Thanks for the invite Lads!

It would be nice to visit the Isles again, but I may have a bit of a time convincing the other half that traveling a third of the way around the world, to stand in a crowd and play a two chord song in a language that hasn't been uttered by any member of my family, in something like four generations, is a fine use of our limited funds.

But if I can be there other than in spirit, I'll be easily spotted.... the bearded long-haired fellow, with the blue Ovation and strange accent.  LOL

Have a wee one from me as well!

You know it is sometimes difficult to remember that some folk are still young enough to celebrate such things.....  at my age we all just sit about, wear black and play dirges.

Enjoy your day and many more!

Thanks for the info!  I've wondered what that little "report" icon was for, but never really clicked on it for fear of doing something catastrophic.  I'll tuck that bit of data away for the eventuality and hope others do the same.

Thanks also for the great job the Moderators do here, so little appreciation is expressed for the donation of time and effort.  I'm sure the "Pickles" are not sufficient in most cases.

Howdy,

Well you are talking about two different things re: at home, & out in the field....  Seems to me that a good dynamic microphone would be up to doing double duty in those environments, but like everything dealing with sound, some do better in one and not the other.

First off the only reason a microphone should require a battery is either that it is wirelessly connected to the recording/amplification unit, or it is a condenser type which requires "phantom power" to activate the element.

The terms unbalanced and 1/4 " male pretty much say the same thing, and although dynamic microphones (generally all mics for that matter) are fitted with a 3 prong XLR plug, there is no reason you cannot use an adapter to get back to that 1/4" plug.
Lots of folks do it every day and it works fine in most cases, there are exceptions which have more to do with amps so I'll not cover that here.

If we did a poll of the members to see which mics get the most stars for all-round performance and durability without necessarily "breaking the bank", I think you would find that the Shur SM58 would be the hands down winner.  If I was only going to own 1 instead of the suitcase full that I carry around, it would be one of those, mind you I own a few, both wired and wireless.

Others will chime in shortly I'm sure, but I hope that helps a bit.

Roger has the right idea!

Chances are that there is not a really thick film of finish on there if it is laquer, so it shouldn't take too much effort to get it off.  My preference is towards using a cabinet scraper instead of sandpaper as you get a flat finish without the chance of removing excessive wood.  The scraper also prevents filling the grain with fine dust that might detract from the appearance of the finished surface.

A word of caution though... it is best used by one who knows how to true and sharpen such a tool, as doing it wrong can result in gouging.  A good sharp scraper will however shave the finish off without clogging and saves the expense of all those abrasives.

Good Luck, and send photos if you get a chance.

Thanks;
Doug

9 Weeks?  Do you have any long stretches of beach you can run on?  In much younger years I ran Cross-Country... usually the events were only 5-10 Km, but we ended the season doing the Palos Verdes Marathon every year.  In preparation we would mix distance training with slow-fast intervals, hills (up for 1/4 mile and jog back down to repeat), and especially to tune up for the long run, hit the beach for a few long runs.  We'd jog over to Redondo Beach (about a mile and half) and then run up to the end of the runway of LAX in El Segundo on the soft dry sand (about 11 miles) and run back on the wet sand.  Cool down with a little swimming and body surfing, and then jog back to Torrance and the showers.

Three weeks of something like that will get you in shape for sure.... or break you down so badly you'll be out.  Assuming that stamina is not the issue, which it may not be after all that bike riding even with the 2 year hiatus.  Naturally check with your doctor to make sure you are up to this.  My coach (the sadist) died of a massive heart attack fairly young despite all those years of running..... he ran every workout with his teams, and was an avid Marathoner.

Good Luck and stay hydrated!

There are more Acoustic guitar options out there than you can shake a stick at..... & I wouldn't venture to list all of them here.  If you look down the posts in this forum alone you are going to find preferences that come up again and again.  Everybody had a favorite, and really there are no bad guitars out there by reputable "names" IF you stay with something better than cardboard for a top and body.

Your price range is going to dictate the field, although there are some really nice instruments out there in that range.  Especially with the use of power tooling in manufacturing to keep the labour costs reasonable.  I'd get on the Musician's Friend website and search everything within your budget, and then hit up the customer reviews on them to see if they have any inherent problems, both on MF and somebody like Harmony Central.  Narrow your list and then find dealers to sit down and play the brands and models within your parameters.  One of them will stand out as the guitar that "fits" you and your style and that (in the end) is what it is all about

Don't get too hung up on a brand or country of origin, and you'd be surprised what you might find.

OK Doc, I'll bite on this one for a minute....

We are operating on the premise that the  individual comes from a society that has no musical roots, and this guitar and book "fell from the sky".  It is unlikely that there is a society without some kind of music, but there was that lost tribe of people living deep within the forest on Mindinao.... so it is possible.

I'm going to have to vote for not only a new musical style, but an unusual set of tones as well.  Without anyone to tell you what is a proper tuning and no reference to start from, you would just experiment until you found something that could be "pleasing to your ear".  To the rest of the world, it might be just a bunch of gut wrenching discords, but still be "music".

Looking good there my friend.  Never fear, the neck should come back pretty much to where it was to my thinking with a little time.
You unloaded it and it has most likely relaxed.  Crank it up to pitch slowly over the next few days, and see where you are when everything is in proper tune.  Twelves pull really hard on the neck and bridge so some flexing is expected.

It is a good repair done well and should give you no further grief.

I'll go with Pix and the Summertime thing.  Everybody is out doing things with friends & family while the weather is nice and before school resumes in the Fall.

A few of us are still checking in regularly, but that's because we're too old or too broke to go.....  Ok, maybe it's just me.

You're correct Pix, if it is a condenser mic it will need phantom power, but dynamics won't.  Another thing to consider though is that usually 1/4 TS inputs are expecting a different impedance than the three pin XLR.

Gerald, you have been to MF for the other things, you might look and see if they also have a little adapter that is called an Imp.  Basically an XLR to male 1/4 TS adapter with an impedance matching transformer within to ensure that the microphone sounds correct when plugged into an instrument input (like on your Fender amp).  I use a mixer so impedance matching is handled on board the mixer circuitry, but have considered adding an Imp to my arsenal of adapters just for the case where the only hole to plug a microphone into is a guitar amp.

I should add that if you are using a pre-amp for a microphone that does require power, the transformer is redundant for the same reason that it is not required in the mixer application.  You could try what you have and if it sounds terrible (squeals, and makes other obnoxious noises) you likely will need the matching transformer.

Howdy!

Have you considered just adding pickups to the one you already own?  If I recall, K&K Sound makes a under-bridge transducer set that will do the job without having to "hack up" your instrument.  You might check out their website for more information.... could save a few $$ and get a nice A/E without too much effort.

Howdy!

Well first off, if you aren't sure what's going on with it, it would be best to seek the advice of a Luthier in your area for a look-see to find out what exactly is going on there.  It could be that the neck is bowed and a simple truss rod adjustment is all that is needed, or you might have a combination of things happening that an experienced eye can find right off.  To give you an idea, around these parts a typical setup (without a new bridge or nut install) runs around 40-50$$.  Assessments and estimates of repairs are usually free, so you might not be out anything to haul it around to a few shops and get the scoop from someone who can lay hands to it and nail the situation down before you start tweaking on things that might make it worse.

I personally like Epiphone guitars and they are usually quite good for the money.  I'm thinking that it might have been left unstrung for awhile and the neck is warped.  Easily corrected in most cases by someone who knows this stuff well.

Phosphor Bronze 12s.... Pretty much your favorite brand will do.  I like D'Addario for the price and longevity, but Silk N Steel are also quite good.  Don't have a very high opinion of the D'Addario EXP line, like Zurf says they go dead too quickly.  Nothing against coated strings, Elixers are good, Nanowebs anyway.

It all comes down to sound and price.  Change them regularly so $40.00 strings are overkill in my book.

Well Dm, you just about summed up every "commission" store on the planet.  Doesn't matter what the place is selling, furniture, cars, guitars, or clothing.  Especially that feeling that the next customer through the door with a bit more "bling" gets the sales associates scrambling to do the "greet" and lay claim to whatever share of the sale they can generate.  Generally they know the products well, but are unwilling to spend any time assisting you in "shopping" because they might miss a "real good up".  Or on the other end put the thumbscrews to you to make a quick sale so the numbers are up on their side of the tally board.

I tend to frequent the more laid back retailers (like yourself) because they know their products every bit as well or better than the "big box" folks, and take the time to help their customers make a decision that they likely won't have remorse about.... and the returns that generates.  Customer service is a fine art and when practiced well leads to happy customers, referrals, and additional revenue from collateral sales that many retailers fail to figure into the equation when plotting the bottom line.

Hi Yourself!

Cheat all you want!  It's really fine, you have found the "key" that suits your voice, which is a good thing.  Use the capo and don't worry about it because the other option would be for you to tune up 2 semitones which would over stress your instrument.

Most important is to keep doing what works for you and sounds correct to you.  Believe me that EVERYBODY has a capo and it is either parked on the headstock or in use.  Most folks that think it looks "stupid" likely don't know what a useful tool it is or why the thing was invented in the first place.

Hi Hollie,

Sorry you are frustrated with the way some of the music is formatted, as Alvee said, Chordie doesn't "make" any of the music on the site... just links users to others who have hosted them.  Particularly in TAB and also in chords, the tunes are based on the contributers "best guess" of what sounds correct to their ear.  It might be in a different key than the original recording and not sound right if you played along with the original artist's recording.... in which case you can try the transpose feature and adjust the chords to your voice or whatever.

Many songs will only have the chords annotated for the Intro, Verse, and Chorus, and then only the lyrics for the rest.  It is assumed that all the verses will have the same chords and so you simply play the chords from the first verse for each successive verse and the same goes for the chorus,  If the piece has a bridge, then usually that will also be specifically scored further down the page where appropriate.

Don't give up on it, it is likely not "laziness" just redundancy.  We are thankful that someone even "bothered" to try to figure out the tune in the first place, and you will usually find a notation on the music that allows you to contact the "Tabber" directly to submit suggestions or corrections so that all may benefit from the most accurate version that you don't have to pay $$$ to some publisher for.

Thanks for posting your question and

Hi Toots,

OK I've got problems too.... degenerative disk disease.  So, the trick for me is to attack inflammation before i get a chance to let things swell up to the point that it becomes painful and difficult to move the joints.  Yes I do have some really heavy duty drugs for when nothing else will do, but most of them have side effects that are not nice (like loss of brain function).  A couple of Naproxins (Advil) a half hour or more prior to a bout of serious activity, like walking through a grocery store, or playing guitar for a couple hours straight, goes a long way in keeping things settled down.  Tramadol works well also, but I would not recommend that unless you have a M.D. give the okey dokey.... you don't usually need a prescription for it, but one of the side effects is sudden heart failure.  Somehow waking up dead, no matter how rare is one of the "side effects" that one would really want to avoid!

Take Care of yerself, break often and stretch things a bit when you can.

Brother Zurf,

You havin' computer issues?  Go ahead vent all you want!  I doubt there is not a soul here who hasn't been frustrated at some point.

My personal gritch is the "upgrades" that don't do anything but knock you back into the neolithic period..... gazing at the blue screen of death, icons the size of dinner plates when and IF you get the thing to boot from the scratched "coaster" with the label "restore disk".  All because some fellow named "Admin" decided that we all NEEDED the latest greatest patch with all the security hole plugs!

Oh yeah, we can all identify with you in this one!

Hello Renee, and welcome to the Chordie Forum!

Well it seems you have the only one in existence!  So I hope you will be happy together for a long time.  Now you will have to get back on e-bay and find a nice glass display cabinet to preserve your rare find.... LOL.

Actually I'm rather surprised that you have not had any responses from the membership so far.  There are a lot of us out here in cyberspace, and surely someone has a Gurian.  I did do a little reading on the brand as it is a new one to me, and they are a very fine instrument worth every penny of the price you might have paid to regain yours, according to several sites I visited which had reviews from owners.  One thing I didn't do was search for a Gurian Owners Group.  There might be one out there where you could touch bases with others that are loyal to the label, and, naturally stay tuned here on Chordie!  Among the 300+ thousand registered members there are bound to be a few hanging out there in the shadows.

  Once again Welcome to Chordie!
Visit often and don't be shy about posting your comments, questions, poems, songs or whatever is on your mind here on the Chordie Forums.

OK Pete,

Here's an idea, don't get the Gibson..... yet.  Get the Epiphone EJ45.  Kinda like wanting an Acura, and buying an Accord just because you want the quality, but not the expense.  Then in awhile you can easily slide into the higher version without feeling guilty about it.

Oh Yeah!  Sign me up!!  As IF a three year old financial report with a discrepancy of that amount would go un-noticed......?

Oh and we have to notice that it is the "excess profit made last 2 years by my branch office"  BUT the financial report is THREE years old.....  the sad thing is that there is someone out there not as sharp as you Russell, who might be scammed into playing along.

Good Catch and certainly worth a laugh!  Are you sure this shouldn't be in the Joke Thread?

I do have a question though, is Ghana still a Country?  Some of those smaller Nations change names depending on which way the Political Wind is blowing.

If this fellow really managed to skim 3,5Million $$ off of the bank, he'd be up against some bullet riddled wall by now!  Heck you can bet your sweet bippy that if somebody made off with something like 10% of our Gross Domestic Product, "Grand Larceny" would seem like a misdemeanor.
