i've been following this thread with interest, i too have had recent problems and doug has been kind enough to give me advice and guidance. my PC is running W7, my laptop runs vista my tablet is on android, and i've obtained an old dell that runs XP, so i followed the link and after a couple of minutes reading decided that up-grading is not essential, so i shall let sleeping dogs lie, but good luck to you russ.

I don't think there is too much to worry about for XP owners when push comes to shove I have enough room on my Ethernet modem to handle 3 pc's and my Netflix blueray my laptop is fast but the xp is just as fast or better smile

I dug out my old Gateway PC running Vista it crashed on me during boot so just for the heck of it I hooked everything up and hit F2 during boot and got the boot screen I changed it from normal boot to networking boot and started in safe mode it worked I was able to delete several programs and there folders which amounted to over 2GB's I restarted and it worked so now I have another PC running and don't have to upgrade my xp smile

No Problem Russell,

http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os

You can download it onto a 4Gb thumb drive and run it directly from that if you set your BIOS to boot from USB.  That way you can give it a try for awhile without doing the install or changing your current Windows installation.

Doug

PS: be sure to read the FAQs etc. for specifics AND back up anything in the way of photos music videos and documents beforehand just to be on the safe side.

A huge thanks for the link Doug I do have an extra 5Gb thumb drive and I know how to access the bios screen and boot from usb device let you know after I do it how it works out thanks again smile

Good news Russell!
After update one comes out (around April 8) you should be able to run Windows 8.1 on older hardware.... update one will reduce the memory requirements and other hardware down to a level that a good percentage of the older PCs out there that have been running XP will be able to handle the new operating system.  Devon has deployed the beta on several school district machines with no issues, but he has access to the pre-release development version of the update as part of his association with Microsoft as a de-bugger.

As for Vista... it's still broken.  Not so much the operating system as much as the drivers that were provided by third party vendors who didn't write their contributions according to the API.  I'd go to 7 Pro myself, although 8 is good and 8.1 better.  Sadly I've migrated most everything I use regularly to some flavor of Linux, and would likely have "withdrawals" if I had to revert back to a Windows product as my main workhorse.

There is hope however... in the interim if you want something FREE, you might check out the Chrome OS, it's a Linux derivative and if most of what you do is web based (like: e-mail, browsing the web, you-tube, news & entertainment, AND you have a stable Web connection) it's pretty much secure, simple and virus free (nothing executes on the local machine).

Take Care my Friend;
Doug

Thanks Doug for the info I do have Chrome as a browser can you give me a link to the OS download? appreciated  smile

Hi Russ, Thanks for getting back, I should have been more clear on my question...My bad Lol

When uploading to a site the program asks what format      MPEG-4HD 4:3         MPEG-4 HD 16:9

                                                                                      WMV Broadband 320 x 240 30fps

Screen Capture 1920 x 1080 fps   down to

                                                                                      Screen Capture 1024 x 768   15 fps

Plus lots of other sizes.

So many options ...not enough brain power lol

New system, just picked it up... the salesman never mentioned it ...it was a good deal,,, Yes it is XP... What's next.. Oiyyy

Thanks Russ smile

Ken

If you using XP chance are its not HD (high definition) because the video card in you PC wont display HD so WMV (windows movie maker) is the best bet its small in megabytes and uploads faster and is ok for you tube viewing  were in the same boat we both have to upgrade the operating systems this will require more RAM and my guess is VISTA will be on the chopping block next this is Windows way of forcing you to purchase a newer system kind of sucks but not to many options left I almost forgot 1024x786 is standard for full screen display see how that works for you

I went online from backup PC a desktop Dell running XP and logged on to my bank to check my account i had a message waiting for me to read this is what it said:

"After April 8th Windows will no longer support XP with updates and you must upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 or 8 to continue to use the banking services or you will browse at your own risk" I for one am not to pleased with this but if I want to continue to have a backup I will have to upgrade to vista aaargg sad

you can set the screen resolution in your computer I think you right click on your home screen and select properties it "appearances" should be on the list or screen resoluton anywhere between 800 and 1000 is normal for you tube above that is HD I hope you dont have an Windows xp because Windows is going to discontinue supporting this operating system you will have to upgrade to vista or windows 7

How come I can't get into the same clothes I used to wear? times change as do people they get older have families obligations all of the mods were selected from active members and they still contribute input on topics or comments most of the members just use the song files and don't comment I used to wonder the same thing when I posted a song I wrote that had over 1000 views on the topic but only 100 or so views on the times the video was actually viewed.and a lot of members post on Facebook that used to on Chordie ...and the times they are a changing smile

hi russ. no it was an absolute nightmare! everything was wrong. i've done it again tonight from scratch, the beat was too fast, the drums wee awful, there were a multitude of guitar errors and the harmonies and vocal were sickening. i originally wrote it in Eb, then took it down to C, so my voice wasn't at all at home. so i've put it back up to Eb. i have finished the recording and i shall be putting it up on my space later. hope i get a few listens and comments.

Russell, great song and nice performance. I agree with Phil, a loaded up version would sound like the Big Hair bands of the 80's. It has that sound a great rock band could use. And I'm sure you could put some killer licks in there. My friend and I often record two versions of some of our songs. We do an acoustic version we call Back Porch version and a loaded up version with percussion ,bass, lead and what ever ,we call it Up Town version. Just something to think about. Again very nice.

  Joe

Joe thank you for the encouraging words Phill had mentioned he would like to expand the arrangement and sent me some ideas for it I have had other things on my mind so I have not proceeded with it. I have given permission to Grah1 to use this song in an upcoming concert there band is playing for a children's benefit in Crete I am always open to other musicians ideas so far I have finished a drum track that will serve as a guide for additional tracks and can be erased later for this song I just have to get off my rear and lay the bass, guitar and vocal and send them back to Phill with my apologies for not getting to it sooner I am also working on a new song 'Dagger" it is a good hard blues not to mention building a guitar I just finished busy busy smile
