NEWS STORY/Kiwis are cashing in on their own YouTube clips to create full-time jobs for themselves.
More than 100 New Zealand "video bloggers" have so far joined YouTube's Partner Programme, which was first offered to producers of popular content and has been extended to everyone in the 20 countries where it's available.
It rewards owners of most-watched clips by sharing profits from advertising that runs alongside their videos, or vlogs.
The number of members earning more than $1000 each month has tripled in the past year.
The man behind one of New Zealand's most subscribed YouTube channels, Wellington comedian and musician Matt Mulholland, would not reveal how much he is earning, but expects a new development project launched last week will soon be his sole source of income.
He said signing up to the "Next Vlogger" programme would provide him free equipment and $10,000 of start-up advertising.
"The whole point of it is to build your channel up to a bigger point and that will be my plan to get the money coming in."
Mr Mulholland said he had a taste of the website's potential when one of his early videos - a cover of Beyonce's If I Were a Boy - garnered hundreds of hits.
"But the one I found super-surprising was a multi-track of the Ghostbusters theme ... that was the first one to get a couple of hundred thousand views in the first few days."
Thought you may find this interesting?

They're shiny, eye-catching and hold a great tune.
And a leading academic has described the process involved in producing his state-of-the-art guitars as "the next industrial revolution".
Olaf Diegel – a professor based at Massey University's School of Engineering and Advanced Technology – has produced a series of prototypes of 3D-printed electric guitars.
Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital file using a printer that deposits layers of plastic or metal powder, with each layer fused by a precision laser beam.
"The whole purpose is customisation and trying to avoid waste," Diegel said.
"It's the next big thing in manufacturing, because you can create to order and modify the design to suit specific individual requirements, whether it's for a new set of teeth, a door handle or a piece of jewellery.
"It's the next industrial revolution and it's going to completely change the way we do things.
"New Zealand, a country largely made up of small companies making high-value products, can benefit enormously from these technologies, as they will be able to go to market with products without the current prohibitive tooling costs that often prevent them from getting their ideas off the ground."
The guitar's manufacturing process is already used for high-end customised products and medical parts such as artificial hips, hearing aids and dental fittings.
Diegel's faculty has several desktop 3D printers, which students use for small-scale engineering prototype projects.
gidday.
We`re autumn at the moment, heading into winter down under.
Summer never came this year, in fact it was a shocker.

Thought i would post this topic to try and get some of those who don`t usually comment in the forums
joining in.
On most topics you get a few comments, but also hundreds of views.
Often it`s the same 20 people joining in.
Really looking forward to your reply.
Please if you view, give us a comment! thanks very much. B.

Gidday,
I`m thinking of getting a sound hole pick up for my acoustic guitar.
Have you got one? what do you think of it?
What is a good brand.
Dino, i see you are from California, the Eagles(usa) rugby team is in the the world sevens competition.
don`t know if you realise this, as i don`t think they get much media,
Your team is getting stronger every year and now ranked in the top 10.
One of the rounds every year, in the comp is in Las Vegas.
yeah , i think the movie you saw was the Clint Eastwood one. Invictus stared Matt Damon.
It was about the world cup final, told from the South Africian viewpoint.
New Zealand say they where poisioned before the final, this was not mentioned in the movie
as it was about Nelson Mandela & South Africian rugby.
interesting to see so many NZ players throwing up on the field.

The sevens is just a bit of fun, although it`s going to be in the next Olympics.
