I won't say my age.  If you don't already know, then it won't be much of a contribution to this "old guy" thread anyway.  tongue

WTH!  Plenty of folks in wheelchairs also drive with appropriate changes to the vehicle.  Stupid how they just do that.  Even if she's NOT driving, she should still qualify for a handicap tag.  I don't understand why they just IGNORED that request.  Ugh... people can usually get temp. tags even for temp disabilities in NY.  I'm ranting for you.  I'm sorry.  The world is just not fair sometimes.  GRR!

Welcome to Chordie Dean!   Personally, I think learning a few at a time def. helps with the boredom issues.  The trick is sticking with songs that have the same chords so you don't overwhelm yourself as you perfect your fretting!  smile  Justinguitar.com is a great site that many of us here have used, still use, and suggest often (it's a free site with LOADS of info and you can even take the online training in an order that makes sense).  Whatever you do, keep going.  Nothings worse than getting your callouses built up then taking a break and having to do THAT all over again!  OUCH!  smile

I didn't even know people ATE crappies!  We always throw them back, along with the Carp (yes, even the 12 pound carp although I hear some people eat those too).  Actually, I can honestly say the only local fish I've ever really enjoyed was a pan fried Perch.  We have bullheads and catfish pretty huge too, but they taste like mush to me.  tongue  Need a good southern cook around here I think.

I am no where near as cool as you DE.  Ibenez classical, Epi Dread, Martin 000-15M.  Acquired in that order, still have all three.  When my son is able to live somewhere that the guitar can be safe I will likely give him the Epi as it hurts my shoulder to play for too long.  He has an electric currently.  Hubster has three as well, one an electric and he's been eyeing Gibson Acoustics for a long time now.  If I were to get another guitar, I think it would be a fuller bodied Martin... but not too big, just need more boom.  I don't have any GAS though.  The hubster needs to fuel his passion before I can possible add another to my short list.  smile

I'm glad you got the money back.  I feel bad for the seller, he's out the money and the guitar.  BUT... they SHOULD have been more careful with something so expensive.

Hmmmm... what are you going to buy now???  smile

hA HA HA!  I thought about this a LOT... and, I think you may all be right.  Jim badly wants a Gibson and has since I got my Martin.  Only, he wants one that's in the $3-4K price range (we need a furnace cheaper than that... so I don't think he'll see his dream yet again this year despite the fact that I keep telling him to put one on layaway and just pay for it over time).  Since I changed my strings, he's been grabbing my guitar a lot and commenting on how these strings belong on the guit and how nice it is to play... blah blah blah.  So, I think that I'm feeling guilty and that he's feeling jealous (I think he is, doesn't mean he is of course, it was my dream after all).  YES, he does believe it getting out bigger hammers.  I've seen him do it (NO!  You can't use THAT sledgehammer on the ice on the steps!  You'll knock the darn steps right down!!!!).  It's amazing the size of hammers and wrenches this man owns for doing ironwork.  They look like something Paul Bunyan would have used!  Maybe he needs to be cuddled and called baby a little bit more too.  He's been sick, and since I was sick first and he treated me like I had the plague instead of coddling me, I decided to dish it back.  I might give him a cuddle once he's done making weird sick person noises.  As for special mushrooms... I've seen them in person but never tried one.  They look kinda scary.  If you could smoke them though, that might be something!  I have a cigarette machine to roll my own cigarettes and I believe it would make other lovely rolled smokeable things.  tongue

I generally don't dream, or don't remember my dreams.  Every time that I do, it's a terrible nightmare.  Each time I was pregnant I'd have a dream about my husband dieing in some horrific way.  When I'd wake up shaking and crying and freaking out and try to retell the story, it would usually be somewhat funny too because of course they don't make sense, even if the emotion feels real.  In my dream the other night I found my guitar with all but one string apparently scorched by what could only be a cutting torch (Jim's an ironworker).  It also had THREE perfectly round holes in the body, the beautiful mahogany wood from the holes held in place with little hinges on the inside.  I was eyeballing Jim as he was putting away some very odd tools as I was inspecting the damage done.  Maybe he was trying to install some homemade pick up, or turn it into an electric and going to put in knobs.  I like my plain Jane acoustic as is.  Either way, I woke up freaking out that my baby had been damaged and had to check to make sure!  Thank goodness it's ok.  BUT, why am I dreaming about him doing such terrible things to her?  Maybe I'm a little annoyed with Jim... or worried that one of his "great" Christmas present ideas won't be so great.  Maybe I should get it in the case and lock it up now while I still have a chance!

Thank you for sharing that story with us Joe.  Accept the help, you need it and clearly you have good people around you willing to offer it.  No doubt it is because of your kindess to them, and the stranger.  smile

Go in and make sure the pictures are set to some type of public album Jeff.  Prolly on some private setting and why YOU can see them but we can't.  You're such a tease.  tongue

Congrats on the NGD either way Mitter!

Spike, I understood what you meant, Roger's explanation is confusing.  So yes, there must be a major difference between US and UK explanations.  LOL!  I can read music and plunk it out on a piano, but haven't learned the fretboard yet.  I don't pick out notes, so I really can't help you.  sad  Strumming chords, now that I can do.  I don't think it would matter much though, just whatever is easiest for you.  If you're picking out notes I think they'd sound the same up or down.  Maybe it's just a theory because it's easier to keep a rhythm if you're going up and down.

sad  I know you really had a sweet spot for that guitar.  Here's hoping it can be fixed, at least so that it can still stick around if not travel.

Welcome Mitter!  You've got a few months to learn.  By then you will surely be able to play a couple songs.  I still play some of my FIRST songs ever learned.  Tom Dooley is a super easy one... just A7 and D chords through the whole song (great if you already know the song of course).  Learning to play on a Martin, you are soooo lucky!!!  smile

Ok, next Q... does this seem to happen when you are running one program in particular?  Or once you open up a 3rd program or 4th?  Or can the fan just decide to start spinning like crazy for no apparent reason?  Something is upsetting the balance between ram and processor and causing heat and the fan to turn on it sounds like.  Blowing dust out like was suggested on FB is a easy possible fix if it's a manual thing, but it could be a program.  If you've installed ram and the puter isn't recognizing it, it could be the "wrong kind" of ram, or it could be that your computer will only take so much and the card you put in puts it over.  I've got a 2GB DDR3 SODIMM.  Not sure how old your puter is if it'll take DDR3 or not.  But think about this... newer ram doesn't use as much power, therefore doesn't put so much strain on everything, therefore not getting everything so hot.  You're running newer programs that use more RAM on an older machine... it's going to get hotter faster.  So I guess I digress again to the whole "blow it out" theory, make sure the chill pad's working on the hottest portion of the laptop, and try to make sure you're utilizing all available space to upgrade RAM.

I plan to bring my lil Zoom recorder to FL too.  smile

Russell is right.  There's probably a TON of programs running in the background on start up.  Many are unnecessary, but some are needed and your computer won't start at all if you disable the wrong ones.  So to start, just disable what you know you don't need (don't need word starting in the background for sure!).  If you're not sure what they are, do a google search and if in doubt, don't disable.  smile  A slowdown like that is generally a virus or a ram issue.  Blocking programs from starting helps with the ram issue as well as upgrading the ram.  What's the make and model?  I'll see if I have ram laying around that I can bring along to FL and put it in for you if you want (free.  I have no use for it!  Just refuse to throw simple things like this away).  Also, try not to have too many programs open at once.  Your machine is at the age where it really only wants to be used for basic computing.  MalwareBytes is the best.  Run it again just to be sure you're virus free.

PAUL - Did you get Skype going???

You said you paid with PayPal?  They REQUIRE a signature for delivery of anything over $250.  The buyer did not do this (regardless of if you wanted it or not, and I'm guessing you didn't tell them you didn't want it).  Open a claim with PayPal.  Item did not arrive.  It's on them.  Sorry for them, because clearly they are out the guitar and the money if your claim is approved.  Either way, someone is going to be out and it doesn't sound like YOU did anything to deserve this.  I understand the excitement of a Martin Experience being gone now.  sad  Sad.

Best advise I can give you is to go to the local UPS station and try to talk to someone there.  Unless things have changed since I worked for a different shipping company, UPS outsources their Customer Service reps...and they suck.  Even without outsourced reps, the local station doesn't usually get along very well with the CSR's at the 800 number.  Your bleeding heart will get a lot further with the person in charge locally, in person.  On the phone, they aren't "supposed" to tell you much because you weren't the one paying THEM for shipping (and their calls are monitored, they'll get in trouble).  In person locally, they don't follow such strict rules because big brother isn't necessarily bugging the office.  GOOD LUCK!  I think Zurf's right though.  Someone has it.  Or that driver really messed up!

Are you having the same issues as Paul with Skype installing, or do you have something else going on Scott?  Vista was a terrible operating system.  wink  I did find some auto fixes for Vista 32 bit systems on Microsoft's website.  They are just a little harder to find.  I'm not a computer genius, just a search guru.  LOL!  IE:  Here's one for when opening an .exe file results in a different program than you wanted opening up:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505#FixItForMeAlways

Here's the link for fixing files that won't open.  It doesn't specify if it's for 32 or 64 bit, but does say Vista.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2688326 … orMeAlways
