James, this is indeed correct. It's REALLY difficult to imagine TODAY a world without all the different ways used as communication. It is also amazing to see the evolution. I think in terms of "what really changed from the year 1500 until 1800? Clothes, fashion? In 1800 a lot of things started to change: factories, bike, and the start of the car industrie, photography. Again a status quo with a slow progression and evolution. Look to the period 1990 until today. In those 18 years more things changed than in two centuries. About communication: in the later Middle Ages, the people living in a village or town, didn't have the way to communicate. NEWS was told by travelling people, explaining and singing, with animation on paper, pointing with a stick on every image accompanied with a guy playing lute, flute, fiddle. They also were present on "public executions" the event of the year, surrounded by hundreds of poor people who were able to shout and spit on the victim. Just like in the old ROME "bread and games", not so funny games. Coming back on the travelling minstrels going from town to town to "sing" messages.
THIS IS MY BIGGEST INTEREST = HISTORY. Evolution of languages like the changed English language in the USA. See also South Africa, Australia.
ABOUT MUSIC I DON'T LIKE, I adore opera, but not Operetta and certainly not MUSICALS.
- JAZZ: yes and no. I despise FREE JAZZ, but I love more "dixie" jazz.

Amigo SouthPaw, I always wanted to ask you: where is your nickname stands for?
I LOVE your description about being "bombarded" by SPORN (= spam+porn).
I discovered a great site: www.facebook.com having a huge success, because it is US born, we receive the info later, or not, or in specialised magazines.
They have a large site for guitars.
Should it be possible to add a site for chordians, where they show your face and guitars?

EBIGHAM's question if there is somebody who has experience with this guitar.
My topic is based on his question, but different.
Go to WWW.YOUTUBE.COM and write "gibson robotic guitar." You can do the same for the Fender VG stratocaster.
What IS YOUR IDEA about these guitars? A lot of players will swear on their normal with no bull*** to create their sound and using their guitar.
1) WOULD YOU BY A GIBSON ROBOTIC GUITAR?
2) WOULD YOU BUY A FENDER VG STRATOCASTER.

I spend hours to look, to listen, to compare, and if I could: I WON'T HESITATE TO BUY A GIBSON ROBOTIC. Blinded or hating the AUTOMATIC TUNING, you can still do it MANUAL. But, Jesus, it is, a not to understand GIBSON.
If you heard and saw this Gibson on YOUTUBE, I use youtube a lot to see what's on the GUITAR MARKET, isn't it a MIRACLE GUITAR? You can play a song, with the fat gibson sound identical to your Gibson Standard, and the second song, just push some buttons left and right to create an open tuning. I agree, you need some time to learn how to use this Gibson.
WOULD I BUY THAT GIBSON?
- YES, why I love "gadgets" but this isn't the reason. You create a lot of combinations. Maybe the only reference is a VARIAX LINE 6.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO: PROS AND CONS?
.

HELLO BOOT good morning here, and good night there.
I do exactly the same, but not so detailed as you. What I wrote looks funny, playing guitar sitting on an amp. You FEEL the vibrations, sound and in the mean time you check that guitar.
I can't help it, but PRS is my favourite.

BOOT, DO YOU KNOW IF I CAN FIND ORIGINAL GIBSON LES PAUL CUSTOM 1968 somewhere? I changed these by 2 P-94, to create the sound of the first production years, having another 1979 Custom. They gave me back my originals, and since my girlfriend left me, I'm afraid that she threw away these humbuckers. THAT CUSTOM'S PRICE IS 10.000 to 15.000$,original. I wish I never had that girl, I was lost in 1998, everything prepared to move to South Africa, to end up in CANADA, unfortunately she crossed my path.

I think it must work, a topic about that guitar, because it does not really belong here.My guess: he read about the ovation in your topic.
I'll look it up, it keeps me busy.

How does a band choose their name?
- AC/DC = "alternating current / direct current". The band used it not realizing it was also slang for a bisexual
- BAD COMPANY - A 1972 modern cowboy movie starring Jeff Bridges.
- BADFINGER, I believe was "the middle finger up"

This hand closed, with the middlefinger up isn't it a WORLD WIDE SYMBOL? And when or where is this "stupid" finger coming from?

I live 10 miles away from the CAPITOL of EUROPE: BRUSSELS (B.RUSSELL) big_smile  big_smile
BELGIUM, a weird country. Or national sport is avoiding and fooling taxes. (wasn't this punished by death penalty in the USA, in 1900?)
- BRUSSELS Sprouts
- BRUSSELS Waffles
- BELGIUM CHOCOLATES
- FRENCH FRIES = WRONG, WRONG and WRONG. THE "BELGIUM FRIES" are from Belgium.
There are a few guys from Belgium who started a BELGIUM CAFE, BELGIUM BEERS = world famous.
- MANNEKE PIS (A little statue in Brussels Centrum: the big market square is UNIQUE, all houses 600 years old. This "manneke" = little man, and PIS = urine) is one of the higlights, and probably one of the most photographed statues. He stands ther, holding his little bronze p**s, and peeing water.

Tennessee, I agree. Before judging this guitar, go to www.youtube.com, a great site to compare guitars. "Gibson robotic guitar", + enter, you'll see the guitar, and look to that guy who explains how this Gibson works. An amazing fact: your DETUNED guitar is automatically tuned, more she has also open tunings, "AUTOMATICALLY" no need to take 5 guitars with you pre-tuned in open tunings, as the guitar tunes in open E A dropped D.... To enjoy this guitar, you really need to "learn"how it works.
See FENDER VG too.
See for yourself. I will look for more information.

Dear Ranger, I'm really glad to receive an answer. Imagine, even I am jealous counting my guitars, and having some guitars (US Fender strat 1964, and a Gibson LP custom 1968=first year they started the production).
In which country do you live? I am from Belgium. How old are you? and what kind of music do you play? My English now, compared to a year ago has improved a lot.
What I told, was the story how the collection started. As told: I am blessed to have these guitars. I know 1 thing: the value of these guitars is 3x more expensive since I bought them but they aren't for sale big_smile this isn't also our question. I wrote that it all started with a MARTIN HD-28, and I thought you purchased a HD-28 too?
This MARTIN  GIBSON  TAYLOR  guitars are really great, and if you should ask 100 people, playing guitar, and they have the opportunity, most of them would buy one.
SO MY PERSONAL OPINION = these brands, in particular MARTIN & GIBSON, are burned in our collective memory. You go too a concert, or you read about it: the most famous guitar players do play on these brands. Even more in "electric guitars" GIBSON versus FENDER"
They were also associated with a "guitar god" see Clapton, Hendrix. WORSE these guys get guitars for free '(ENDORSEMENT), see PRS versus SANTANA.
YOUR QUESTION IS SO GOOD, but I am afraid that the "WHY" isn't easy, but since decades MARTIN was the number one. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO SAY "MARTIN or GIBSON" sucks. Almost every professional player has one of those, and the why? PROBABLY SO PROMOTED AND WELL-KNOWNED that we associate these brands with guitar players, and that this "HOLY TRINITY" turns into A MUST HAVE. You bought a Martin HD-28 too, so I can ask you the same question. I promess, since I have time, to look on the net to see if there is another reason.
Why are we obsessed to drive a MERCEDES PORSCHE BMW? Other cars are even better. I do hope we keep in touch, and/or you can mail me (see email address). I try everything to find other reasons for the WHY, besides my opinion.

Yes Professor. As I wrote it started with a "gospel style". When they worked you had one person calling followed by response.
A nice equivalent is "THE ARMY". They sing a lot that Manfred Mann's song Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" (movies!!!!???) and the sergeant sings a military version of the phrase: There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singing. Answered by the soldiers: DO WAH...
This is one of the best reference to compare CALL and RESPONSE.
DIDDY DIDDY DUM  "DADDY BONE" I couldn't help it sorry, it's too funny to keep it for myself

Somewhere in 1993, I went with a friend to a store here in Belgium. There are some major differences in price from one store to another, for THE SAME GUITAR.
My personal test was:
- sitting on an amp.
- playing 5-10 brands, from Squier, Epiphone to the major league guitars, like Gibson, US Fender
and an at that time unknown brand PRS.
- you "prepare the amp: volume, tone and as an extra distortion. No changes later, playing the guitars one by one, my friend did the same and after testing we discussed about the best guitar, making our own top 3
- sitting on the amp= you feel the sound through your body (probably entering your a** and coming out on your mouth). Playing like this: we had the same top 3
1) PRS Custom 24
2) Gibson LP custom
3) Fender US strat ( they had at that time maybe 5 different US Fenders.)
The decision was made: PRS, but I bought this one 2 years later.
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR GUITAR, having a budget, TO COMPARE?

Indeed cytania.
I spend hours, only to see the Fender's you can buy. (squier included)
When I ENTER A MUSIC STORE it's unbelievable how many Fenders you see. A Fender Clapton, Beck..., all different "reissues" there are maybe 30 different US Fenders. Same with Mexican Fenders. If you should test the Fenders, for an audience, I was told, and also found that the Mexican Fender is more a co-working US/Mexico. You should read all comments on sites as www.zzounds.com, www.music123.com, www.musiciansfriend.com or www.samash.com.
A nice site to compare is youtube. About Japanese Fenders: meant for the Japanese market can you find them in the US? US versus Mexico: even the coils of some guitars are like the US coils. You also have quit a few players, buying a Mexican model and for 149,99$ they put US coils in their Fender

Yes, I am disappointed.
I play pretty good guitar, but here some problems
- I live alone and play alone.
- Keeping my rhythm is sometimes great, but also bad (50/50)
- My Korg Pandora Toneworks, a small device with a lot of options AMPS, OTHER GUITARISTS, a RHYTHMSECTION helped me a lot to keep my rhythm, or if my friend is playing.
- I TRIED MY BOSS BR 600, having 2 very strong mics on the outside (also a special input is present) but I just pushed on "mic" and played a lovely acoustic tune.
- LISTENING TO THE RESULT: it sounds not bad, but AGAIN "THE" PROBLEM: RHYTHM.
Can somebody give me advice? When I play in another room, my "rhythm "sounds OK but recording it's only OK for 50%. I don't know what to do.
Probably I can compress and arrange the song but what is your advice.
Thanks

Usually the question is what music do you love.

I DON'T LIKE
- OPERETTAS and MUSICALS (playing theatre in combination with singing. It looks ridiculous seeing "I'm singing in the rain" takataktat tap dancing. It disturbs the movie a lot.
- MUSIC from countries like INDIA (I've been there 18 years ago), very monotone and soon
boring, they sound all the same.
- MUSIC from CHINA, JAPAN
- ARAB MUSIC
This music is monotone, maybe it is me who don't like to study more that kind of music.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC "YOU" DON'T LIKE?
CORRECTION: There are movies where a few songs are present and are real good.
The greatest movie I saw was PAT GARETT & BILLY THE KID, with Bob Dylan playing a song.
He wrote the music and one of my all time favourites is the album with music.
He plays a song, and using the same  chords Bob had a few variations about the main theme.

That's what it's all about mixter.
Boot: I know we discussed this already. My question is in fact not as I wanted. Of course, seeing all immigrants (did you know that one of the biggest were Germans) bringing us Irish, Scottish, Italian, German, English styles. Put all these styles in a blender and the outcome has to be fantastic. BUT MY PRIMARY QUESTION IS: THE NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC.
the blues DID start in the US. When harvesting cotton, the Afro-Americans, 150 years ago, were singing songs, but I think the blues started already in Africa.
Due to the discrimination in the 50ties and 60ties, it was "not done" to listen to the "devil's music" and British sailors loved that music, bringing it to Europe resulting in great blues performers, sending back the blues to the USA. This is what I found:
The most important direct antecedent of the blues was the spiritual, a form of religious song.
Aside from the spirituals, African American work songs were an important precursor to the modern blues; these included the songs sung by labourers.
The earliest blues-like music was a "functional expression, rendered in a call-and-response style
Many of these blues elements, such as the call-and-response format, can be traced back to the music of Africa.

geoaguiar, I play it also on fret 4, as you said. But I'm a quick chord changer, from a regular D, not in barre, up to B(in barre).
I adore quick changes.

Zax, welcome. I found your silvertone, a pretty nice guitar, and you love probably hardrock and metal.
I play for 30 years, and reading tabs is not my biggest skill. A great site is www.youtube.com I looked there and yes, they show you how to play the song. There are different approaches. I am ashamed because I have it difficult with tabs. I am quit impatient, that's the cause.
A few years ago, there was not much information, so I have a lot of books. Every single day I promess to read tabs and worse to add a song.
You have choices, private lessons, on line lessons. What's the best? If it was me, I should try first on line, and very important is: play along with a CD.

RANGER, All I tied to write is meant as information. Didn't I add other guitars as Epiphone, Takamine?
WHY SO MANY GUITARS, I COULD SAY THAT IT'S MY BUSINESS, BUT I AM NOT A PERSON WHO REACTS SO. I PREFER TO BE HONEST.  ABOUT MY ACOUSTICS:
It started with a junk coming since years to my consult. He needed money. THIS IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW. If I write that I helped a lot of people by charging them what they got back from our social security, like 20$ in stead of 30$. Adding all the 10$ I didn't ask, I could buy a house. Why? THIS IS ME. There are people who needed the money a lot more than I did. Some more? I GAVE ( not asking back that money) A LOT. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE A HOUSE CALL, AND YOU ENTER AN ICECOLD HOME, LIGHT COMING FROM CANDLES, electricity cut of, AND THEY HAD 5 KIDS, AND NO MONEY TO BUY FOOD? I GAVE 500$. To come again on that Junkie: he gave me his guitar, a MARTIN-HD28 like you bought, and you won't regret it. I invested by giving 8000$ to friends who wanted to take over a music store. Getting back the money = difficult, so we agreed that they paid me back with guitars. Before you know, you have 10 guitars.
WHY MARTINS AND GIBSONS? EVERY MUSIC STORE HAD, HERE IN BELGIUM, 75%OF THEIR STOCK were these guitars. TAYLOR, TAKAMINE unknown.
I ADORE THE SOUND, AND BECAUSE OF THE BRANDS ALL MY GUITARS ARE 2 to 3 TIMES MORE IN VALUE.
WEALTHY:  YES even this question deserves an answer. I took some big financial risks by buying a laser, a device to treat cellulitis with success. I worked 80 hours a week to be called "wealthy". How many hours do most people work?
I AM DISABLED DUE TO A CAR ACCIDENT I STARTED AGAIN BUT I HAD TO STOP, BECAUSE OF TOO SEVERE PHYSICAL PROBLEMS. AND A SECOND YES ABOUT BEING WEALTHY: I WAS AND STILL AM OVERINSURED RESULTING IN HAVING MORE THAN ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY 2 GUITARS IN NASHVILLE IN GRUHN'S STORE.
IT'S BY TAKING RISKS IN MY JOB, THAT I WAS "WEALTHY"AND BY BEING OVERINSURED. HERE THE MUSIC STORES changed a lot, having 60% more different brands, compared to 8 years. I DO WITH MY MONEY WHAT I WANT, and a lot of people told me that I could play on 1 guitar.
ALL MY ACOUSTICS ARE TWICE AS MUCH WORTH NOW.
So: I worked for free (if you go to a doctor here, they give you a receipt, send it to your company, and they pay you back as told. 30$ was the price, I asked 20$, and they got 25$ back. I AM TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE AND NOT ABOUT A BREAD. BEFORE YOU REALISE YOU HAVE MORE AND MORE GUITARS. Why do people collect stamps? is this so different or difficult to understand that I collect and play. You can take a guess: HOW MANY ELECTRIC GUITARS I OWN.
My only intention was to answer and offer my help, seeing that the guitars you mentioned were MARTINS and GIBSONS TOO. To give advise.
PLEASE DON'T JUDGE ME BECAUSE I AM BLESSED TO BUILD A NICE COLLECTION, see it as investment, to end: the value has tripled and I AM UNABLE TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE, SO PLEASE RESPECT MY HOBBY, MY PASSION itis one of the few things that I can do: playing guitar.

It' more and more difficult to buy a Fender.
- Spending 4000$ for a "relic" like a Rory Gallagher model?
- How many different kinds of Fender are there now, Mexican & Korean not included)
- The good old fender has 3 single coils, but am I right when I tell that the combination s-s-h, or the FAT STRAT is sold more and more?

(31 replies, posted in Acoustic)

That's the reason why I always start talking about E, A, D, C even G is more difficult.
For an absolute beginner: it's a torture to play F B, unless you play them in barré. The B chord can be played on the fourth fret, like the A chord but 2 frets higher. This is looks easy, but you have to stay away from the first 2 strings and the 6th string.
Best way: in barré on fret 7.

Your right cytania, I forgot to mention the almost "acoustic" sized guitars, used in jazz.
I based myself on what I saw, playing jazz/blues using a semi-hollow body. About Jazz, I love it, but I hate those freaky jam sessions.

About guitar players you can recognise instant, because of their exceptional way to approach their guitar:
- PETE TOWNSEND (THE WHO) playing the guitar with his arm similar to a windmill.
- JIMI HENDRIX: played guitar as it was a piece of himself, using his teeth, and much more

This are maybe the 2 most remarkable players, but are there other players?

I know, but on the other side, people in the US talk more about their incomes then here. When they knew that I was a doctor 90% just asked how much I earned to compare this with a medical doctor in the USA. Also the fact seeing movies, and the fact that you find a lot of other people's income, like a police officer, a soldier.
My question was not directly personal. It was more to have an idea what a band or performer receives by playing in a bar, or busking.
This was the reason why I asked this question
Was it wrong to ask what you find in your "hat", being a pretty good performer, and playing on a good spot, or to have an idea when you start to play for a bigger audience.
I was "blinded" and "fooled" by the idea that people living in the USA didn' bother to talk about it
So I'm really embarrassed SORRY again, I will probably delete it.

AMAZING!! THANKS FOR THE LINK.
I surf a lot, mainly on sites about guitars, or bands, but that one is unknown to me.
Concerning sound: I have a MARTIN Backpacker, the body has a triangular shape, difficult to play when you sit, and a thick guitar neck PRODUCING A FUNNY, SPECIAL SOUND.
Were/are there luthiers who made a square body?
