Sorry Zurf ,

Geo ,
That's been my understanding of drop D . A good friend of mine started playing guitar about five years ago , and insisted on learning songs that were played in that tuning . I always told him that someday he would regret not starting out with standard tuning . To this day he can't pick up a guitar tuned standard and just play something .
I frequently detune one full tone for some songs , and lately considered trying some open tunings but that's a whole different thing from drop D ....................

Hi Guys ,
How about these , only us old timers will probably remember them .
   Moreen McGovern's :
" The Morning After " from
The Posieden Adventure ,
   David Gates' :
" The Goodbye Girl " from the original movie ( not the remake )
   Bette Middler"s :
" Wind Beneath My Wings "
from Beaches
   Coven's :
" One Tin Soldier " from
Billy jack

   Oh , do you remember
these.............?

                         Jerry

Quit it Southpaw , you almost did me an injury with that chicken fight story .
Reminds me of years ago , when I was welding full time .
The boss used to just take off once in a while and if it was a hot day , the other guys and I would have water fights in and around the shop . Well this one time I decided I was gonna get one of the other guys real good so I took and filled a five gallon pail . I waited just inside one of the overhead doors for this guy to come around the corner but he did'nt . The boss did instead , and he got soaked . I thought it was all over for all of us since I was lead man . But I guess he thought it was too hot to work too because the next thing I know , he's got a hose soaking me ............

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers , it really did make me feel better. We all got through the funeral so now things just go on don't they .
I think when I get done today I will break out a guitar and a cold one and play some music for Danny .
    Rock on Dan.................

My older brother Danny passed away Sunday night .
Him and I were never as close as my younger brother and I are . I suppose because we're both musicians . Danny always wanted to learn so we would try to teach him stuff from time to time but then he would just go off on a new quest . He retired from the navy at the tender age of thirty seven after twenty years in naval inteligence , and I could never understand why after that , he never really seemed to want to do much of anything . Now I think that the eight plus years he spent on South East Asian soil had a lot to do with it ...........
Even though he was never a musician , sometimes when the three of us did things together , my younger brother and I would refer to him as the leader of the band.
The funeral is wednesday and it's gonna be tough on my younger brother . They lived about half a mile apart and were together a lot .
None of my five sisters were really close to him either, but one of the songs picked for the funeral is Elton John's " Daniel " . Getting through that is gonna be hard on all of us...............

Hi Susan , and welcome to Chordie........
One thing you always have to keep in mind with this site or any other , is that the lyrics , chords and tabs that you find here are submitted by other players and are sometimes so inaccurate that it's almost funny ........That's why sometimes you'll see fifteen versions of the same tune .
When I'm looking for one , I usually end up checking out each one , then download the
one that is closest . Then sometimes I still end up editing it before we start actually working on the song...............
Good luck , and again , welcome..........

Southpaw , Have'nt been playing out nearly as long as you have , so i'm humbled before you.............But.......
I've been listening to , and watching bands and soloists for forty some years and before long you start to notice some of the things they do that works for them .
So I say , if it works , do it....
In my vast experience of being part on an audience , very few people go out to a bar or club to listen to a musician just because he or she plays technically well . Most people could'nt care less . As long as the music sounds good and they have a good time , chances are they'll be back , and so will the performer .
   I'm with you Cytania . I'm also just an enthusiastic amateur . ( Don't suppose I
could borrow that rabbit's foot friday night ? If it works , I would'nt be to proud to use it..............
And thanks guys , I've always enjoyed a lively discussion.................

Oh , where to begin  .......
First of all Southpaw , you know what they say about opinions .
Secondly , don't know about you , but we don't play to the management , we play to the money spending patrons . Ultimately , it's feedback from them that determines whether or not you play there again .
   Nearly all of the successful
bands or duos that I know of use some visual trademark ,
whether it be matching sludge colored shirts or playing the same beat up guitar gig after gig . It helps
the audience remember them.
As I said before , having your sound down is priority one , then anything else is for fun , comfort or trademark .
So hey , wear the shiny shirts or anything else you want . As long as the audience likes you , you'll play there again............

By the way Cytania , Tony , and the rest of you guys , I guess we have to be more careful about what we discuss on this forum so's not to offend our resident
pro ....................

Cytania ,
Before I started playing out I always thought like Southpaw says , looks mean nothing . I feel a little differently about it now . That being said , nothing you do about appearance is going to matter if you don't have your sound down .
Interesting about the psychological armour , I always used to wear a baseball cap with some logo on it . Now to placate my cowboy partner , I wear a cowboy hat . It works .......
But getting back to the guitar , sometimes I'll play my Guild F-65 on stage just to give the musical illiterates
in the audience something pretty to look at ........L O L .

Hi All ,
I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none .
After I sold my welding and fabricating company in
2004 , I closed my music store also and started up a handyman business .
I do just about everything from mowing and snow removal to welding and stringed instrument repair .
What I like most is NO EMPLOYEES TO WORRY ABOUT ANYMORE..............
Oh , and I also play music any time I get the chance .
We just started playing gigs and having the time of our lives.......................

Badeye ,
Oh man , I can't believe you did'nt take me with you .
That would have been worth staying up two nights for .
I'm glad ya all had a great time .
We played an outdoor party on friday night . I could'nt believe it , the weather was perfect . There were way too many good lookin women running around , including my wife .
Can't believe what these women will get up to after they've been in the beer and tequila ...............
After us musicians turned off our equipment , we all just sat around the blazing fire and drank more beer .........
One of the best parties so far...............Later........

great place for anyone who loves music .

Hey wlbaye ,
You know , I had never heard of John Prine until my playing partner introduced me to his music . I love it .....
When we get together he does a lot of Prine stuff and I play fiddle on them . It's my kind of music .........
Have a great time at the concert.................

Hi Linus ,
My favorite for accoustics is the Fishman bridge saddle pickup . It comes with the endpin pin jack so you don't have to modify the guitar a whole lot . I have two vintage flat tops that I don't want to modify at all so if I want to play one at a jam I keep a Dean Markley Pro Mag
that just slips into the sound hole  . Excellent accoustic tone .......That one is also handy when we have someone show up at a jam with a straight accoustic and needs more volume...........

Hi ,
When I was a kid , I could'nt afford to buy picks , so I developed a really good three finger and thumb picking technique . Then I started making picks from the white plastic things that they used to fasten bread bags shut . Ever since I've been a flat picker . Sometimes wish I had maintained my fingerpicking ...............

Hi Olhippy ,
   Welcome to Chordie .
The best way to do this is to listen to the recording of the song , then play that first verse chord progression over and over . Eventually you will know instinctively where the changes should take place on the other verses .
   Good luck , you'll get it ......

Hey Crowanna ,
Interesting challenge , to say the least . ( Thinking about it , I suppose the strings could be used for all sorts of mayhem ) . Anything from garrotting to using the wound strings to saw through the bars .......
How about a piece of wood shaped like a guitar neck about the length of the first five or so frets with the frets and strings put on with marker . At least they would be able to practice fingering .
Good luck and let us know about your progress .

Just an update on our battle of the bands gig . It was cancelled because it was planned for the weekend before last when we got that three day blizzard . But we have been playing parties instead . ( Probably more fun anyway ) .
But thanks all for the good wishes . If they have it later , we'll play it ...........
