Hey Jody - Good/Sad song...I heard it in my head in a kind of Willie & Waylon style...I think the Whisky ref led me there.

I worked out some music that seems to fit the mood of the song. Thanks for the push to make this into music from all our Chordie Poets. Background for this is my father’s tales about all sorts of stuff including the ghost of the mountain mist. As was mentioned on the Poem forum this should be played a little bluegrassy if you can. I heard a banjo in my head, although I can't play one (wish I could) as I was writing this so if you banjo it let me know how it goes.

Ghost of the Mountain Mist By Jeff Gilpin

Intro

Strumming Dm for 4 beat

[Dm]Riding with my father

[F]Back when I was young

[C]Heading back up Old Fort Mountain

[G]The day was almost done

[Dm]Crawling down the mountain

A [F]solid bank of whiteness

[C]Dad said not just any fog bank

It’s the [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [Dm]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

See [Dm]way back long ago

[F]My dad explained

There [C]was a moonshining mountain man

Worked a [G]still up this way

[Dm]Had a reputation

Best corn [F]liquor to be had

[C]Made himself a fortune

[G]Until it all went bad

[Dm]The sheriff of the county

[F]Aimed to shut him down

[C]Went hunting for the still

In the [G]mountains just out of town

The [Dm]mountain man got wind

From [F]those who bought his liquor

[C]Didn’t want to loose

His [G]fortune making elixir

[Dm]So he built some other fires

To [F]try and hide his smoke

[C]Fanned it all around those hills

That’s [G]when the mist awoke

[Dm]Mist and smoke it hid him

[F]That moon shinning man

But [C]also hid a drop off

[G]On the way back to his camp

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

bridge

[C]He didn’t [G]see it [Dm]coming

[C]Fell [G]long and far be[Dm]low

[C]Sheriff [G]heard that [Dm]eerie scream

[C]Long sorrowful and [A7]slow

[Dm]The sheriff found the still

[F]Chopped it up to bits

[C]Went back down the mountain

[G]Hoping to forget

That [Dm]scream he heard while searching

For the [F]still that misty night

From [C]then on he swore he always heard it

[G]On those misty nights

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

[Dm]So dad had surely spooked me

With the [F]story that had told

Then he [C]rolled down his window

Even [G]though the night was cold

Said, [Dm]Son if you just listen close

[F]On this misty night

You [C]might just hear that scream too

And [G]give yourself a fright

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [Dm]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [G]mist [Dm]

I came across this song in my unfinished pile and I kind of liked it so I decided to finish it tonight. I can't really remember why I started it but I’m an avid reader and will be to the day I die so I imagine I read a good book that inspired me. I hope you all enjoy.

Here’s to the Story By Jeff Gilpin

June 27th, 2010

[Em] [G] [A] [Em]

It could happen [G]anywhere [A]

It could happen any time [Em]

It doesn’t have to [G]last too long [A]

It doesn’t have to rhyme [Em]

It has a [G]beginning [A]

A middle and an end [Em]

And just might [G]teach a lesson [A]

From somewhere within [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That was handed down [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

Passed from town to town [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That just came to an end [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

About to begin [Em]

They come in [G]many sizes [A]

Packaged differently [Em]

They come in [G]any style [A]

More than the eye can see [Em]

Some leave you [G]happy [A]

Some will make you think [Em]

Some leave you [G]sad and blue [A]

Some drive you to drink [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That was handed down [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

Passed from town to town [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That just came to an end [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

About to begin [Em]

Once u[G]pon a time [A]

On a dark and gloomy night [Em]

The first [G]story was told [A]

They must have got it right [Em]

Because we’ve been [G]telling stories [A]

Since the dawn of time [Em]

And we’ll keep [G]listening [A]

To all that we can find [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That was handed down [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

Passed from town to town [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That just came to an end [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

About to begin [Em]

I’ve read a [G]lot of books [A]

Everything under the sun [Em]

I’ll keep on [G]reading [A]

Until my day’s are done [Em]

For those sur[G]prises [A]

Out there for me to find [Em]

And keep me [G]learning[A]

Until the end of time [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That was handed down [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

Passed from town to town [D]

Here’s to the [G]story [A]

That just came to an end [D]

And to the [G]story [A]

About to begin [Em]

Still haven't found music for this but it takes me back to when my dad told me the story.

Ghost of the Mountain Mist
By Jeff Gilpin

Riding with my father
Back when I was young
Heading back Old Fort Mountain
The day was almost done

Crawling down the mountain
A solid bank of whiteness
Dad said not just any fog bank
It’s the ghost of the mountain mist

Comes out in the evening
The ghost of the mountain mist
Seeing is believing
The ghost of the mountain mist

See way back long ago
My dad explained
There was a moonshining mountain man
Worked a still up this way

Had a reputation
Best corn liquor to be had
Made himself a fortune
Until it all went bad

The sheriff of the county
Aimed to shut him down
Went hunting for the still
In the mountains just out of town

The mountain man got wind
From those who bought his liquor
Didn’t want to loose
His fortune making elixir

So he built other fires

Was when the mist awoke

The ghost of the mountain mist
Seeing is believing
The ghost of the mountain mist

Mist and smoke it hid him
That moon shinning man
But also hid a drop off
On the way back to his camp

He didn’t see it coming
Fell long and far below
Sheriff heard the scream
Come sorrowful and slow

The sheriff found the still
Chopped it up to bits
Went back down the mountain
Hoping to forget

That scream he heard while searching
For that still that misty night
He swore he always heard it
When err that mist came into sight

Comes out in the evening
The ghost of the mountain mist
Seeing is believing
The ghost of the mountain mist

So dad had surely spooked me
With the story that had told
He then rolled down his window
Even though the night was cold

Said, Son if you just listen close
On this misty night
You might hear that scream too
And give yourself a fright

Comes out in the evening
The ghost of the mountain mist
Seeing is believing
The ghost of the mountain mist

Hey Kenny - I think I got the feel for it but will have to hear to be sure. Great song though and a picture clear statement about the world we live in.

I was watching Bluehighway today and got a little tast of Sharon's music. I never heard of her before but I have always loved one of her songs she wrote, My Hero's Have Always Been Cowboys. So being the curous type of guy I am, I went looking for more about Sharon Vaughn and I found out she is making more pop'ish sounding music in Sweden and not doing too bad there either. Kind of makes you wonder what her life has been like to end up to where she is today. Anyway some of her new music is on her myspace page if anyone wants to have a listen...be fair warned though. Her new music is totally very different from Heros.

As the song says I couldn't sleep last night but it made for a good song to write I think. Hope you like it. The Intro and outro played like "lullaby and good night..." at least that's how I do it.

So, Can’t Sleep Tonight By Jeff Gilpin

May 15th, 2010

Intro

[A] [D] [A] [E] [A]

Verse 1

[A]So, can’t sleep tonight

I’d rather be tucked in [A7]tight

But I’m not [D]sleeping

[D7] Got up out of [A]bed

Some things you [E]said

Woke up my [A]head

Verse 2

So, I grab a book

Trying to [A7]look

For something to [D]tire me

[D7] I can’t focus [A]there

I just [E]stare

The word don’t [A]care

Chorus 1

[D]Whirlwind in my mind

Not the kind of thoughts that [A]help you

Fall into that nightly [E]slumber

That I want [A]too

Verse 3

Nothing on TV

Turned down [A7]low

I can barely [D]hear it

[D7] What they’re trying to [A]tell

Or mostly [E]sell

To sleepy people like [A]me

Verse 4

Wish that I could

Find what [A7]would

Rest my [D]thinking

[D7] Or at least ease my [A]mind

I try to [E]think

The peaceful [A]kind

Chorus 2

[D]Whirlwind settling down

I think I found my [A]answer

Peaceful thoughts to [E]drive

My mind to peaceful [A]sleep

Verse 5

Fatigue has finally come

To all I’ve [A7]done

I set the day be[D]hind me

[D7] I go back to [A]bed

Lay down my [E]head

And finally fall to [A]sleep

Verse 6

Ah, I get to dream

But my thoughts [A7]seem

To imitate my [D]waking

[D7] I dream that I can’t [A]sleep

Thinking [E]thoughts I

Thought I left [A]behind

Chorus 3

[D]Dreams, I toss and turn

Make me yearn or my [A]waking

And when that [E]comes

I find my night is [A]done

Outro

Ain't Patty Loveless great. I play several of her songs,

Lovin' all night
Timber I'm falling in love
Chains
She drew a broken heart

Gonna have to try "Here I am" (have you tried capoing 1st fret and playing in "E"?)

nela

Haven't tried in E but I'll give it a go...thanks

So this is one of my favorite's by Patty and I figured it out.

At least how she does it. Capo 1 in D and it goes:
intro - DAGDBm (don't need this but it sounds nice)
Verses - DGDAGDBmGD
Chorus - GDGDAGD
Bridge - DGBmGx2

That's it

I like it in G which is like this:
intro - GDCGEm
Verses - GCGDCGEmCG
Chorus - CGCGDCG
Bridge - GCEmCx2

Lryics are out there some where so give it a try.

Hey Robert, Lena and Kenny - Thanks. In the northern Virginia/DC area the best seasons are spring and fall. Summer is too hot and too muggy and winter is ...well this past one set records for snow fall in the area... and I really liked snow before this past winter. But spring is here now and it is just flat out perfect weather... while I spend most of it working.  smile

We had a pretty rough winter in the DC area and right now I'm loving the perfect spring Easter.

The Coming of Spring By Jeff Gilpin

[A]Budding open [E]eyes

Back to life as [D]days get warm

A [A]beautiful sur[E]prise

Springtime a[D]wakening

Was only laying [D]dormant

[A]Biding time in[E]stead

The [A]coming of [E]spring

[D]Life lives on [E]eternal

[A]Earth’s awake[E]ning

[E]Grass is growing [D]greener

[A]From the winter [E]brown

Trees blooming [D]flowers

[A]Flowers from the [E]ground

Bulbs sprouting [D]color

What [A]had been plain be[E]fore

[A]Home from where they’ve [E]been

Hey Toots - What really got me to write this was looking at a picture of me last weekend that after working my butt off and not sleeping enough...I looked older than I ever have but what I was thinking was "I don't feel that old", but I did feel that tired. I have my 50th coming up this year and I remember growing up thinking 50 was almost in the grave. I'm thinking different now a days and I still remember my teenage years and not so long ago.

Thank you Lena and thank you deadstring.  Angels Share... sounds like it could be the name of a really good song.  Happy birthday deadstring - I hope give it a try. When I wrote it I felt that just reading the song you could come up with many different ways to play and sing it. I think that's great...I sing it kind of like I remember folks singing around where I grew up in western NC.

Like many people, sometimes remember my youth and all that happened to me growing up. Sometime it makes me sad; sometimes, like tonight, it makes me happy. So I wrote this song about it, and yes I don't feel old, not one bit.
