Great! But how do people play an ukulele? are there special chords? Also a question about the BIG MEXICAN GUITARS? Wood, style of playing. They look very funny sometimes, watching a little Mexican playing it. You can see the top of his SOMBRERO and his SHOES.

Boot, in Europe there is also a NAMM in Frankfurt GERMANY. Can you enter there as "private person"? About the humbuckers you mentioned, never heard of them.
By the way what is that SG project?
Do you still built guitars? I would love to learn it, but due to my physical condition it's impossible.
I do hope to come back to the USA in 2009, and it would be so nice to visit some of you there.
Do you use equipment to analyse the sound of a guitar? And what kind of wood YOU suggest to make a guitar?

Thanks Cytania, I had about 15 years ago a GIBSON LES PAUL STUDIO, in 1996!! At that time, entering a music store, they started to "enlarge" their collection. Before, even in the 80-ties, you had only a few brands like GIBSON and FENDER. I know there were topics about WHY a Gibson or Fender, my answer is simple: OVEREXPOSURE. MTV Europe started, videoclips and guess: Gibson & Fender. I wasn't that interested in acoustics, but I had and still have a YAMAHA FG-300, price end 70-ties: 300$. I loved to play that Yamaha, and kept dreaming about Electrics. So 17 years later, a Gibson LP Studio (for 500$ via airport customs, a high ranked friend, also for my) Marshall Valvestate. I was "settled". Too much work, in 1996 a Martin HD-28 (700$) from a person needing instant cash (he asked me first if I could loan the money, but I was too much ripped-of, and I wasn't an ATM machine. This was always a HUGE problem, the fact that I helped, treated 35% of my patients, asking (example) 20$ in stead of 30$, the same price they got back from our social security. (I calculated the never received money = enough to buy a house cash). I had my "specialities" Laser & Loosing weight + anti-cellulitis machine, worked a lot (75h/week). Finally I started to play more and more, and my way to check an electric was sitting on an amp, volume, tone identical, and trying a few guitars. The sound is absorbed by your a**= you could feel the guitar. BEST choice (we were 3 people) and unanimous= PRS, a VERY EXPENSIVE out of category guitar, about 5500$ IN EUROPE!! But some months later, same guitar, other store, 3 months old 2750$ got for my studio 1200$, and HAPPY I was. But here is it more about acoustics. If you look to the higher price range, MARTIN, GIBSON, TAYLOR use for some guitars the SAME WOOD, what is so DIFFERENT: NECK: important or not, bracings maybe. About machines to analyse the sound, I think it is an "oscilloscope" to analyse the sound waves, but I'm not sure..
Thanks cyt, you are a very nice person, in who I trust a lot.

I adore the "UNDERESTIMATED" Beach Boys song TEARS IN THE MORNING.
Also some BEE GEES songs. I am speaking about 2001 when Napster was a must have and audiogalaxy.
100% free downloads at that time, before the trials, I had plenty of time, being at home (lived by mum, with my ex-girlfriend) where my office used to be. I have 22 CD'S, only BEE GEES. It took me months, finding song, on a never released album.
In stead of the best (I had some of their albums) I made a second best.
These guys wrote great songs, but it was "not done" to confess that you loved them.
So "don't forget to remember" "Israel" and "walking back to Waterloo" (both from TRAFALGAR)

http://www.woolsonsoundcraft.com/tonewo … woods.html
A very interesting link: a guide for tonewoods.

ELECTRIC GUITAR:
Using heavy HARD WOOD/SOFT WOOD: Example: a Fender build with softer wood will sound different than a Fender build with hard wood. WHO or HOW can you see or hear the difference?
On a certain moment, plugging in, your Electric guitar, using a POWERFUL AMP and effects such as distortion I DOUBT IF YOU HEAR A DIFFERENCE between a US Fender - MX Fender - Squier or STAGG. I only know that SOFT wood absorbs more
ACOUSTIC:
This is the most delicate and most important and here you need to compare by playing and listening.
- BACK & SIDES:= Rosewood is used a lot, but what about walnut, mahogany, maple, koa?
Brazilian Rosewood: is it THAT much better than East Indian rosewood? CAN A HUMAN EAR HEAR A DIFFERENCE?
- GUITAR TOP: I see that spruce is often used, but I HAVEN'T a clue about the different spruce types, like GERMAN spruce, Sitka Spruce, Englemann Spruce, Adirondack Spruce ALSO Mahogany.
- NECK: fret board included, ebony, again rosewood. IS THE NECK as IMPORTANT as a TOP or SIDES and BACK? IS the neck CONTRIBUTING to the sound?
HOW CAN YOU HEAR THE DIFFERENCE?
IS THERE A WAY TO MEASURE SOUND WAVES?

Alvee thanks for your comment. It's always so difficult to discuss about guitars. AGREE, I should be the last to discuss about this, having a pretty nice collection, 50% luck, 25% coincidence and 25% a must-have-it.
Just like you told, I knew what an acoustic guitar was and an electric. I surfed, compared days and days, and still too difficult.
- What about other "holy grails"? A Gretsch WHITE PENGUIN (origin 50-ties), sold on eBay, 56 bids for about 175.000$ IS THIS REAL, it looks surrealistic, but so is a STRADIVARIUS too. a 1958-1960 Gibson LP Standard, estimated price > 150.000$, while a custom, the top of the line goes 50.000-75.000$ Acoustics in high price class: same woods, resulting in a difficult to hear the difference situation. The sky isn't the limit. I ask myself many times the question, why keeping my US 1964 Fender? A piece of wood with strings. AND,yet I can't kep distance from them.

Tennessee Strat, I posted a topic about woods, in fact the most used wood to build a guitar.
- What is the most important factor in the "expensive sector"? Most of these guitars, I mean different brands, they all use finally the same wood: Rosewood, Spruce, Mahogany and some of them have an equal sound. Is it the "bracing"?
- Is there an impact on the TONE/SOUND using different wood for the neck or fretboard?
- Do you use "electronic devices" to analyse the sound spectrum?
My dream was making an own guitar, since I had to stop, but I'm afraid that it would be physical impossible to make a guitar, which brings me to the question that if I would love to have a "handmade" guitar, that you can build one? Using rosewood (which: East Indian, Honduras) and different spruce kinds, like Sitka or German spruce?
Thanks a lot

The title of the topic tells us enough.
This is about "ranking the guitars". I made my personal top 5 of acoustics. I have Gibson and Martin. WHY AM or was I,  and I am not the only one, SO OBSESSED IN A DREADNOUGHT shape?
1) Gibson SJ-200 Montana Gold: greatest sounding guitar of all
2) Martin (HD-28, D-45V) having real great guitars
3) COLLINGS
4) SANTA CRUZ
5) TAYLOR.
I focussed maybe too much on dreadnoughts, and neglecting other sizes like 000, or Jumbo.
The sound of a Dreadnought is sometimes too limited about producing a "harder sound" maybe the only guitars from my list are Martin D-45V and Gibson SJ-200.
It's also amazing to see that all these top brands, in fact 75% are made with the same wood.
So there must be MORE to produce different sounds. My opinion is the "inner structure"but I really don't know why.
Who has experience with these guitars, like Santa Cruz, Collings and Taylor. What I don't like are the CUTAWAYS, what is the purpose? to play 1 or 2 extra frets?
It sounds silly but some songs are sounding better with a dreadnought, others with a "jumbo-like"

I found some information, googling: Ovation 1121-4 model
A link to an Ovation website: http://www.ovationgallery.com/collector … adeer.htm.

483               1121 -4        Natural
F-172           1121
I 'll try to get more information.

Like OLDNEWBIE  sais, we are indeed "old" men. I was born in 1955.
And GEOAGUIAR, I do agree with you. At first, I had another name for this topic.
It is a fact IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY, and I really feel sorry because I start from my guitars.
A very good guitar player will play great on an 100$ guitar, just go back in time, let's say the Twenties. Blues = Afro-American origin, with roots in AFRICA. An afro-american was able to play great stuff on a "throw-away" guitar, in a matter of speaking. Of course you are not a better player having a 3000$ guitar. But every single person playing guitar, want a not too expensive decent guitars. There are a lot of topics about this. My point is: playing alone, and you will develop skills, style. BUT that same player in a band will play a lot better. Second point: if you buy an expensive guitar, with your own money, you just try to work harder, more to buy your "dream guitar" you will be MORE motivated because YOU SAVED A LOT OF MONEY to buy that guitar. I know a lot of people having an Epiphone, and if they play with friends having a Gibson, it is VERY DIFFICULT TO RESIST a guitar like Gibson. The problem is the money, and for that my apologies, I worked 75 hours as a Doc, I had a good "business"and I loved guitars.
Go to a music store, around Christmas, New Year and the store is over crowded by fathers, mothers and their son to buy him a guitar, or a "starterskit". (my personal favourite is an Epiphone SG Special, the cheapest, but it really sounds great). My point was, if you really work hard or more, like an extra job, this is also different here than in the USA, to buy your dream guitar, skipping other models, it means (to me) that when you finally hold your guitar in your arms, and you play, that you will play better BECAUSE YOU SAVED FOR THIS GUITAR, you will play more, because you have your "dream guitar" and you are more motivated.
Seeing young people playing a squier, you can see in their eyes how bad they want a real fender. That's my theory, and this can lead to nice discussions.

CYTANIA and SOUTHPAW and of course my other friends too, thanks.
I played a few times in an "always-in-rehearsal-state" band. The difference was GIGANTIC. After the second song, I even started to play on a few strings, not a real solo but just following the melody, bending, and followed by strumming. I think I told already that when I play guitar, I adore a strum+blocking strings with my wrist. And for ETC_04: I really hope to come to the USA, I've never been in Ohio, and JAM together.
A question: I noticed that a lot of Musicians are from OHIO, more than other States. Is this wrong or correct?

When you buy a 12-string guitar, the sound is very different compared to a 6-string.
I tried a few, having already a Martin D-1 12.
In a guitar shop, I tried some others like Guild, Washburn in a lower price category.
My conclusion was:
- The sound is so overwhelming, so nice and loud, that, if I didn't had that Martin (I got it for free) I would prefer a GUILD, like Guild GAD-F212E 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar $899,95 or an
- Alvarez RD20S12 Regent Series Dreadnought 12-String NOT ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC and $399

It might be difficult to choose, but I really don't hear much difference between a $500 12-string and a $2000 12-string, because the sound is 100% different than a 6-string acoustic. The sound, volume is overwhelming and this  is "subjective" I don't HEAR a lot of difference.
IT IS A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE A 6-STRING THAN A 12-STRING.
What I also don't like are the CUTAWAYS guitars, like TAYLOR, TAKAMINE, they sound different, more metallic. I don't have a cutaway model, besides to possibility to play higher on your fret board there is that 1 thing I don't like: same brand having a dreadnought or a cutaway, I prefer the dreadnought.
I really loved to see comments, and it's even better having the same brand, one with, and one without CUTAWAY.

Kanagawakid, I will post some 12-string guitars, and give you some online music stores.
www.zzounds.com
www.musiciansfriend.com
These are sites where you find a lot of information: a photo, technical information like woods, prices and very important: read some comments.
Another interesting site is youtube. If you want to see a guitar in action, search for 12 string acoustic guitars, or better a brand, it gives you a better idea.
Here some 12-string + price.
On ZZOUNDS:
- Epiphone DR212 12-String Acoustic Guitar: $149,95 --> ratings 8/10
- Fender CD100 12-String Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar  $219,95 BUT ratings 6/10
- Washburn D10S12 12-String Dreadnought: $299,95 only 1 rating 6/10
On MUSICIANSFRIEND:
- MORE CHOICE and price range starting with a Fender CD160E 12-String  349,99$
- Breedlove Atlas AC250/SM 12-String 779$
- Luna Muse 12-String  $379 (never heard about this brand) Years ago, her in my country, most 12-string guitar's were OVATION. What I don't like about Ovation, unplugged is a "weaker" sound. Ovation CC-045-HB Celebrity Standard: $499
- Takamine EG523SC12 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar: $749
These guitars I mentioned are the most affordable. If you go to musician's friend, you will find other decent low-cost brands.
The price is getting higher and higher.

Tennessee, from which country are you?
I can't help it talking and comparing US versus Europe.
Somewhere I wrote that after having surgery: putting my foot in 90°, to block it, I had so much hope to forfill my "child dream" BEING A DOC ON A CRUISE BOAT. Reason for surgery.
I have, maybe had a very strong character. This intervention had a purpose = being a lot better. Operation 100% success, but the combination foot/back "killed every single dream".
Well this really KILLED me, you are THAT close to realise a CHILD dream and so they contacted my treating Docs. Since that moment I started to understand the picture, a hard confrontation with reality, which I CAN'T ACCEPT NEVER and NEVER, I lost it all, except being overinsured, which hurts me too, BECAUSE I CAN'T ACCEPT MY CONDITION.
About the USA: can I move and live there WITHOUT a job, but getting enough money? What is needed, besides a green card? A reason for these questions?
MY USA OBSESSION

Remarkable to notice that  people, start playing guitar often buy a more expensive guitar.
They believe, having a Gibson, Fender, PRS will have a very positive impact = being a lot better player than the one buying a lot cheaper guitar.
I started to surf, reading topics and answers resulting in a YES.
WHY?
If your first guitar, is an expensive guitar like Martin, Gibson, Taylor, you will be more motivated to play.
Starting playing guitar is great, a lot of people start with a "cheap and decent" model.
I had the opportunity to read a lot of comments on websites as musician's friend, zzounds and I also noticed that a lot of these people regret there choice. On the other hand, ther are also a lot who don't regret.
Most people will finally buy a lot more expensive model, blinded by artists playing great brands, having friends playing a great brand. These impressions lead me to:
CONCLUSION: HAVING A MORE EXPENSIVE GUITAR PRODUCING A GREAT TONE, IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN PRESUMED.
I don't know if you agree, this isn't about guitars only, but the INTERACTION guitar vs player.

Hi strat, I told you that since my "stop working verdict" I have to fill my days, they all look the same
So I have a lot of surf time, and about DUESENBERG, I believe you can hear that guitar in action. As far as I can make a conclusion: DUESENBERG is a VERY UNDERESTIMATED brand, plays incredible, better sounds, I never played one.
You know, it is so difficult to resist a guitar, even having 23 guitars. Sounds crazy, it started crazy but seeing the retail prices now, they are = a house. For instance, my Fender Stratocaster 1964, I really don't know why I still have it. I can sell this and buy a reissue, a relic, a Clapton fender, I will still have money. THE PRICES ARE INSANE, surrealistic, who is behind all that, who is responsible?

That's the point. They present it as if it is SO SIMPLE, even my BOSS 600, I found a translation,
250 pages long. I HATE MANUALS, and, this is my nature, everything I'm hating or not interested, causes a lot of trouble and problems.
I even don't like to read books, and if I read: 200  pages = 2 hours, perfectly knowing and even reproducing that book. I am a "diagonal reader" who is very impatient. Of course I miss the "essence" of a lot of things, like having a floorboard, I use maybe 20% of the capacity. I am NOT in the mood since some weeks to play guitar. Since New Year, I don't play electric. Acoustic, slowly learning some finger picking, and playing maybe 15 minutes a day. The strange thing is, that I play a lot better comparing it with the play-time. Has somebody an explanation about this mysterious fact?

1,274

(8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)

I received a few guitars from the States. In 2004 they still allowed you, probably depending on who, to bring them on board, telling them at the desk that they where worth a fortune, and every guitar "landed" in the cockpit, even played by  pilot during the flight.
You have to loosen, like Russel told the strings. IF YOU DON'T DO IT = BROKEN NECK, MORE SPECIFIC THE HEADSTOCK.
About not locking, I don't know, because they scan it anyway if you use it as luggage. IMPORTANT: ask and tell your problem, as written above, take a picture if possible, but a lot depends how you explain your problem at the check-in.
