fool (I am one) to FIND OUT MORE.

If you read the top 10, 80% of the songs is like: 50cent ft Eminem, or Jay Z ft miss Eliott.
In fact a lot of X, ft Z.
What's the reason of all this?
You find them in every combination.

First some information. CLAPTON = a CHAMELEON. He started as a not so self insured fellow, with JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS. Back in the early sixties, THE BLUESBREAKERS and ALEXIS CORNER gave us some of the best guitar players on the world, in most of the cases followed by 1 or 2 years Yardbirds.
# Eric Clapton
# and Jack Bruce (both later in Cream),
# Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood (later all in Fleetwood Mac),
# Mick Taylor (later in The Rolling Stones),
# Harvey Mandel, Walter Trout, Larry Taylor (later in Canned Heat),
# Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Randy Resnick, Aynsley Dunbar, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser (Free), Chris Mercer, Henry Lowther, Johnny Almond and Jon Mark (later of Mark-Almond).
AN AMAZING LIST.
ALEXIS KORNER WAS THE OTHER ONE:.
musicians as Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Long John Baldry and attrackting some others including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Rod Stewart, John Mayall and Jimmy Page. I believe that at that time everybody has played with everybody.
BUT HIS BEST SONGS? MAYBE 2 LISTS: ROCK/BLUES and BALLADS
- ROCK:
1) CROSSROADS
2) LAYLA
3) BADGE
- BALLADS
1) LET IT GROW
2) TEARS IN HEAVEN
3) WONDERFUL TONIGHT

NO, is it worth to buy the DVD?
I love what you wrote: "they still have it after 37 years." I know that they split because of their 3 strong characters, but the "chemistry" doesn't go away.
They offered a FORTUNE to see a Beatles reunion, even without Lennon, they suggested Julian LENNON. He looks very much like JOHN, and when he had finally a big hit, closing your eyes and listening to the voice = a LENNON voice. So strange how people can have a large DNA portion from one of the parents.
About CLAPTON: he got 3 SUPER GROUPS= CREAM, BLIND FAITH, DEREK AND THE DOMINOES.
Which is the best? I don't  know, maybe the day that Ocean's Boulevard was released?
