Excellent thread TF.  The music I quiet often like to listen to is by muscians who tell stories in their songs. It never ceases to amaze me some of my favourite  artist here who work hard such as a guy called Derek Lind are more or less unknown here in New Zealand. When he performs he always gets a warm reaction from audiences. The mass media radio station and TV tend to bypass our own artists for popular trending overseas artists. As a result I dont listen to much radio I find it irritating. I have found youtube to be an excellent place to find good music. I find it a fun thing to do going in search of artists that are not well known on youtube finding excellent material by random searching.  I will attach a song here with Derek singing about his dad these are the sort of story telling songs that appeal to me.

Beamer I like that reborn thing you got going on there the looking ahead not back. Your words  convey not only the visual side but also the emotion in a gifted way.

Hi Lissandragaren it is a sad thing there are people out there who don't know they are beautiful. Back in the day Ray Stevens sang about that. My second language I spoke until about age six is Fijian my mothers first language as a child..  In our language you are beautiful. is written  Ko ni sa rairai totoka.  It is pronounced  Car own knee sar rah ee rah  ee toe tow.car.

I don’t set out to write songs they just come to me. I suppose it all comes out of my environment. I wrote this song Mountain To Sea about that. I wrote the lyrics picked up my guitar pressed record on my cell phone and went for it. Once again just recorded on my cellphone and then loaded onto my laptop. The pictures are of nature at this time of year around where I live taken on my cell phone.

Badeye those two are brilliant together. I wonder what  lyrics  Stevie Ray Vaughan would sing if he was in that place and with us today, now we have Cell Phones.

Cheers Eb and TF for your commments. The poem is about PERSISTENCE. Nothing in this world can take the place of good old persistence. Talent won't. Nothing's more common than unsuccessful people  with talent. Genius won't. Unrecognized genius is practically a cliche. Education won't. Why the world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful. I wrote it because this teacher is moving to a challenge he thinks he is not up to. His wife has descided she needed a challenge and has got a job away from here  in this town that will test her skills. She told him she is going and he can join her or stay here. He has taken this job at a school that finds it hard to atttract teachers only because of her and this is my way of saying enjoy the challenge. He has a degree in Maths and another in Music plus a Teaching degree I think the experience  could make him. He could end up like one of those teachers they make films about. His reaction to my poem was "thanks your words are great in theory but not in reality". He has been  pushed out of his comfort zone.

I guess the reason why we write poetry and song sometimes is to either encourage or change people negative perceptions on life.  I wrote this for a young teacher who is heading to a new town and a school that has a bit of reputation for having  difficult students next year. He wasn’t feeling confident about the year ahead.  I have had a go at singing it with my guitar. Its attached here if you want to have a watch listen. If any one wants to have a go at it that would be real cool. Happy New Year everyone.

                                                                                       Teaching Life's Gift.
Wake up with a grateful heart and teach every day.
Yeah wake up every day with a grateful heart.
Every day is a gift.
Procrastination and perfectionism go hand in hand.
We say I can’t do it right.
I wont be able to do it at all.
Well before you can get it right you'll probably get it wrong.
In every success  story yeah in every successful story.
There is  usually chapters of struggle.
Yeah there are chapters of learning and growth.
Be grateful  yeah have a grateful heart.
See every day as a gift.
Be grateful see every day  as a gift.
Oh procrastination and perfection go hand in hand.
We say if I can’t do it right I wont do it at all.
But remember before you can get it right.
Yeah before you get it right.
You’ll probably get it wrong.
In every success story there is going to be a struggle.
Yeah treat every day as a gift.
A grateful heart sees every day as a gift.

Ctech I think your songs are worth more points then what they gave.  There have been many Demo Songs rejected by A-list Billboard artists and turned into hits by others.

Cheers TF and TIG  I am glad you enjoyed the videos. NZ parliament is more of a place where we dont have many roaring lions just pussy cats purring. We are most probably fortunate that we dont have many contentious issues like other countries have.  Things are not perfect but I guess we live in a resonable stable place. Our two main parties have very little points of differance once they get  in power.  My party called NZ First  a small party helps to  keep them in line. Many dont like them as the see it as the tail wagging the dog .

As I play by feel I hardly ever know what I am playing just the lyrics. Most chords I play on guitar on piano  I couldnt tell you what they are. I have never really set out to write poetry or songs it happens and I don't know why. If I dont write something for a while I don't get withdrawal symptoms but I know many of my friends who write need to as it is their addiction. My problem when I do put a song together is often I find out after a while that my ideas is not that original. That is most probably why I like the Blues because no one worries about the fact that you are flogging other peoples ideas and adapting it to your own story.

Cheers Bill , every time I think of Buddy Holly I always think of Don Mclean singing about Buddy  in his song  American Pie. I will attach a video explaining all the lyrics to that song and their meaning. as he sings it. Don was a paper boy when heard Buddy had died that was what this little segment was about in Don,s lyrics.. I wont put the whole of it here as it would break copywrite rules.
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
The day the music died

Great choice TF  I have in last few weeks been listening to to my  old  Emerson, Lake & Palmer album Brain Salad Surgery. My 98 year old mother loves the song Jerusalem on it. Most of  my old record collection I have passed onto my younger family members but I have hung on to that one and a few others. I will never be politically correct and not talk about Christmas. Here in NZ it  is celebrated by people I know and mix with of of all religous and none religous  persuasion.
